Three notable absences

When I saw the latest invitations for the U19 camp in preparation for this summer's World Cup, I was delighted to see Kayleigh Heckel's name. However, I would have liked to have seen her with Sarah Strong, and I also noticed that two other top-quality players were also absent: Kennedy Smyth and Joyce Edwards.

Yes, Kennedy Smith and Joyce Edwards were invited to participate in the 2025 USA Basketball Women's AmeriCup Team trials.

Too bad about the americup trials. I tend to think UConn should always have players on these teams.

Injuries have definitely played a role in our program participation the last couple of seasons though.

IMO, Strong was probably invited and declined based on the HC being Moren. The same coach who played her limited minutes despite her being the best all around player on the team at last year’s U18 Americup. If so, I like the decision.

No way Azzi is under 19. Sarah's age...???

I don't know the details in each case but in general I think that turning down
USA team invitations may lead to no more invitations.

Just checked Sarah's age: Born February 3 2006...so she is 19.

I realize that it's an honor to be invited and to participate, however I am rather surprised Kayleigh would actually accept the invitation. I would have thought the wiser thing to do would be to work on getting to know all of Geno's systems inside and out, and playing with your new teammates as much as possible before November rolls around.

I'm not worried about Strong getting blackballed. USA BB operates under an umbrella and the Managing Director of that umbrella now is Sue Bird.

She's there for the summer session

UCONN will there when what for many is a once in a lifetime event. Unless something strange happens, when has it become a bad thing to play for and support your country? I know you have tempered your post with "I know it's an honor " statement. To me that says it all. It is an honor and more, If Geno had a problem with K9 going to USA camp I'm sure he would have said something, after all Geno went to USA camp for a number of years himself. Good luck Kayleigh, hope you enjoy your experience. Stay healthy, have fun.

We were talking about the americup when we mentioned Sarah strong and Azzi fudd. Not the under 19 event.

I didn't know about Edwards and Smith that they had been invited for the AmeriCup 2025, I think they have a good chance of making the team, as USA basketball would probably have invited them for the U19 World Cup. As for Sarah, she's already taken part in a recent FIBA international competition, the 3X3, and I can't remember seeing an American player taking part in two FIBA competitions in the same year, so maybe that was good for her too.

Kayleigh's USC team will be on BTN at 7:00, 8:00, and 9:00 CDT. You can get a chance to watch her play although, she got very little playing time in the last game they played UCLA.
