Australia survives a tough, gritty battle against Japan to advance to the U18 Asia final.

Thought Somfai had a rough game after the first quarter but she hit a huge shot in the final minute.

19 points (8-13 FG, 0-3 3-PT), 10 rebs, 3 assists, 1 steal, 6 TO's

Australia won
the rebounding battle 65 !! to 28. That stat will not hold up against China with
their 7' 3" 17 year old: Ziya Zhang. China plays Korea in the second SEMI later today
Final is schedule, to my reconning, at 6AM EST in the USA. Australia will be the
underdog with their tallest player being Lara at 6'4"
This will be a very telling game, especially if Ziyu Zhang is recruited by any U.S. college. Lara is probably the best big Ziyu wil face and Australia has pretty good guard play. The entire formula for defending against a super big will be on display. Ziyu is not mobile, but she doesn’t need to be. Lara is very mobile and strong enough to box out a larger player and still leap for rebounds, which might force a few fouls.

I actually thought Somfai played a pretty decent game. Not concerned with the TOs, they weren't dumb ballhandling errors. Two miscommunications on passes, one ball knocked out of her hands, and a nice pass inside that went off the teammate's hands. With the 5 out offense and not running any specific sets for her, her shot volume is less than ideal. Her perimeter footwork on D needs some attention but she won't be chasing quick, 5-7 PGs in college very much either. And if she does pick UConn, I wouldn't mind at all if Auriemma tells her to bring #4 Shiels along with her. Very nice ballhandling and scoring Wing potential.
