Jayden Ross

Ross-Solo-Bray-AK-Reibe might be our best 5
Hard to say, but it's a nice luxury to have. Have thought for awhile if we want our best defensive unit out there, it's Silas/Mullins/Ross/AK/Tarris.

Tarris played pretty poor last night outside the first few minutes. Dan Hurley says he's still not 100%, so have to cut him some slack. Between fumbling balls, taking bad shots and just looking off, he wasn't good for a lot of it. It showed in the NET too, where Reibe was +16 to his +5. When Tarris isn't 100% it seems to really flow into all facets of his game. Hopefully he gets there soon. Reibe plays so much more headsy and fundamental out there.

Ross is a lot of fun to watch when he's flying around. Good to see him flashing the athleticism.

A lot of people saw this coming. Hurley kept telling us.

It's more surprising that some posters thought that he was just a poor rotation piece that should get 5 minutes a game.
The 3* freshman was supposed to compete with him for minutes.

You can tell that if UConn has a lead in the last 5 minutes, Hurley has a specific group of guy she wants out there to really makes things tough for the other teams offense. Ross is part of this equation. I think Mullins is getting some of that trust as well as Karaban and Reed. Demary is a physical guard and Smith is more of a bee in your bonnet type so he has some flexibility there. It the other team is big, like some have said, Ross can go on their PG and use his size to make it hard for the opposing PG to initiate offense.
Glad to see Ross have a great game. Again, he and Ball are supposed to be great kids from what I here. Just hope Stew just had a stinger and is alright. I wonder if there is any soreness if Hurley might limit his minutes with Ross's performance just to give him almost 2 weeks to fully heal.

Nerd Alert! Here's our team's offensive and defensive metrics with Ross in the lineup vs. not in the lineup. (Data from HoopExplorer...simple note for non-nerds reading these data---the darker green, the better that stat relative to D1 averages. The darker red, the worse that stat is relative to D1 average. The ranks for some are listed below the data points. ):

First is for all games played:

Ross - 12-17-25 - All Teams.jpg

We are 12 Adj Pts/100 possession better on Offense, 13 Adj Pts/100 possessions better on Defense.

Next is for the Top 60 competition we've played (RuffRuff's tomato can teams removed):
Ross - 12-17-25 - Top60.jpg

There's really no drop off on team metrics when playing better competition when looking at Ross On/Off stats.

I think it’s more surprising some people thought he’d be a starter and star. He’s a really solid role player and energy guy, and up until this season hadn’t shown he could even do that consistently. But now he is, and it’s what we need.

Ross playing 27 minutes compared to Stewart’s 7, seems like Ross passed Stewart on the depth chart.
Sometimes I swear you don't pay any attention to UConn. Who are you a fan of?

Jaylin Stewart entered the game "a little banged-up," according to Hurley, and aggravated his shoulder when he fell to the floor in transition midway through the first half. He left the game and sported a shoulder brace on the bench for most of the rest of the half, re-entered the game briefly but didn't play at all in the second half.

Hurley said Stewart, a junior forward, will likely undergo an MRI on Wednesday.

How, who’s out?

1 game let’s see more. It was a special bench game now let’s string some minutes together.
Doesn’t mean starting but we need the athletic defense and rebounding

Agree. Were you able to tell anything about Stew's injury? Did it look serious?
Stewart got knocked down twice in the first half. The first was an open floor face plant from being tripped or tangled up, the second was on D under the basket and he got absolutely leveled by a bigger Butler player and called for the foul. Stewart was kind of frontally sideways and took the hit on his right side shoulder/arm area. They put him in a sling for a few minutes but then he played again with like 5 minutes left first half, but he was shaking his arm like he had no feeling or something. Did not play 2nd half.

Also when he first played in the first half, coming off the bench he had a brace on his right leg from upper calf over the knee to lower thigh, like a 20 inch strappable brace.

Hopefully he is fine.

Ross brings a smile to my face. I'm so happy for him, and so proud of how his confidence has soared and his play has become so fluid and athletic. There is so much to love about this team, but seeing Jaylen turn the corner the way he has is so uplifting.

He is still a junior.

I know rule number one on the BY is players can never improve, but Ross has already broken that rule. His three point shooting has gone from .091 as a frosh, to to .222 as a soph, to .391 so far this year. He may yet be a stater and star.

I don’t think anyone conflates “not an all-American” with “he can’t improve.” He’s improved each season incrementally. This season he’s simply improved his role.

I’d never say never, he’s a great athlete and hard worker, but generally guys with his skillset don’t suddenly become All-American 20 point scorers and go-to guys. He’s built to be an excellent role player. And that’s awesome.

That’s always been my personal opinion - not that he couldn’t improve or wouldn’t be valuable. Just that he wouldn’t be a go-to star option. Thus far nothing indicates he’s built that way.

We haven’t had a 20 PPG scorer since Kemba so I don’t think that’s the definition these days.

But a two way 13-15 PPG scorer can be in the cards, possibly. He's shown all the flashes of the different ways he can score.

Just has to put it all together consistently and maybe it would come with an upgraded role if he has that next year.

It’ll be interesting to see how the staff views him and Stewart for next season.

The game has definitely slowed down for Ross and if his offense is clicking like it was the other night it’s going to be hard to give him under 25 mins/game.

Theoretically Uconn could roll into next season with a starting lineup of:

Demary
Solo
Ross
Stewart
Reibe

That would be a 4 senior lineup and a lot of continuity. Furphy, Landrew, County, Portal 5, Portal PG off the bench.

Hard to know if this is a slam dunk or not.

Have you ever read this board especially in the off season?
Disagreeing on how much you expect a player to improve does not mean you think a player can’t improve. May shock you but improvement is not a binary outcome. If I say I don’t think Millender will become an all-American, that doesn’t mean I think he can’t improve.

This would be the idea. Landrew can serve as the backup 3-4 but wouldn’t mind another backup portal 4.
