Are they really trying to lock up both Hamilton and Oubre? I figured it would be an either/or type deal since they both play the same position, but maybe Ollie thinks Hamilton could play SG due to his overall playmaking skills.
He seems to think of himself as a guard, so I'd guess Ollie recruited him with the possibility of him playing the 2. I'll take talent over anything, because especially in college, you can get creative with rotation. Are they really trying to lock up both Hamilton and Oubre? I love both their games and they both have handle with good size......if they can get both I can see them on the court at the same time as both can handle and both seem to like to rebound. Again at times "plays the same position" is overrated!!
Signing two guys who play the same position isn't generally a big deal, but I think ace was referring to the suddenly crowded nature of the wing in 2014 - we'll have Purvis (unless Ollie is serious about transitioning him to PG, which I'd be uncomfortable with), Calhoun, and Hamilton all logging 25+ minutes. I certainly wouldn't be opposed to adding another stud on the wing, however I'd assume Ollie would focus most of his energy towards kids like Black, Paschal, and Abdul.
More than that, didn't we read he wants to be a PG? Having a year to wait to be able to play gives him the perfect opportunity to develop his skills against 2 terrific PG's. I have no worries about him taking over in 2 years.Purvis is 6'3" and has a good handle. Why would you be uncomfortable with it? Clearly, one of the reasons he's coming to UConn is to learn under someone who played that position at the highest level for many years.
Samuel is a good get but we are going to need another "true" PG. There is no guarantee that Purvis can make the transition from SG to play major minutes at PG.Having a true PG is vital in college.I know the NBA and college are very different, but have people seen the starting point guards on the last several NBA championship teams? Mario Chalmers, a very old Jason Kidd, an old Derek Fisher, Rajon Rondo before he was really Rondo, etc. The last great point guards to win one were Tony Parker in 2007 and Chauncey Billups in '04 ... and neither was the best player on his team.
Having a great point guard can bump a team up a couple levels in college basketball - we witnessed that in 2011 - but it is more of a luxury than a necessity. When you factor in that Ollie seems intent on playing four ball handers simultaneously, having a pure point won't be vital.
(Plus, all we've ever heard about Samuel is that he's a natural, pass-first point guard. If he's even solid, UConn will be fine at the position going forward.)
know one knows but maybe 3 or 99For those into recruiting, has Hill taken a backseat to Oubre? Or are they using this as leverage in order to squeeze a commitment out of Hill? Just wondering because it seemed like before D-Ham Hill was "the target." Or perhaps we want all three. Personally, I think Hamilton is a 2 year player. Hill and Oubre seem to be more of the 3-4 year type.
I'll check into it some.know one knows but maybe 3 or 99
