So its not possible to be critical of anything. Everyone should only be showered with praise?

The original poster stated his thoughts, which I agree with, and he shouldn't be criticized for it. That is the point of the forum, to express our views, as long as they are not over the top in a negative way.

Eddy, I'm with ya as far as "original ... agree with,..". He has the right to his own views, as do you. Where I leave you is at "he shouldn't be criticized for it." The point of the forum is to express views, but others have the right to express dissenting views - and ask you and Best to defend and explain your position. It's really the classic "having free speech doesn't give you the right to yell "FIRE" in a crowded auditorium" situation. You can't just be a "bomb thrower", and say something explosive and run. If you can, and everybody else can, then the forum deteriorates quickly into mindless, thoughtless, knee-jerk vitriol. Being held accountable means having to think about what you post before you post it - and, if ya go too far, and can't defend it, accept responsibility.

I'm a sarcastic guy, and go for the "quick shot" myself, quite often. Sometimes I miss, and, when I do, it's on me - not the person who calls me on it.

Disagree. Sure any poster should be able to post their views, within reason (rules of the BY), but other poster can surely be critical of their views.

So its not possible to be critical of anything. Everyone should only be showered with praise?
Well people were being critical of the post, and they weren't showering the poster with praise, soooo you can't have it both ways.

There is nothing wrong with having an opinion, but criticizing these youngsters is really just shooting fish in a barrel.

They can't defend themselves here and as has been stated earlier in this thread, they're just kids trying to make a point while being interviewed.

Forty years ago Kurt Vonnegut commented in an introduction to one of his books that he once had to spend a weekend correcting the copy of the text of an interview he had done with a major American magazine because after reading what he had said on tape he realized that he had something important in common with Joseph Conrad; that English was for both of them a second language. Unfortunately, he realized after reading the rambling and sometimes incoherent answers he had offered, that he (Vonnegut) didn't have a first.

At that point he was fifty with a Cornell education and twenty books in print. Still he had garbled an interview and embarassed himself with his performance.

I think that given where we are all standing we have to allow for an 18 year-old to deliver something less than eloquent answers when gushing about her choices in life.

Some illustrious person once said something like this: Of all the mental operations that humans have, opinions are the booby prize.

She was put in an awkward spot and handled it as best she could - why Maryland? 'Cuz I didn't think I'd get a UConn offer. Duh! But fair to note it was pretty messy in the English department. How many offerees at UConn are not reasonably well spoken???
Rocky except that is definitely NOT what she said, not even close! Maybe we should all be critiquing our collective reading comprehension skills.
This is what she actually said:
"I chose Maryland because it's a great coaching staff and a really good program that's built on tradition," Gillespie said at the team's media day Tuesday. "They have great support, a great educational program, and I feel that they have a lot of tools that's going to help me be successful later on in my life."

Pretty coherent if you ask me.

I hope one of Maryland's strengths is a good Coherent English course.

Thanks for the concern. She is doing just fine. Kiah is not aware of any comments made about her on this forum, or any other forum. She is busy living her dreams in real life, doing what less than 2% of the population is able to do. With that being said, it does make for interesting reading to have people speculate about that which they know very little. And of course people have a right to their opinion... free speech and associated rhetoric. I felt compelled to post a message only because of an uninformed expectation that the level of sophistication for a person that speaks "coherent English" should be higher.

Again, Kiah will be just fine and is enjoying her life's experiences and opportunities. She has played with and against the UCONN freshman a number of times and is happy where she is and is equally happy for them and where they are.

Thanks!

You are wise to encourage her to stay off fan forums. It is easy for posters to forget they are talking about real young men and women.

Again, I wish her the best in career at Maryland as long as the best doesn't include a national championship. ;)

They have an intense coach who likes to win. Geno 10.Brenda 1. I guess intensity is not all it's cracked up to be.

