Jewell Loyd Leaving for WNBA

I apologize for not knowing these rules, but I thought in the WNBA they couldn't "poach" undergraduates???

This is too bad. Other BY threads suggested that Loyd had committed to staying only a day or so ago. Maybe, she figures that ND won't be able to beat UConn next year either, so what's the point of staying.

They can't usually. If she turns 22 this year, she's fair game.

I'm shocked. I really am. Not sure why I'm so shocked based on the money she has the potential of making, but shocked nonetheless.

I too thought she looked resigned to the loss last night, and didn't seem to be as upset as the other players. Maybe she had already made up her mind.

Im disappointed..... I liked watching her play..... and looked forward to seeing her senior campaign both on tv and in person in Durham and at the ACC Tournament :(

Muffett said that Jewell told her she was NOT going. Wow!

Jewell could be the #1 pick this year. Next year, she'd be behind Stewie.

Best wishes to Jewell. She's a helluva player.

I bet that's the real reason: the draft and being 1st overall this year instead of being behind Stewie next year. Losing to UCONN per se is irrelevant.

This is a major blow to the Irish. Can't see her being picked anywhere other than #1. Happy for Sue Bird and the Storm. That's a fun backcourt worth watching.

Notre Dame was going to be great next season. This is like two punches in the face these past two days.

Yes, that could be it. Tired of coming in second to Stewart. The other side of the same coin.

Article says she could withdraw and return to school, but had to declare today. Maybe she's just keeping options open.

ND has 3 guards coming in next yr. Arike Ogunbowale is really good. Patberg
and Mabrey at highly rated also. I really like Ogunbowale, she is strong and
will be a very good college player. She played with our 3 recruits on the USA
3 on 3 team.

WOW!!!! Count me as the shocked!

I guess she is headed to Seattle!!!!

Revised early top-5

1) UConn
2) South Carolina
3) Baylor
4) Tennessee
5) Notre Dame

I'm completely floored and worried what sort of a snowball effect might come from this. I dislike ND and would love for the Irish to fall off some with her departure, but what makes the women's college game special is that all the great kids a school gets stay for four years.

I also wonder what the money is really like. WNBA money certainly isn't anywhere near so much that you'd forgo a college degree for it. Overseas may be another story.

I guess I hope this only sucks for Notre Dame and doesn't start a trend for WCBB.

Why would Rebecca make her tweet if there wasn't a strong rumor. It always seemed like a strange tweet. "The Lady doth protest too much."

Rumor? ND's own site has a statement from Muffet wishing Jewell well and that they appreciate all she has done for the program and understands it wasn't an easy decision. This seems like a 100% done deal if the school has put out a press release.

interesting decision. A degree from Notre Dame is worth ALOT.

Also anyone up for a wager if Lachina is back at espn next season?

That's really irrelevant. The real prize is the 7-figures she will make playing overseas next season.
I'm thinking mid 6-figures, but the change in info is stunning. The statements about her staying seemed solid.

It is, but it's a 180-degree change in direction in 72 hours or so.

Interesting decision. Smaller guards don't typically draw huge dollars overseas. Her style of play will likely earn her some shoe money from Nike or another company. While it may not be millions of dollars it does add up and potentially adds another year of earning money onto her career. And there is always the danger of an ACL injury like she saw Achonwa suffer.

I would have enjoyed seeing what she could do with Notre Dame next season outside of 1 or 2 games against UConn.
