January General CBB Discussion Thread (Non-BE)

Are you not at all interested in learning about a team to beat? Or would you prefer to live in a Uconn vacuum?

Such a strange comment. I don’t think the board would be unaware of Michigan without your incessant posting about them. Speaking personally, it’s the relentless derailing of threads with YouTube clips of random dudes named Greg talking about Michigan in threads that could be about virtually anything else that probably has people responding the way they are.

I can’t imagine someone posting about the ‘24 team as much as you do on some other programs board wouldn’t have drawn the same response.

I don't expect ancient history to be a dictator of outcomes during the portal/NIL era. These programs can build superteams in this era. May took the best mid major player, a McD AA PG from UNC, a 7'3" rim protector from UCLA. You couldn't do that for most of 1976 onward. I don't think UM or UConn holds to those records, but I don't think it's impossible. Right now UM looks like they can just overpower a lot of teams. Uconn looks like they can outexecute and out depth teams.

Michigan is really good, we can all see that but you're going a little crazy with this stuff.

You seem to think they're the greatest college basketball team ever and now you seem to think UConn could beat them in the championship game where they are playing for it all with a combined 75-1 record.

Just looking at recent teams '24 UConn and '18 Nova would have no trouble with Michigan or this version of UConn.

You're not alone, this from Dauster the other night...40-0 for Michigan. Their frontline is 7'3, 6'11, 6'10.

Maybe they'll win every game by 40, maybe they have to play the Spurs and Thunder for any competition.

They also didn't have the amount of travel back then that today's teams have. Although I just looked at Michigan's schedule and it's actually not too bad. They go out west once to play Oregon and Washington back to back. UCLA is at home and they already played USC at home. It's not like UCLA's schedule last year where they crisscrossed the country like 3 times and the leprechaun had a fit about it.
I too took a peak at it. Obviously the game at Purdue will be the biggest challenge, but boy do they match up well there. Big athletic teams are Purdue's weakness. @MSU could present some issues, but they're so much bigger. IDK - you're right about the travel, especially to the West Coast - just not sure who out there can do it. They can play their C+ game and beat most of those teams. They're bound to lose one, but should be favored in every game other than maybe Purdue.

I really like our chances in the BE this year now that it's pretty clear StJ is middle of the pack.

I post Greg talking about more than UM for gods sake. And post about plenty more - ask Hooper. Why would I post about the 24 team on another board? If I was Purdue that year closing in on that Uconn team, I would break them down. In lieu of no one in the BE to talk about, looking ahead.

Listen, I clearly don't expect it. We all know that. I do not think this UM team is the best team ever - didn't say that. I simply think they're a really tough matchup based on their size & athletecism. They have a 6'9" PF 2way dude at the 3. Dauster didn't get their frontline size right.

Not what he said
I offered my rationale - who should we be breaking down? DePaul? Familiarizing with the best team in the country when we have a NC contender is interesting in my book. Breaking down a bunch of meh teams in the BE, not so much. You don't think the staff is taking a look at the national landscape of top teams and thinking about how they need to tailor this team for combat?

I haven't seen enough ISU to break down yet. I think we'll match up well with AZ with Mullins/Tarris in there. I think we match up well with Purdue. We've seen BYU. Houston needs to develop.

Arizona, Duke, Iowa State, Purdue, Mich St, etc. There’s so many other teams to talk about .

Need to watch more ISU. I think we match up well with the others.

Say what now?? Your exact words were that your money was on a belief that Patterson would be out of the league by his 3rd year. Someone tried to take you up on that by saying they would accept the bet and then you tried to change the terms. Are you saying you don’t remember that???

You are a real beauty

This is the most tedious exchange I have had on this board in a long time, which is saying something.

You do make my point about recruiting stories. Recruiting "experts" think that some rando HS kid with a good publicist will be better than MJ and Lebron combined within a year, and when someone, like me in this case, says something contrary, the recruiting "experts" lose their freaking minds over it.

The funniest part of all of this is he's flexing about being right about Michigan when a week before Vegas he said they weren't a national championship contender. He realized they were good at the same time as everyone else here
Scandalous if true

All this talk of a big frontline is tedious. UConn had better than NBA size in 06 and 09, and had great seasons that notably didn't end in championships. I still remember 6-foot-nothing Kyle Lowry getting to the rim over and over against our 06 giants.

But that was before the portal! or something

I’ve been tending to ignore ISU these past couple years even though they’ve been consistently highly ranked. Idk if maybe they don’t get the default coverage that those other programs get, but I feel like I haven’t seen so much as a highlight from them. Wasn’t Donny Marshall saying during the Marquette game that they’re must-watch basketball?

Yes - I know them vaguely. I think TJ is a great coach and they have some older carryovers that are solid. And a frosh guard that can defend. That blowout win at Purdue raised a lot of eye brows, would need to see how they do against the AZs and BYUs.

What color is the sky in the alternate world you live in???

Do you really think travel in Jan-early March is going to have any impact on games played over 3 weekends? Where they will probably be playing close to home. You think flying from Michigan to LA is going to tank their chances to win it all?

Discussion was around whether they could go without a loss.

I just took a peak at their schedule and the first possibly very interesting game from the UConn fan perspective could be a week from tomorrow at Kansas. Especially if Peterson doesn’t play, that could be a good measuring stick for us.

Will ISU be without their star big man? Because UConn was without theirs.

That’s besides the point but I’ve watched several of their games and am sure I’ll watch several more this season. I’ll happily read the Michigan scouting report from @Hey Adrien! and other analyses the week of the final4/championship IF we even play them. But No one wants or needs to be beaten over the head with Michigan propaganda by you for 4 months
Who's forcing you to read it?

There should be an academic study conducted on this thread.

In lieu of legitimate on the court complaints — we are 14-1 and clearly have a chance at hanging a 7th banner in May — our posters choose to attack each other instead.

I don’t see this consternation on the Rice Owls message board…
It would be a wonderful way to teach human behavior in a petrie dish.

To be clear I gave you a like not because I have any interest in Louisville. Nor because I like hearing about players getting hurt. But because this was the first post in a while with new news about teams outside of the BE.

Hard to get too pumped about Ville at this rate myself. Right now, biggest focus is keeping a close eye on contenders to see what the field looks like, and watching some of these second tier BE schools face each other (Nova, StJ, SHU) to see if one of them step up.

Another team I have no sense of is Vandy.
