Hope Kaleena doesn't change her body type!
Wow, I am really impressed in reading Wendy Davis's stats. Coming into this season, KML, who is obviously a phenomenal three point shooter, had two LESS three point field goals made while having seven MORE attempts so how fantastic was Wendy Davis!!!!! I understand this was about KML and her potential to be the all time UConn and maybe all time NCAA leader in three pointers but it surely yelled out to me that we should show some reverence to the greatest three point shooter in UConn history, at least on a percentage basis. I wish I had followed the women earlier (I came on board in 1993 or so) where I could have maybe travelled to Storrs and seen Wendy and the Huskies play prior to them becoming the monster team that they've evolved into.Heading into the 2014-15 season, the top 5 career three-pointers made in UConn history:
1. 318 -------------------------------- Diana Taurasi
(318-811), 144 games, 2001-04
2. 311 ---------------------------------- Maya Moore
--------------(311-769), 154 games, 2007-11
3. 290 --------------------------------- Ann Strother
--------------(290-770), 143 games, 2002-06
4. 279 --------------------------------- Wendy Davis
--------------(279-635), 127 games, 1989-92
5. 277 --------------Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis
--------------(277-642), 104 games, 2011-14
The NCAA-wide record is 392 at the hands of Kansas State's Laurie Koehn.
KML, then, needed 115 treys this season to reach Koehn's record. Assuming UConn plays at least 38 games (i.e., national semis at worst), she'd need to average just over 1 trey a game to break Diana's UConn record and just over three a game to match or break the NCAA record.
Well, KML hit 10 three-pointers tonight. That's above her needed per-game averages to say the least.
KML broke Wendy Davis's single-season record in 2012-13. In her first game this season, Kaleena is now above Wendy's career at #4 on the all-time career list.
Annie is only three ahead of KML, but she's going be down to #4 very, very soon.
I'd kind of like to make this a season-long thread as Kaleena pursues an amazing record. She's as great a distance shooter as we've ever had, and I'd love to see her name atop the UConn list AND the NCAA list.
She hit 118 treys as a sophomore; she can meet or exceed that tally this season. Go KML!!!
I think I'd have to say that my three favorite Huskie women of all time are Sue Bird, Svetlana and Maya! There are so many others that I've loved following as well but these three just stand out in my mind.Bird at the Buzzer. Clutch shooter. Great shooter.
I don't know!
Of course, Laurie Koehn made 132 out of 135 threes in five minutes, so that must be some sort of record.
Yeah, Laurie got good passes. But almost all the shots went in, so the PG didn't have to chase down too many loose rebounds. What's totally amazing to me is the girl rebounding her made shots and getting the ball back to her so quickly and in most cases in perfect shooting position that made her SO automatic! That's brilliant passing, in my estimation. A perfect point guard with 132 assists in five minutes. Of course, Laurie is marvelous, at least in that one dimensional way.
Maya was 150-4.I think I'd have to say that my three favorite Huskie women of all time are Sue Bird, Svetlana and Maya! There are so many others that I've loved following as well but these three just stand out in my mind.
Laurie Koehn in a one-dimensional player, but she's a 3-point machine. She's about as good as it gets. The record of 392 is hers ... for a while.
She had 14 points on 7 shots. I want to see her taking 15.OK, it was 4-6 tonight for KML to drive her career tally up to 298 three-pointers made. That's 13 away from Maya, 20 away from Diana, and 94 away from Laurie.
Still needs to be averaging just about three treys a game to get this record. Can she pass 300 tomorrow against Green Bay? I sure hope so!
MilfordHusky said:Good job! But I want to see her taking 15 shots per game.
I'm happy too. Can Lou get there too? In 3 years?I do too. She can't shoot enough as far as I'm concerned.
For tonight, I'm happy she's in the elite company of Maya and Diana, joining them as the only UConn players with more than 300 career treys.
Once UCONN gets into conference games she will have more opportunities for threes but in less time played.... I think. You know, UCONN builds a 45 point lead and starters sit down 5 minutes into the second half type games. I wouldn't mind Geno playing her a little longer in those games to help showcase her for the draft and give her a shot at some records. In today's victory over Notre Dame, KML did not set the world on fire from three-point land, but she did hit two more to get herself up to 303 three-pointer made her career. 89 to go still; she has a shot...a three-point shot, at that!
Yes- went from 28-18 to 28-21 on that trey.MilfordHusky said:I think Kaleena hit a trey when we were down 10. That helped shift the momentum.
We need to play Loolville a few times; they never cover her.Latest update after the DePaul game:
KML went 3-6 from three-point land, so she's up to 306 now. That's five behind Maya, 12 behind Diana, and 86 behind Laurie Koehn. Since the ND game, she's needed to average three a game going forward, and she got her three tonight.
I groaned on a couple that she missed because they were there for the making, but she was just off. Ah well- her next game is at Mohegan, and I'm *betting* she has a higher-than-average night against the Bruins on Sunday...
I expect Coach P to tell her team to guard #23. But that may not be good enough.Well, KML almost came up snake eyes at the casino, but she did eek out a couple of treys to increase her total to 308.
I thought UCLA did a good job covering her and making it difficult for her to be open. Damn them!
SMU, as I recall, didn't play much defense at all last season, so hopefully KML will get some opportunities on Saturday. Of course, Duke is 12/29. She lit Duke up for seven three-pointers last year. Can she repeat that performance?
