Larry Brown to SMU

I can't imagine Larry Brown will enjoy recruiting and sucking up to high school players after so much time away from the college game.

Great hire. He will get several young assistances. He is a brilliant coach and will bring media attention to SMU both local and national. He will love coaching again in MSG. He just may put SMU BB back on the college basketball map.

Don't know how successful it'll end up, but at least it shows SMU is serious about upping their game across the board.

Will he take the title of oldest BE coach? Kids today won't even know who the hell he is.

I think, for SMU, it's a good hire. They just need someone to bring them up to respectability. They can't be too concerned about 3-4 years into the future.

He'll be entertained for a little bit but the only way he'll really build the program is with some great recruiters on staff. He is too old and rich to want to fly all over the country meeting with kids. JC does it but LB has never been one to do the dirty work for long. He doesn't even do the easy, high paying jobs for more than a couple years.

I read this morning that Squid and WWW convinced SMU to interview LB and assured them that LB would be their best option. Additionally, Rod Strickland will come in as his right hand (from the sound of it. coach in waiting without the title).

Not only does WWW get to decide what recruits go where, he also gets to decide who coaches where.

That will end badly. And quickly.

I guess when you hire a guy thats seventy years old its pretty much a given it will end quickly. I still remember him coaching the Carolina Cougars in the old ABA.

Before the Cougars, he coached at Davidson...for a month. And then resigned without ever coaching a game.

talk on the other boards is that "coach in waiting" is Illinois State HC Tim Jankovich after brown.

Also on Brown's staff are recruiter Jerrance Howard and ex-Kentucky assistant Rod Strickland.

Thanks husky 99 I can almost read it...lol

I know. I read about this hiring this morning, and that was the second thought in my mind. The first thought was "WT. There are hundreds of other coaches out there and they hire Larry Brown?" This is not going to end well for SMU.

Wow, from coaching men to coaching grand-kids. What's left coaching the dead?

He's one of the greatest basketball coaches in the history of the game. Who else is SMU going to get that is better? He's bringing a stud recruiter to do that for him. I don't really see the downside.

How many people can name SMU's coach this past season? The over/under on this board is 0.5.

As I said above, if he doesn't have to kill himself recruiting, he'll be fine for putting SMU on the map. He seems to get the needed formula. He hired a great recruiter and an ex college/NBA star to go get players. Smart.

Not counting Davidson (he never coached a game), the other two college teams he coached have had an NCAA Final Four vacated (UCLA) and a team banned from the tournament a year after he left due to violations during his tenure (Kansas). Bodes well for SMU.
