Kansas Post Game Thread

@HW611 This may be what you were referring to with Solo looking off Mullins......
I’d have to go back and watch. But it seemed like Mullins touched the ball a lot more with Ross on the floor than the starting group in real time.

But I have not done a rewatch.

Edit: He had one touch in the last 6 mins of the game before his FTs

I remember thinking, “HIT HIM, YOU **********!!!!” (funny Calhoun quote) but then I watched the replay and saw one dribble that looked a bit out of control, and imagined maybe he was about to push pass, but mishandled it and ultimately had to just grab hold of the ball, by which time he had missed the opportunity to feed Mullins for a bucket any easier than his own drive (all occurring in a fraction of a second). No idea if that’s what actually happened, but it’s possible.
Yep, it was a three on two break and Solo did a great move with this high dibble which got both defenders to chase out to Silas on the wing. Solo couldn't turn this dribble into a pass and took another quick dribble but by that time Tiller was in the play and closing in on him. For a split second Solo thought about trying to shovel pass but Tiller closed fast and Solo didn't think he could get the pass off and instead tried to finish.

Because at first glance, he looks overly skinny, weak, and like he's 11 years old. Then he crushes you with his first step and elevates. That makes him sneaky in my book. You just don't think he's as quick or athletic as he looks.
I get what you're saying...

He is skinny and has narrow shoulders but his athleticism immediately pops. I don't understand how anyone can watch him and not realize right away he's the quickest guy on our team and he has great dexterity, body control and hops.

I'm not saying you're doing it but I only see that term used with white players.

Ryan Boatright weighed 155 lbs. and looked like a little kid when he stepped on campus and nobody was calling him sneaky athletic.

Jordan weighed 170 lbs when he got to UNC but it was immediately apparent he had otherworldy athleticism on the court and was far more athletic than anyone else on the court. Steph Curry looked like this at Davidson but it was immediately apparent nobody could stay in front of him and nobody could defend his shooting...

I know what you’re saying, but I don’t think Mullins is in Jordan’s or Boatright’s athletic class.

Those were elite level athletes. Mullins is a good athlete from what we’ve seen so far. Steph also wasn’t a great athlete. More quick.

Boatright not only jumped out of the gym but was clearly the fastest player on the court. Mullins is not that. He’s like a Jordan Hawkins level athlete. He moves like him on the court with much better feel for the game and ball control.

Some people may even say Jordan Hawkins had sneaky athleticism in the same way.

One of the announcers called him out on it. Given that he has a ways to go with his passing skills I was happy he didn't make the pass especially at the speed he was running.

Speaking of passing we went from one of the best passing teams with the 24 team to one of the worst passing teams in 25. We had an incredible weapon in Samson with the pick and roll but no one to get the throw to him. Samson was a lot better than what we saw with Bidunga but we were unable to take advantage of it last season.
We were 4th in the entire country in Assists per Field Goal Made last season, we were certainly not one of the worst passing teams

I've seen that written in Braylon's scouting reports, same as with Castle but I just don't see it on the court. He's skinny and narrow but he certainly looks like an elite athlete to me. He's clearly a quick twitch guy, everything he does is quick from his cutting to his hands to stopping at full speed and rising into his shot in an instant. His first banked in three the other day he was standing still and then burst to get open with his ankle totally bent and legs far apart and was immediately squared up to shoot, it all happened in an instant. He was skying for rebounds vs Kansas and if you watched him in high school he has quick bounce whether on the break or from a standstill under the hoop. He was clearly the quickest and fastest player on the court the other night.

Those two frames really highlight the chase down by Tiller! I’m pretty sure Solo made both free throws, but speaking of good fouls somewhere else post-Kansas, that was definitely a good foul by him.

I think he’s quick . I don’t necessarily think high level quickness = elite athleticism either.

He seems to have really long arms on those rebounds. I wonder what his wingspan is.

I’m putting him in the Hawkins category right now as far as SG athleticism goes that we have here.

Not Dyson or Boatright or even Ben for the time being.

In general he has almost perfect physical traits for a 2G. Just has to put on weight and he’s out of here.

He doesn't have really long arms, 6'7 wingspan. He has elite quickness and hops.

You two talking back and forth and not admitting the obvious. Hint: Woody Harrelson is quicker and more athletic than Wesley Snipes, but nobody thinks so. Saw a funny post the other day about why they filmed Snipes in slow motion when he played "Willie Mays Hays" in Major League. Apparently, he was anything but fast on the basepaths.

Mullins is actually bouncier than I even expected him to be. He gets up quickly. Any "sneaky" element of it will not survive long once he's putting more games on tape.

Like Syracuse they have to count Helms Championships from the 1920s. 😂

The University of Kansas men's basketball team has won four NCAA championships: in 1952, 1988, 2008, and 2022. The Jayhawks have also won two Helms Foundation national championships for the 1922 and 1923 seasons, making their overall national championship total six.
The underhanded free throwers from those 22 and 23 teams were some of the best ever seen.

My bad. @Excalibur corrected me of my error prior to this. Recency bias on my part after watching the 24 team.

the layup by Solo got blocked and Mullins came up with the ball and got a layup out of it

Mullins is definitely bouncier and quicker than Hawkins.

I think there's some elements to "white guy" about him being called sneaky athletic, but I don't think it's that straight forward. I think he also looks like a skinny shooter until you see him bounce around - that is what is sneaky about him.

For sure it’s a mix of him having a reputation primarily as a shooter and also “white men can’t jump”.

I'd like to take a moment to appreciate how far we've come - to the point that mighty Kansas dreams of catching up up to UConn...and they're digging into their Helms trophies to pretend they're our equals!

One play by Solo makes me scratch my head. On this fast break Solo and Mullins were running to the hoop with Mullins ahead of Solo. So much so that Solo should have dished to the leading Mullins. Instead of passing ahead to Mullins, Solo drove a bit out of control to the hoop, shot the ball, missed, and thankfully Mullins got the rebound and made the layup. Why did Solo choose to drive and shoot vs passing ahead to Mullins for the easy layup?

I was stunned when I saw that play. Texted my son in law on that one. There was no excuse for not making the right play there. At the end of the game, after Mullins made the 2 foul shots, everything looked good to me again. They are going to have to accept the fact that this freshman is unique. One bb is enough for all of them. It won’t be an issue.

I was there from 1991-94, before we won any, and the Helms banners were up then. I think it is ok to hang them and display the plaques but not as "National Champions" as if they count the same.

They are understandably proud of the role they play in college basketball history. Naismith coaching and then Phog Allen, who coached two Kansas kids named Adolph Rupp and Dean Smith. So was effectively the origin point of all three of the winningest programs all time.

They practice with Mullins every day. They know how good he is.

My guess is that Solo didn't make the pass because he thought he was free and clear to the basket. He wasn't.
