money quote:

"As a result, I felt this was the right time to step aside and to let someone else lead us through the next chapter of our evolution."

Because you've done so much during your "paragraph" of leadership.

Interesting the hoops schools forced him out and reportedly Georgetown led the charge to turn down the TV deal.

Well, if the hoop schools forced him out, are the hoop schools on board with the idea that football drives the bus or are they wanting someone that sides with them more strongly than Marinnato?

gotta be a split with this or something. but anyway thank god hes gone.

I don't necessarily buy the hoops school driving him out angle... I think everyone wanted him out. Also why, if the hoops schools were so upset, did Cinnci AD become head of search committee.. unless that was the compromise. Someone who's name rarely gets brought up in expansion rumors... who they are fairly sure has the Big East as stands best interest at heart?

Too bad these people who are professional writers, can't even get their facts straight. The article states that "In that time, the league has lost three of its founding members -- Pitt, Syracuse and West Virginia".

I guess having one correct out of three isn't bad.

Didnt they found the football league.

Interesting thought on a split. Is the A10 expanding because they expect to lose some members to the Big East bball schools. The possibilities never end.....

i think u could see more of a merger of the a10 schools and they keep the BE name possibly. maybe toss in a boston school and a siena or creighton type.

I'm not taking this as a good sign.

If we were rolling towards a lucrative television deal and happier days, he would not have resigned.

I do appreciate the irony of seeing him shiv'd by the hoop schools, though - they're probably pissed that we missed out on Butler and Old Dominion.

I'm just hoping the Big East places football as THE priority now and not just A priority somewhere on the totem pole behind women's volleyball and unisex diving. The next commish needs to have football interests at heart.

I like the interim commish- ex-CEO of Miami Dolphins and a former VP of Dallas Cowboys. Finally a football guy in charge.

any truth to the rumor that the Big East offices are being moved to South Bend, IN?;)

they wanted us to grab OD, Rich, W&M and Char and have them all upgrade. marinate was like "i can't guys, the fball schools will try to fire me if i even say something like that to them"
bball schools "ok, well we just voted and for saying no to us, your fired!"

Joke of the Day: Tim Pernetti, Rutgers athletics director, is on the short list.

Are we planning a train wreck and looking for a proven conductor?

The only plus to Pernetti is his background negotiating TV contracts which is the most pressing issue facing the BE at this moment.

If the majority of the school presidents see him as incompetent, why leave him on board to negotiate the next TV contract? I see this as largely favorable. The remaining schools are recognizing that Big East is a multi-million dollar business concern, not a lemonade stand in front of Dave Gavitt's house. Who is chosen as Marianetto's replacement will go a long way in telling which view is correct.

It has to be someone from outside the conference. Anyone currently in the BE hierarchy would send the message that nothing has changed. That would be bad.

Hearing that Memphis was the last straw for the Hoops schools, who knows though.

friarj you may be a nice guy, but on behalf of every school that played fball in this league since 2000. your school.

The more I think about this, the more I think this is being orchestrated by Notre Dame.

Is it a coincidence that the basketball onlies are finally standing up to the football schools right as the Big East is about to lose it's place at the football "big boys" table and lose the BCS AQ? I think that is no coincidence. I have a feeling that now that Notre Dame has absolutely no use for the BE football conference, they are the leading force behind the basketball onlies splitting off. They have given their support and backing to the basketball only schools.

Does Notre Dame really want to be forced to play schools like UCF, SMU, Houston, Memphis, etc? Nope.

Since they no longer need the BE football conference, they can kill it off and align themselves with the old Big East.

Which will put UConn in a very tough place. Do you split off and join an all sports conference with Cincinnati, Rutgers, Temple, SMU, Houston, Memphis, USF, UCF (I am assuming that UL is B12 bound and the western teams will no longer join without the AQ status and with no home for their other sports now that the WAC is collapsing)? Or stay with your historic rivals in n0n-football sports and try to find a home for your football team? That is like asking do you want me to cut off your right hand or left hand. No great answer and a losing situation either way.

Notre Dame has used the BE football schools for as long as they needed them. Now that they no longer have any use for them, it is time to knock them off and bury them in the swamp.