No one else in the sport has 10 NCs. In fact, no one else in the sport has nine. I wouldn't equate fewer championships than that with a lack of intensity. Brenda won hers, and then in successive years, who should arrive at Storrs but Maya Moore and Tina Charles. Brenda has recruited talent, but not those caliber players, especially the five starters from the 2013-14 UConn squad who will all be on the HoH Wall. Is she not an intense enough recruiter? That seems unfair given the worst you can say about her is that her last three seasons ended in routs against two national champions and one worthy national finalist who finished 37-1. I'll give her her due for the consecutive F4s. If you can say that she hasn't won as many championships as Geno, that's not much of a criticism. She has as many as Gary Blair, Muffet McGraw, Jody Conradt, Sylvia Hatchell, Carolyn Peck, and Marsha Sharp. Not Geno or Pat, but not atrocious company...

Why 5-star Maryland freshman Kiah Gillespie left Connecticut to join the Terps

"A lot of people ask me about why I decided to come to Maryland, and I think they have something different that a lot of colleges don't have. They have an intense coach who likes to win. Of course, UConn, that's a great program, of course," she said. "But I think that going against what people expect you to do is kind of really different."

"I think that UConn is good," she added. "They'll always be good. But sometimes, it's something different for different people."

Auriemma's Huskies reached out to Gillespie and invited her to team practices. But UConn hadn't offered Gillespie a scholarship at the time she committed to Maryland, in August 2014. She had 30 Division I offers, the local Record-Journal reported at the time of her commitment.

"I chose Maryland because it's a great coaching staff and a really good program that's built on tradition," Gillespie said at the team's media day Tuesday. "They have great support, a great educational program, and I feel that they have a lot of tools that's going to help me be successful later on in my life."

With all due respect Java we are not a team or fan base that has to continually beat a dead horse. She chose a school and a good one at that where she was wanted. That was not the option here and anyone along with everyone with a ball pebble of knowledge of the sport knows it. No spitting match here as I enjoy many of your posts and that is obviously your hobby but there are times when the repercussions should be considered.
Timing is everything and in another year the need and offer might have been there. I wish her well and am proud not only of the girls who come to UCONN and succeed but those who choose to go elsewhere and do the same.
Looks like The Turtles are going to be a challenge down the road, we need that. With a kid from CT leading the way....

Excellent!!!! Well done.

I hope Ms Gillespie has a wonderful career at MD (except of course when she plays UCONN :D). I do think she's gonna be a real good player for the Terps.

IMHO, they were over the top in a negative way. Just stating my thoughts.

I think MD is getting a good one in Gillespie. Would have been nice to have a CT recruit at UCONN, but when you have Collier, KLS and Boykins as recruits along with the current roster, there really isn't room for another W/F type.
Not signing Gillespie also leaves an available w/f spot for Megan Walker in 2017. Geno and staff may have felt that the team had enough good depth at the position to get through the season. And then an available scholly to offer Walker with playing time.

When discussing quotes from newspapers, keep in mind that often a reporter is writing down his/her transcription from a recording, sometimes paraphrasing. For example, the Boneyard took issue with something Geno said in the past, so I tracked down the same quote from several different papers as well as the official quotes on the UConn site and they were all different. In some cases, the difference was minor and in some, the difference was enough to infer a different meaning. In other words - unless a stenographer was at the interview/press conference, you are not necessarily reading a word-for-word accounting of what was said.

You gotta admit that Brenda's locker room stuff provides lighter moments before the game!

Oh, puhleez! Get a grip. USCheat institutionalizes ignorance as a way of promoting their athletic program and you think it nasty that someone brings up someone who is apparently challenged by coherent English. How many collegiate athletes have you cringed at when they say in post game pressers : "Me and ....." and the like. She isn't going to Maryland because she wants to study English literature and teach. She was put in an awkward spot and handled it as best she could - why Maryland? 'Cuz I didn't think I'd get a UConn offer. Duh! But fair to note it was pretty messy in the English department.

Oh puhleez! Your politically correct shtick is tiresome and down right arrogant. Telling someone to get a grip when obviously you struggle applying it yourself is more than ironic. We get it. You don't like the kumbaya presentation of some of the posters. It's your mission to expose what you consider superficiality. What I see is someone who screams "Look at me, I'm the only real person around here. The rest of you are phonies!"

And my apologies to the majority of posters in this forum. The last thing I want to do is to start a schism that changes the decorum of this forum especially since I rarely come here to post.

Ha..visit more often. I, of course, disagree with your psychoanalytical babble, but it's a free country and if you hang around here more often we might find common ground. Because, freuddianslip:
