2025 Recruiting: Kelis Fisher (merged threads)

I think this young woman will fit right in at UConn. Congratulations, Kelis!

This was basically a college game with very high level recruits. IMG has Kelis, Lara Somfai (Stanford), Deniya Prawl (Tenn), Nylah Wilson (Pitt), Manuela Fernandez (Illinois) - all in HoopGurlz top 60

Montverde has Agot Makeer (So Car), Aaliyah Crump (Texas), Holland Harris (Clemson), Lourdes Da Silva Costa (Alabama), Saniya Hall (#1 class of 2026), 6-7 soph Jayla Forbes (UConn POI), and Missy Odom (2026 #35).

And Kelis was the game high scorer :) and had 5 assists as well

I think Kelis is going to surprise a lot of UConn fans next season as she's been kind of an afterthought......if she can gain some consistency from three-point land and add that to her impressive dribble drive game, she's going to be a real contributor in the back court....

Even if she doesn't have a great 3 ball, we've got Sarah, Azzi, Allie (sophomore jump hopefully) who can all shoot one. I'm mainly impressed that despite being such a small guard, Kelis handles physicality and gets physical underneath for rebounds and drives. Also fairly athletic.

I wondered about the " fairly athletic" comment. Some days I like
to think of myself as "fairly athletic"... but that would be hardly
"fair" to Kelis! I'm looking forward to an "unfairly athletic" (to UCONN's
Opponents") on the hardwood in Storrs this coming season. Welcome
to Storrs, Kelis!

"Fairly athletic" is a description often used when a player doesn't have the most "athletic" body type........sometimes it's accurate other times not so much........I remember reading a similar description attached to Sarah Strong........I suppose if she was only more athletic, she might be really good.......

Don't get me started on the term 'athletic.' The way it gets used drives me up the wall. As if Paige was somehow not athletic, or Azzi, or Ash, or indeed Sarah. Somehow, SC was supposed to be 'more athletic' before our first game with them, and we ran them off the court.

Anyone see how Kelis did defensively against Chavez?

Chavez had 24 PTS so I’m not sure how well Kelis contained if if she was the primary defender.

There's a big difference between being a great athlete and being a great basketball player.............plenty of great athletes are pretty average basketball players and there are some very average athletes who are really good basketball players.......finding a great athlete who is also a great basketball player is a godsend.......

Fisher only matched up with Chavez here and there. Overall, there was very little if any fundamental defense played by anyone which is typical of these games. You can judge for yourself, the game is up above in post #162.

Was Paige as "athletic" as Aubrey? If your answer is "yes" then you are not using the term as generally accepted when discussing basketball players. Not that you are incorrect in general -- but foot speed and vertical leap are considered measures of athleticism not your ability to put a ball in a basket (even if that is a physical/athletic achievement).

That’s exactly what I object to. Hand eye coordination, balance, agility, anticipation, there are all parts of athleticism. But this overly narrow usage has taken over and it’s now all about muscles and twitches. I think that’s a mistake.

Having read most of the above comments I can only conclude that she is pretty much of a typical Uconn recruit.

I'm not aware of and too lazy to do any digging, but has there been any research that compares player performance in college with where they were ranked as high school seniors?
What type of analysis are you looking for? All freshman conference teams, all conference teams, All American teams-what type of metric?

I guess I was just curious about how often the “experts“ get it wrong. As in how often does a freshman outperform their high school ranking. All reasonable examples are welcome. My interest was piqued by Kelis seemingly being quite underrated.
On the other side, Amari Deberry seems to have been quite over ranked.

If stats and awards aren't your thing, watching D1 games against comparably ranked players can reveal a lot. In fact, watching them play each other in high school can also reveal a lot (if you can find more than just highlights).

For example, HoopGurlz ranked Joyce Edwards above Sarah for much their senior year, maybe even further back than that. But during that senior season they played against each other and Sarah had a great game. So did Joyce, by the way, but not quite as good as Sarah's. Anyway, that game may have contributed to pushing Sarah into the #1 spot, at least at HoopGurlz. The funny thing is that Sarah has mentioned playing against Joyce often in high school and that Joyce's teams usually won.

I have a feeling, Joyce and Sarah will have many more chances to play against each other over the next several years.
