In 2024 we went 1-3 against the ACC, losing by 7 or less in the 3 losses, 2 on the road. This year to date we are 2-1, with the only loss in OT on the road. I know it’s not the top of the ACC but I would say we are competitive now and will only improve with a move to P4.

Not sure we have zero leverage but it’s certainly a weak position. I would agree to take in zero dollars related to football for the first 5 or so years, maybe something performance related. Extra ticket sales should make up the little money we get from CBS now, but we have to receive revenue for our 2 basketball teams in line with the basketball allotment . We need to keep NCAA credits and some baseline.

Did you read the story? You are oversimplifying. This is about moving BC from last place in spending to something on par with VT, UVA, Duke, Wake, etc.

Stories like this make you realize how fortunate we have been scouting the right players for the right prices to get good results. Its going to take a lot of skill and luck to continue to mine the portal for "value" options. AI will be working overtime by all parties.

This also brings to the forefront the challenges ahead if UConn if its so lucky to land in the ACC, but on a super low dough ticket. Again the conversations around UConn are not strictly about whether to admit UConn based its accomplishments to date, its also about whether or not UConn has the capacity to compete while the Conf harvests our financial output for meaningful period of time. Y

They only way we could ever have leverage here is if the B12 suddenly falls in love with us again (unlikely as of today) and/or we suddenly produced a football team that is regularly ranked in the top 25.

What do you think UConn's record would be this year if UConn played BC's schedule with our roster:
Fordham, @Michigan St., @Stanford, Cal, @Pitt, Clemson, UConn, @Louisville, Notre Dame, SMU, GT, @Syracuse?

Maybe 3 or 4 wins?

This year, UConn played a G5 schedule with 3 P4's sprinkled in. Two of the P4s, BC and Syracuse, are among the worst P4 schools this year. UConn is beating the G5s on the schedule because we have better players primarily due to higher spending than most G5s. We spend more on football than all 9 G5 opponents this year.

If UConn played a P4 schedule, we would have to spend more money for players and coaches to be competitive.

If BC is spending $5-6 mil on their roster with a full media share for the last 20 years, their days are numbered in anything resembling a “P4”. No surprise.
They used to use their baseball field to park cars for tailgating.

It doesn’t happen in a season or two.
The first phase was to stabilize the program and to start being competitive. Eliminate the laughingstock image…. Check

The next step was to elevate the talent, and get some consistency in our coaching ranks. Check

Now, the phase we’re in is to start winning the games on our schedule. Mora is doing that. We’re scheduling games that we can win and games that create opportunities to get some attention.

Next phase will be to challenge for the Top G5 program. I think that starts to happen, barring setbacks over the next couple seasons.

If we can stay the course, keep Mora and staff, continue the upward trajectory, we should be Top 5 G5. That gets us in national conversation and gets fans in the seats.

After that, we all know the ultimate goal. Land a P4 spot.

I would add that somehow we need to put more money into the football program. Where that money is going to come from, I do not know.

Yes. UConn would spend more but it also has to do with philosophy. Just don't throw cash at 4 stars.

What impact transfers does BC have on their team? What's their portal strategy?

UConn goes and gets players that want PT in portal. That doesn't change if they move to P4. You just, potentially, get even better transfers because you spend more money.

Money is a tool. It doesn't guarantee anything. You have to scout and build a team like a professional program. You are year to year.

I think BCs issues are strategy and player acquisition issues. Spending their limited resources in the wrong places

I just disagree with you and I believe this kind of thinking has driven football spending at UConn for too long and it is why football has performed as it has over the years. I used to hear that if UConn was invited to the P5, then UConn would get more money and be able invest more in football. No, you invest to prove you belong and then you get invited. That is the TCU/UCF/Cincy/Houston/SMU/BYU model.

UConn was fortunate to get Jim Mora at a discount and get Joe Fagnano from Maine (thanks Nick Charlton), but if UConn had to replace them, the price will be high. Do you think UConn can get a successful football coach for what they are currently paying Mora? I don't think so. And, what about Fagnano? What would it cost to find an experienced successful QB replacement for Joe? Sure, UConn can try to go cheap, but it will be difficult to win consistently.

BC is spending less on football than everybody in the ACC and then people wonder why they are performing so poorly. And, BC has not adjusted their academic model to the transfer portal which limits portal options as well. Duke massively increased their spending on football and the results are there.

I actually think Mora and Fagnano have made our program so much more attractive which will help us get another good coach and QB.

Nice thing is a lower level FBS or FCS QB without any major offers knows he has an HC, OC and QB coach with a track record. UConn has shown it can polish a diamond in the rough. It's not a requirement to break the NIL bank on one QB. UConn still needs to spread its NIL money out to get as many good players as possible.

Understand. But I think expectations need to be reasonable. JF greatly exceeded expectations. Look through the teams in the G5 and P4 and many QBs do not live up to expectations. There are many college football teams with excellent head coach, OC and QB coach. For example, I would say Evers was a miss. We should expect next years QB not to be remotely as successful as JF.

A QB won't have to. UConn put out a press release stating they will fully fund revenue sharing starting from next year.

And he greatly exceeded expectations in his 3rd year with the program. 2025 Joe F wasn't plug and play at this level on Day 1.

If UConn will have $20.5 million then they should have at least $10 million for football. Then you are correct NIL should not be an issue competing.

He seems to be basically proposing a pro model, but with the teams earning vastly vastly different amounts. It would be like having the cowboys and XFL teams in the same league.

It's a good piece that makes some intelligent observations.

America’s college athletic system is far too important to be jeopardized by short-term attempted “fixes” that do not address its long-term, systemic problems.

The notion of having one negotiated deal for college football would be a godsend for us assuming that every member got an equal share. There is no way the powers that be would ever allow that to happen. Even if a collectively negotiated contract would make them more money they would neither accept nor tolerate "lesser schools" earning equal revenue.

And why should they? That would be like paying your good employees the same as your bad employees.
