Kim English OUT as Providence’s HC

There is no player in college sports I would rather have less than Vaaks. Maybe the most selfish player I have watched in years. Jump over to the PC board to see what they think about him. No D, no facilitating, hunting shots and shoot at a replacement level percentage. Hardest of passes of all time for me, and I cannot imagine Danny wanting him on the team
Sounds like all the negative attributes of Solo Ball.

I wonder if they will go after Hurley? He loved living in Rhode Island.

To be a head coach at Providence College is one heck of an opportunity. I'm sure Hurley is seriously considering it!

🤣 🤣

Kim English - Losing record @ PC
Jeff Capel - losing record in 8 years @ Pitt
Earl Grant - latest in line of losing coaches @ BC
Cooley and Ewing - losing records @ Georgetown
Autry - Barely winning record after Syracuse screwed up its succession plan
Pitino - first potentially successful coach since Jarvis took SJU to Elite eight 27 years ago.
Seton Hall - a traditional barely 0.500 program with limited resources.

Since Calhoun came to UConn, that is the legacy of most of the Big East members at the time. Only Villanova has shown any level of consistency and success over the last 20 years. Syracuse has a NC 23 years ago and a few Final Fours. Let's take a moment to be thankful for the support of the University and Board of Trustees, John Toner, and Dave Benedict (and to a lesser extend Perkins and Hathaway for not screwing things up too badly and Warde Manuel for his focus on going to UM from his first day at UConn).

I randomly came across an interview today that Kevin Nathan did with Calhoun and Hurley before the 24-25 season. Calhoun still talks about how BC didn't even want to interview him in '86. Hurley talks about 2 Big East jobs he wanted while at URI and neither school asked to interview him.

But was this a result of playing for Kim English? I do not know the answer but I see a player who has the physical tools to be a stud.

He will be an NBA player, he needs a year or two of great coaching and to get the Kim English stank off him.

Timing is odd-Decision is right. Looked like the team stopped playing for him mid-season. Terrible body language by players
They won their last 5 out of 7 before last night's game. in last night's game the PC players did not look like they were trying all that hard except for Jaylin Sellers. I was asking myself, "what the hell is going on?" as they were getting blown out at home vs the last place Marquette team. I have a feeling the players found out, directly or indirectly, and they mailed in their effort and probably are thinking about their futures and where they are going to play. I am not sure the firing was supposed to be known to the public.

I'm not sure what Bobby's situation is at ASU but if he becomes available, I could see PC hiring him just to get under Danny's skin.
I am not sure Bobby would take a job on the East Coast let alone in the Big East. I think he and Danny have even discussed this together as they don't want to get in recruiting battles with each other. But then again you never know-Rick Pitino and Richard Pitino are in the Big East. However, Rick is an elite coach and with Repole's money he is getting much higher level transfer portals recruits that Richard is not going after, and probably cannot get, so maybe they are not in direct competition with each other.

My buddy who is a diehard PROV guy said to keep an eye on Joey Gallo (Merrimack coach—not to be confused with the MLB player or deceased mobster).. seems like a longshot to me but stranger things have happened.

I've heard his name as well. He would be a ridiculous hire for them, dude has never even been associated with a major program. The jump from Merrimack to Providence is enormous, the last thing they need is another coach from a little program who hasn't been in the tournament.

I could see quite a few of their players succeeding elsewhere. Talent is not their problem.
It really isn't a talent issue. Providence has some dudes on that team. The issue is they lacked cohesion. Kim English had a vision of what he wanted and I could see what he was trying to do, but his strategy was like submitting a rough copy of a research paper when the final draft is what was due. He needed to refine the identity he was trying to build and the strategy he was implementing.

After the season I am really curious where these players end up. I would like Jamier Jones in a UConn uniform. I think Hurley and staff can polish his basketball game with more discipline but allow him to utilize his explosive athleticism. Jamier stated his favorite player to watch to learn from is Stephon Castle.

From what I have seen it coincides with what I was reading on Friar Talk from last year, or maybe at the end of 2024. Some well connected Friar fans were saying he was trying to build a fast paced fast break team which would create more total shots and possessions in a game. English was trying to have some 1-on-1 freelance offense with some designed concepts off a few on ball screens and PnRs where shots would be taken within 15 seconds of the shot clock. Basically he was trying to do what Nate Oats does at Alabama. The problem was he needed to harness that strategy and put in guardrails and since he didn't do that, we all see the mess PC became this year. One example, of many from this year, is Vaaks taking many ill advised shots. Vaaks is a skilled and talented player, but he needed guardrails and not a blank check version of a green light to shooting.

I attended both UConn games against PC so I could see certain things that TV viewers could not and vice-versa. I was watching English's mannerisms and gesticulations while he delivered his instructions he shouted even when the ball was at the other end of the court. I especially had a really good view of this in the first game at the AMP as I was seated in the first row above the tunnel where the PC players and entered and exited which was behind PC's bench. He is constantly telling his players to speed dribble and push the ball off rebounds and even in the half court when they are passing the ball around he is imploring them to put their heads down and dribble drive immediately even if at times it meant not giving enough time for a ball screen or the other offensive players to get to the correct spots on the floor.

I know Danny has a policy of not poaching players from conference rivals but when English is gone and PC doesn’t have a coach he’s not poaching, as the PC players will be leaving anyway due to their not knowing who the replacement will be.

I don’t want a single player from that suckhole program. Bunch of losers. I’m good with Hurley continuing to use the portal the way he has been.

Maybe different guy w/Gallo's initials...

Too soon for Jared Grasso to reboot in Rhode Island?

He is the type of player that needs to learn what a good shot is and to commit on defense. He has all the tools on offense to be a fantastic player, he just takes a ton of contested/bad shots. The ball movement on PC was pretty poor overall.

Their biggest problem was/is defense. They didn't/don't have a coherent game plan there. They are too athletic to be so bad at defense. UConn may have some defensive issues but it does have a game plan and defensive philosophy.

I thought he'd be more successful by now at Georgetown. Now it looks like it isn't going to happen.
Has 2 potential difference makers coming in next year. If he gets some talent in portal hopefully they become relevant again

PC should go after Jim Larranaga. I know he's 76 but he would be there just to change the culture, no out of this world expectations. An alum it's a job he may think about.
