I'm not bummed about this one even though Govan is so highly ranked. He has offensive skill and is huge but he's not an athlete and is slower than molasses, he just doesn't seem like a player that fits our style of play. I think Steve Enoch is going to be a big to watch for us, he isn't ranked anywhere at the moment but is just starting to blow up and my guess is that will continue this summer, he's far from a finished product but is an athlete with big upside, we usually do well with these type of bigs.

I'll put on the hat of UConn recruiting coordinator and spin that the other way. Other than Drummond and CV, none of those guys were projected as being close to NBA players coming out of high school. Thabeet is a bust relative to draft position, but not at all a bust relative to what he was coming out of high school. Or what he was a freshman, when he was totally uncoordinated and fell down all the time. The fact that UConn took that player and developed him into a Final Four centerpiece and a No. 2 pick says more about UConn than what Thabeet did after being drafted. (Of course, that was a previous coaching staff anyway, so the point is a bit moot).

Brimah's development may be key looking forward. If he develops more skill, he could be a guy UConn can point to as a success story - in nobody's top 100 and yet a dominant college player/ NBA prospect.

Great post and I agree with you. I just think if I was a rival school recruiting against us I would say that historically we do not feature our big men. Our big men, even the pro's, have been rebounders and shot blockers. I don't think we've had a pro big men who averaged more than 13-14 a game. CV and Cliffy were stretch 4's so they don't really count. Compare that with GTown which can claim three hall of famers and we'd have a tough battle. Same as us comparing wings to another school.

I know all of the "we didn't want him anyway" posts are en route, but I thought we had this guy all but wrapped up.

We r recruiting 3 top 15 big men for 2015. With no big man commit for our 2015 class there is am extremely good chance we get 1 of the 3. We r in great shape

UConn winning the National Championship has really not done anything for our recruiting of 2015 elite basketball players. Why is this happening??? This is really terrible news to loose out on Govan. Two negative things against us--We are in a terrible conference and Ollie's possible interest in going to the NBA. Nobody really knows about CR, so we really are suck in the AAC for a while. Our basketball program should be on the rise with more top notch recruits wanting to come to UConn. Ollie needs to make a statement SOON that he is committed to growing the UConn basketball program. With Ollie's recent success as a head coach, you would think that elite recruits would want to come here. No recruit wants to wonder every year if Ollie will stay or jump ship to the NBA. They want stability. That's what made Jim Calhoun such a GREAT coach. He was dedicated to the university. We need to have an elite 2015 recruit(s) commit ASAP in order to calm down all these question marks.
Patience, patience. Is the 2015 recruiting all done already and I missed it? This is 1 recruit. You lose way more recruits than you get. Let's play this out until at least the fall signing period before we make statements like that.

Govan's game is a half-court, back to the basket post up game. That's not a bad thing, but it may not actually fit our style all that well. If you look at the makeup of our team for next year and beyond, we have athletic and quick guards, and athletic wings. We have been using a stretch 4 scheme and our current bigs get up and down the court. We may be better suited going after a more athletic big like a Diallo, etc., although Govan would have helped fill a low post scoring need. This might not have been the best fit from the get go. Definitely not a sky is falling loss here.

I'd take Enoch. But not before making the Stone/Newman package a priority. I think that this really opens the door for that. After that, a 4, standard or stretch to complete the class.

Govan could be very good but I agree he may not be the best fit at UConn.

Dodged a bullet here.

Completely agree. Zero athleticism. Didn't even think he was the best player on NY Lightning. He'll fit much better standing still in the middle of that Princeton offense.

Enoch is a solid player that Ollie and the staff have given him a glance because he's an in state guy. But the fact is he is a mid-major talent, an after thought for us. He'll end up at Fairfield or Siena or somewhere like that have a solid career and earn a degree.

If Enoch puts on a UCONN uniform it will be because we missed on everyone else first.

It's mid-May. These kids have half a year to decide.

Yeah and your so committed to the UConn program that you signed up just last month here and post once every 25 days to whine and feel entitled.

I didn't think it would be possible to make a UConn board insufferable to read considering what we just experienced a month ago, but boy, there's about 10% here who seem to be dead set on proving me wrong.

"WHY IS THIS HAPPENING???" "TERRIBLE NEWS" OLLIE NEEDS TO DO THIS NOW!" "OR ELSE!"

What a baby.

I also love this notion that UConn's recruiting needs to get better or needs an upgrade or uptick. Yeah. Our recruiting really needs to change. Perhaps that way we can win the National Title every year as opposed to every 5 years like we currently are.

based on what?

That we had been recruiting him for so long, proximity, need for a big men, the "full court press" we just put on him, etc. In my mind, I figured we were the most attractive option for him (biased, of course).

Well considering Enoch has gotten a scholarship offer from Memphis, has visited UConn and is being recruited by VCU and Virginia I highly doubt he ends up at Siena. If these are the looks he's getting in such a short amount of time I'm guessing many more bigtime schools come calling once they see him during the summer period.

I miss the old days. You know, when we would miss on big man after big man and get "stuck" with Emeka Okafor.

If Ollie liked him enough to offer him a scholarship, then I will defer to Ollie's judgment. Georgetown is a good program and a great school. No shame in losing out to them

but they are in a shltty conference.

Relax. We already got two elites recruits committed. I don't know how long you have been following recruiting but you hear about 6 to 7 No's for every Yes. That is not just for us but for every school will hear more N0's than Yes'.

I thought Enoch had a Memphis offer?

I've heard about the Memphis offer; if it's there he should take it. I've seen the kid play up close plenty of times and I just don't see it at all. I really wish him the best but I'm scared he gets lost on the bench at a larger school. Tyler Olander-esque

I say we sign Jalen Adams and rivals teammate Josh Sharma(who fits our system a lot better, taller, longer, more athletic) and call it a day...him and Jalen play really well together too.
