Karaban Milestone Watch

Gotta agree with this. Vital played super hard for us and was a bridge of sorts, but three of his four years he was on under .500 teams. That's not his fault, obviously. But he was able to put up big #s in part because we sucked as a whole.

Donyell for sure needs to be referenced. He was our first major recruit. We beat out huge schools for him, and he had an immediate impact. It can definitely be argued that he had the best individual season of any UConn player in the JC and beyond era. If he made his damn free throws, he would be a no-brainer.
Yes, people forget how good Donyell was, top 5 NBA pick, BE player of the year, 25 points a game when the conference was that good...that 360 dunk

Milestone Watch for Georgetown:

Karaban will tie Voskuhl for 2nd in Games Started at 129.

Karaban is on pace to break his 2nd place tie with Kemba Walker for OWS at 11.5.

Karaban could potentially tie Sticks Robinson and Shabazz for 10th in DWS at 7.4.

Donyell went 20 for 20 at the line against St. Johns at MSG for half of his 40 points that night. He was not a bad free throw shooter. Unfortunately, ....

Any list I do starts with the six legitimate first team All Americans (at least by some selections) we had. In chronological order Donyell, Ray, Rip, Omeka, Kemba and Shabazz. We've had many other great ones -- including Chris Smith, Ben Gordon, Sanogo and others. And then players who will be big time pros but aren't here long enough to make All American, like Drummond, Castle and Clingan. But there's a big gap between being a first team all american while you're in college and anything else.

Sorry boss...going to ignore tickets and go down the rabbit hole for a bit...

Chris Smith, 1989-1992
Ray Allen, 1994-1996
Emeka Okafor, 2002-2004
Kemba Walker, 2009-2011
Alex Karaban, 2023-2026
Ray started fall of 93. He and I were freshman the same year. He's in the HOF and i am posting in here...

Ugh

Then of course you gotta count Tristen in!

Milestone watch for Villanova on Saturday:

Assuming he starts, Karaban will pass Taliek Brown for 2nd most starts in UConn history. He is only 7 away from Voshkul.

Once again, he is on pace to break his tie with Kemba for 2nd all time in Offensive Win Shares.

And again, he could potentially tie Stanley Robinson and Shabazz for 9th at 7.3 Defensive Win Shares (he is .2 away).

It probably won't happen, but he's 8 3-pointers away from Shabazz at 3rd (260).

Nova pregame had a nice piece on AK and his desire to eventually become a coach after his playing days are over. We may have to wait awhile, but you know eventually that coaching journey will lead him home to Storrs. Looking forward to it.

Not sure, but I think Gregg Allman may have done it.
Bill James creation for Baseball. Highly criticized since it attributes a share of wins by player on the team. Then add in defensive indifferent pitching vs brownian motion, what the heck is an actual replacement player, etc. Total stats dumpster fire. The only good thing about baseball stats was in Moneyball, where you just need players who get on base. That's how you get wins.

AK will probably have 7 treys to tie Shabazz (had 1 today vs Nova) within the next 3-4 games. I think he could pass Rashad or at least finish 2nd behind Rashad. Alex needs 23 to tie the great Rashad Anderson. Alex's career average is 2 treys per game.

276 Rashad Anderson
265 Christian Vital
260 Shabazz Napier
253 Alex Karaban

11 regular season games plus 2 tournaments. Alex should pass both Christian and Shabazz.

Milestone update

Karaban is now #2 All Time in starts at UConn at 130. Only Voskhul has had more.

Karaban's late game offensive surge helped him pass Kemba in OWS. He now sits at 11.6, with only Shabazz ahead.

He is now only .1 away in DWS for a tie at 9th place.

Vital does not remotely belong in this conversation..

I mean come on…
I wouldn't put him on Matrim's list, but he is an all-time Husky, and for me, was a much more valuable player than Rudy Gay, who to me, played smaller than his talent. When Vital saw the opportunity to finally make the dance, he put his team on his back. I will always love the guy for that.

IDK, I mean he needs to be some part of the discussion about great UConn players, but when you've got 6 championships, an NIT title, etc., a guy that has none of that is pretty far down the list.

TRIVIA TIME

Alex Karaban
Minutes Played Per Game

2022-2023 = 28.9
2023-2024 = 31.4
2024-2025 = 35.9
2025-2026 = 33.8

Besides AK, name the three shot-clock era Huskies who averaged 28.9+ minutes per game in four separate seasons?

Shabazz
Jeff?
Voskuhl

Milestone Watch Update

Minutes (4250, 5th) - Karaban is 20 minutes away from Chris Smith in 4th place. He should get there next game.

3PFG (255, 4th) - Karaban is 5 away from Shabazz in 3rd place. While unlikely, he has hit 5 triples 4 times before, and has hit 6 twice.

DWS (7.3, UR) - Still 0.1 away from tying Shabazz and Sticks at 9th place.
