"When you are the most skilled player of your team, there’s a way, through the way you carry yourself, the air of confidence that you have, that helps your team jump up to another level."

"Lawson is not allowed to comment directly on what she saw last week in Colorado."

Is it me or are some of these 'rules' really dumb?

If KML continues to broaden her game as Kara suggests, KML, Steph and Stewie , in the context of this talent loaded team, represent an enormous head ache to any team in America.

Kara is a great student of the game and her analysis is spot on.
More than a headache, rather an undecipherable dilemma for next season's opponents (if anyone chooses to play us).

Imagine having to give the reason why each player who did not make the team was cut??

“Now that she has the blank canvas, her game off the dribble, her ability to pass and open up teammates, because of the attention she will get, will be the next step to being a great player.”

I think KML did a lot of that already. Her passing was better, her game off the dribble was better, her rebounding was better, her defense was better. Even her shooting was better.

All-American as a soph? She is already a great player and getting greater.

Really, really, really like Kara Lawson as a commentator on the GAME. She is both articulate and knowledgeable and provides a better insight into a single game, or the game of basketball than anyone else out there. Hard to admit, but TN has produced the best broadcaster in WCBB. I like Lobo, but Kara is in a different league.

Don't fret. I think, without doing any real search for obvious reasons, that she and her family now call Conn, if not UCONN, their home. :)

Yeah, she's usually pretty good at nailing the essence of a game's dynamics, but let's face it, when you have a blathering mannequin as your sidekick on the ESPN broadcasts, your genius aura will be increased by many many levels of magnitude.

I prefer "blithering". But mannequin is spot on...lol.

She may call Connecticut home but she will always, always bleed orange. I would be very surprised if it were otherwise.
[edited to add] I would not wish that any UConn grad who settles elsewhere would forget from whence he/she came....at least from which college

A great post by Kara........But I would add that I think Stewie is the best All-Around player on the team. She has the ability to shoot , dribble , rebound, pass , block shots , and provide assists , like no other player on the team. Her ability to provide what's needed each night is key. Sometimes it may be every skill she has in her arsenal. At other times it may just be one or two thats needed for the win.

KML on the other hand , IMHO , is the teams best overall knock-down shooter. She's not the teams best shot blocker , rebounder ( though willing) , defender , or assist maker. But she is a shot maker. And if KML continues to add to her skill- set and continues to develop her game , BYers won't have to try to choose which is more dangerous......... The opposition will just have to choose its poison.

Great read and great post by Kara. However I agree with DD. I've watch KML throughout the season and her defense and rebounding was much better than people thought. She had her share of turnovers but so did everybody. I just think that her defense/rebounding was overshadowed by the fact that she's a great shooter and terrific offensive player. To me, she was the most consistant player on the team.

I just love Kara and feel she is extremely objective even when Tennessee is playing and in all probability the number one commentator in women's basketball.

Exactly! I meant to add this to my post is well, that her objectivity, knowledge and professionalism is most notable and appreciated.

One factor that favors KML in her value is her constant growth in consistent effeort and her lineage in that from Maya to Kelly to KML. Kaleena gave wonderfully consistent effort at both ends of the court last year. It was the area of her biggest growth before and during the season. She picked/had a great role model for a practice partner.

I agree, this team will have more than a handful of great players next year, but it will KML that sets the tone, just as Kelly set the tone this year.

--all of which is why I tab KML as our "best" player right now. Doesn't mean anything in particular, since Stewie can explode at any time and take over a game like no other. Right now I think of Stewie as our "most gifted" player. If she gains KML's consistency or anything close to it, she will be 1st team AA and could eclipse KML as the team's #1 player in my mind (as she already is in others').

Remember the question Catchings fielded during the Olympics? She was asked about the "problem" of playing with UConn teammates and responded, "You grow up".
Kara bleeds orange, but she's a great big grown-up.

Kaleena's stats
#1 on team in scoring (17.6), #56 nationally
#1 nationally in three point FG%
#1 on team in free throw percentage (89.5%)
#2 on team in steals (57) after Kelly (96)
#2 on team in offensive rebounds (85) after Stef (87)
#3 on team in overall rebounds (240 rebounds, or 6.3 per game) after Stef (269, 7.1 rpg) and Breanna (229, 6.4 rpg)
I'm too lazy to figure everyone's TO's per 40 minutes but KML has to be one of the best

Breanna is a fabulous, spectacular player and she will be National POY before all is said and done but this year KML was, with Kelly, one of the two best all around players on the team.

You can set your watch to Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis. She is a UConn kid through and through, and thank goodness she had the self-awareness and confidence at 15 years of age to recognize that and make the early commitment to the school and coach she was built to play for.

Breanna Stewart will be the motor of the Huskies the next couple of years, but Kaleena will be the engine.

From a recent post about KML's improvement. Can't help but admire someone soooo good working to get even better...

"This year, KML started all 38 games she played in. She managed to improve in almost every statistical category. KML led team in scoring, again, but raised her average to 17.6 points per game. Her 670 total points was an improvement by 17.8% over last season. Her rebounding total of 240 and assist total of 89 were better by 17% and 39% respectively. From there, the improvement gets downright scary. Compared to last year, she actually took fewer 3 pointers (240 vs. 242) and fewer total field goal attempts (458 vs. 470) this year. How did she score more points? Accuracy. KML improved her field goal accuracy from 43.2% to 52.8%, her 3 pt shooting from 38.4% to 49.2% (best in the nation) and her free throw percentage from 83.3% to 89.5%!! Throw in a new low post game, better defense ( steals up from 47 to 57) and a team leading 30.2 minutes per game and KML just might be the Most Improved Player on the UConn squad. And she is only a sophomore....."
