Kenpom is out

I'd be hard pressed to see this Uconn roster anywhere outside of top 5-6 anywhere. I'd expect them to be 4ish in just about any preseason ranking.
That’s not how defense works. The first Pitino SJ team wasn’t great defensively because they didn’t have the personnel. Pitino can’t work magic. I don’t see a high and defensive team here. I just see Pitino worship.

Calling Sellers a pg is laughable. The most assist he’s ever averaged is 1.3 a game. Their only actual pg is Darling, whose coming off the bench and is another defensive liability.

They have a bunch of guys who are not used to sharing the rock. They won’t suck. But I’ve seen them listed as final four contenders. Insanely overrated imo. I think they’re much closer to Creighton than they are to UConn. Well find out soon enough
Take a look at the F4 last year and tell me how many PGs were on those 4 teams.

Pitino year one was a rushed roster. This one was hand selected and with time given they lost early in tourney.

Walter Clayton(4.2 apg)

Tahaad Pettiford(3 apg)

Uzan(4.3 apg)

Duke was a little different because generational talent Cooper Flagg initiated their offense.

They all averaged 3 to 4 times more assist per game than sellers.

Also Pitino did not intentionally not get a pg lol. He swung and missed and settled for Dylan Darling. He then proclaimed Isaiah Jackson was his pg. Now he’s saying Sellers.

You call those guys PGs? More like combo guards acting as PGs in spots. Not sure much diff than what Jackson is/can be.
Yes they’re as much pgs as Shabazz Napier and Kemba Walker were. Jackson has never played pg a day in his life. Look at his numbers. Suggesting otherwise is wishing.

.-.
Kenpom’s rankings have zero merit without in-season stats. His rankings are formula-based. They’re rubbish at this point in the preseason.

As far as SJU goes, we will imo be a lot better than last year. Scoring is a ton better but Pitino will have the players playing defense or the “bench” guys will nice right in. This SjU team is more talented than last year by a big margin and anybody who doesn’t see it doesn’t know.

Yes SJU had PG’s. Darling who is a conference POY PG as well as Sellers and Jackson vying for time there. Sellers just absolu crushed it in recent scrimmage but we will see. Ceiling on this team is absurd and depth and talent everywhere.

Sounds like you have a chance to make it to the 2nd weekend this year.

Drinking the cool aid.

If that was our pg situation they’d all riot.

However you are talented every where else. Still think the “defense” is all Pitino belief. But we’ll see. Should be a tourney team. Don’t see them as a final 4 contender

Clayton was the shooting guard under Pitino prior at Iona. Pitino used Daniss Jenkins two years ago and Clayton transitioned to PG and won an NC last year. You’re shorting Pitino and that’s silly adtwe watching what Clayton did at Florida abs Jenkins did at sju and in pros.

Your PG had 10 turnovers vs SJU last year. He’s not immune from the combo-guard blues.

“What Jenkins did at St John’s”. Did they make the tournament? Or did
I miss something .

He still was really a combo-guard. Moved to full time Pg in college and pros. Both our teams will be good. I think you’re pretty aggressive writing us off considering.

Just saying.
Saying what? That SJ had an amazing defense last year? I agree lmao. Or are you saying Demary was on an island at guard last year doing it all on offense for a bad Georgia team? We’d also agree.

Turning the ball over doesn’t make you not a pg.

Which is part of the reason y’all missed the tourney lmao.

Writing you off from the final 4? Yes. I’d happily place a wager.

Which big scorer is Demary passing to this season that UConn didn’t have last year? Net loss with McNeeley gone up front. He was a beast
This question is confusing me lol.

How is UConn getting better is my question, losing by far your best player? I know you have Karaban and Ball back but McNeeley was your best player imo and it wasn’t close. Nothing confusing about it. You say sju not making a Final 4 but it’s lack of a Pitino team playing defense that changes the formula?

Looks like your adrenals are up because you're going pro STJ on a Uconn board. What Uconn has this year is something StJ is short on, returning minutes. I wouldn't expect any returner to be stagnant to what you saw last year, so guys like Solo, Tarris, AK, along with a 5 star flame thrower would seem like pretty decent targets. KenPom 2 on offense, so analytics would agree. You also can't minimize chemistry - that freshmen beast we had last year was more of a liability than anything down the stretch, because he had to play a role he wasn't built/ready for.

Ken Pom’s analytics don’t really mean much entering a new year with new teams which was my original point. Sure UConn analytics do because you have returners. Lots of the top 4 last year were not veteran returners.

They don't mean everything but they mean something. StJ has a group of guys that played last year, so the model should be fairly on point.

How Uconn is better is pretty clear for anyone that is paying attention. In addition to returning minutes:

Playing a Center in Reed that actually outplayed Zubi in their matchups last year (take a look at box if you can't remember), that's had a year in the system and committed to as starter. Very high upside. We started a guy last year that couldn't rebound.

Flexing AK back into more of a role playing position

Ball with another year under his belt after his first year as a starter/getting real minutes

2 PGS, when we had 1/2 of one last year - we had no on ball creation at all last year

Another 5 star 3 better built for the UConn system, and can defend. McNeeley ended up being reckless as a primary creator and couldn't defend a road cone.

Deep bench, when we had nothing last year. I'm not taking away anything from StJ potential as it's an experiment and unknown at this point. Don't have much other than the roster, some Pitino bites and Rothstein's take. My guess is they'll be a work in progress for a couple months before we understand what they are.

Who’s “this board”? No one would’ve been happy with Dylan Darling as our pg.
There’s been a few people who have said the portal is good for guys to come up and get exposure who have succeeded at lower levels, IE Cam Spencer and Tristan Newton. Not sure what would be different here.

I don't know Dylan Darling from boo because I don't watch Big Sky basketball, but he washed out at Wazzu after two years to check down to Idaho St. Not sure what the situation was, I know he was injured as a sophomore, but that cannot be a good sign. He put up some good numbers last year for a 15-15 team. Smallish guard at 6'1", 180 (Mahaney-ish). Only solid OOC game last year was UCLA where he went 13p/3assists in a 14 pt loss. He does not feel like a Pitino guy as much a desperate last second attempt to get a true PG on the roster. I don't expect him to be that impactful. He does look like he has more stones than Mahaney.
