It depends if she is fully healed towards the end of the season. According to the rules, she can't "redshirt" if she is healthy before the season ends. The doctors will often bend the rules to an extent, but most won't flagrantly break them.

I've never heard of a player coming back because she "had" to.
I'm sure both Battle & Shea could've played in March. (Shea even begged Geno to let her play.)

#UConnwomen WILL NOT be offering ANY UPDATE on the condition of @Kaleena23 today

John Altavilla ‏@jaltavilla 5m
Announcement is scheduled for Wednesday, a day the #UConnwomen media is scheduled to have access with team.

John Altavilla ‏@jaltavilla 4m
I will assume there is no announcement because not enough time has passed to decide how to proceed #UConnwomen @Kaleena23
if this was men's soccer the announcement would be, "Kaleena who?"

The fact that Kaleena remained at Gampel last night was a pretty clear sign that there wasn't a break or a dislocation.

Today's MRI should have revealed any ligament damage.

Do they have X-ray equipment within Gampel itself? Otherwise, how to know whether or not there is a fracture w/o leaving Gampel

Who is Chris Hansen ?
Chris Hansen is a graduate of the University of Washington with a communications degree, he has been involved in the women's basketball community since 1998 as a high school and club coach, trainer, evaluator and reporter. He is a member of the McDonald's All-American team selection committee. He was part of Hoopgurlz but is now with PropectNation.

Of course, Chris Hansen, Dateline NBC, "To Catch A Predator". If anyone can get to the bottom of a story, it's Chris Hansen. "What's that you say? This Chris Hansen is a basketball insider? My bad....."

They must. I don't believe they would risk not doing an x-ray immediately. Bob Joyce mentioned last night that Dr Michael Joyce, the men's and women's teams orthopedic surgeon, was at Gampel last night and examined Kaleena. He'd want an X-ray right away to determine whether there were a fracture or dislocation.

This reporting delay can't be good. Swelling doesn't render imaging studies ineffective. I certainly don't think there's any cat-and-mouse game being played here. Brenda Frese has too much to worry about with or without Kaleena, and everyone knows it. We just have to hope it isn't season-ending. If we have her back, and in form, by tourney time, we'll be fine. I want to win every game, but we all have too much invested in the idea of an undefeated season. Let's just get #9, hopefully, with her in the lineup.

It does render some types of scans unusable. I did not say xrays. I have been turned away and told to comeback when the swelling was down. I believe swelling affected soft tissue imaging.

Several of the Horde reported she was not taken to the hospital. She walked out of Gampel in a sling. At least that is good news. We must have faith.....

I was at the game with Cferraro. When she fell everybody thought it was an ACL. There was talk about a broken shoulder and a broken elbow. I thought they took her to the hospital. They didn't. So watching the replay she landed on her hand then her arm went down and then her elbow hit the floor and she started screaming. Was it her funny bone? She seemed to break her fall with her hand and arm and she didn't go to the hospital so maybe shes not that bad. If it was broken she would've been to the hospital and it would be in a cast, its not. The gloom and doom crowd is thinking the worse. I'm not. If she misses this weekend we will deal with it. I think Rosemary most likely put ice on it so the swelling is down but may not be down enough for the weekend. So we deal with it. After this weekend we have a couple of weeks for her to recoup. So we start Morgan Kiah or Saniya that's not so bad. We will be fine. This is a big weekend after that we have an easier group of teams to play so there is plenty of time for KML to get better before Ohio St on Dec 1 and Duke on Dec 17. Lets just wait and see.

That's why I said in the other post that there is a grey area. If the player is capable of playing but not at 100%, the doctor can get away with bending the rule. If the player is clearly 100% there might be problems when the doctor has to certify the injury as "season-ending" and provide medical documentation.

There have been times when football players were not given a hardship waiver because they were healthy at year-end. Don't know about basketball.

Chris Hansen is an AAU evaluator and has lots of inside contacts in WBB. If he's heard anything, I suspect its from one of the players.

If it is a legit account (and it looks like it), Shea favorited Chris' Tweet. Very interesting.

Heather Buck was redhirted for a full season after missing the first 10 games with mono. Pretty sure medically she would have been cleared to play by the end of the season. Why would this be any different?

I thought the rule was if the injury happened before they played a certain percentage of the season, they could take a redshirt year.

To all the wannabe doctors out there, If it's not a bone break what are the other possibilities?

Ligament tear, tendon damage, deep bone bruise, hyper-extension, severe sprain...What did I miss?

We obviously know from experience what ligament damage in the knee means. What about ligament damage in the elbow or hand? What would be a time table for a return?

it was just unbearable to see KML scream out like that. regardless of which school you support, nobody wants to see a young star leave a game like that. seems like she has a lot of support throughout WCBB. prayers up for her. hope she comes back stronger than ever.
