How many D 1 schools are there...times 12 to 15 players. Do the math.
What are you talking about? Why would you think the lower ranked players pan out more than the higher ranked players and what does that have to do with math?

Simple, there are only 50 top 50 players. Every other player would be outside the top 50.
Mikal Bridges mock draft 8th rivals 95.
Robert Williams mock draft 13 Rivals 67.
Chandler Hutchison mock draft 16. Rivals 98.
Shake Milton mock draft 23, Rivals 66.
Khyri Thomas mock draft 24 no rivals ranking, 3 stars.
De’Anthony Melton mock draft 28. Rivals 120th.
Jacob Evans mock draft 29th, Rivals 99.
Landry Shamet mock draft 30th. Rivals 88.
So in the most recent mock draft 8 of the 30 players listed are not even close to to 50 players. To me, the rankings are on somewhat reliable.

You're the one making this top 50 versus every other college basketball player in the world argument. All I asked you was if you think more lower ranked recruits pan out than higher ranked recruits?

One of the dumbest arguments that refuses to die is that UConn never got top recruits.

It’s nonsense - our best teams under Calhoun were always terrifically-talented teams.

It's such a load of cr@p. People pretending we were putting all these 30 win seasons together with all these recruits nobody else wanted. We must be the only board that routinely has people arguing it's better to get low ranked 3 star recruits than it is to get 4 and 5 stars.

Our championship teams...

1999: 5 star players --> Rip, KEA
4 star players --> Ricky, KFree, Jake, Rash, Antric, Edmund, Mouring. The only guy who wasn't was Souleymane.

2004: 5 star players --> Charlie V, Taliek
4 star players --> Ben, Emeka, Rash, Denham, Marcus Williams, Marcus White, Boone. The only guys who weren't were Tooles and Hilton.

2011: 5 star players --> Kemba, AO
4 star players --> Bazz, Lamb, Roscoe, Jamal Coombs-McDaniel. The others were Niels, DBev, Okwandu, Wolf, and Olander.

2014: 5 star players --> Daniels
4 star players --> Bazz, Boat, Facey, Omar. The others were Niels, Leon, Nolan, TSam, Olander, Amida, Kromah.

We have always had extremely talented teams and were usually stacked with guys ranked in the 40-70 range. The Hilton to lottery pick was an extreme outlier, not the norm.

For some context...

2016: 5 star players --> Alterique, Jalen, Purvis
4 star players --> Facey, Diarra (RS), Enoch, Larrier, Vance Jackson, Juwan Durham. Amida and Vital are the other two

2017: 5 star players --> Alterique, Jalen
4 star players --> Diarra, Larrier, Polley (depending on service,) Carlton (depending on service).

Antric. Any serious discussion that has Antric as a 4 star has a credibility issue.

Antric Klaiber, a 6-foot-10 forward from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va., completed an official recruiting visit to UConn Thursday and may be prepared to give an oral commitment to the Huskies by Sunday.

Klaiber, rated the No. 41 prospect in the country before the season by recruiting analyst Bob Gibbons, indicated to the coaching staff that UConn is his top choice.

Uconn May Be Close To Adding Forward

Antric was actually a big-time get. He was forced to play out of position and obviously never turned into much of anything.

So if we toss out those two dudes ranked in the 60's (since you said "not even close to top 50" and the sixties are pretty close), your argument is that 6 of the top 30 players aren't ranked in the top 100. So 20% percent. And you don't see this as an argument against your conclusion that rankings don't matter at all?

You can throw out anecdotal names of great uconn players that were lower ranked and identified and coached up by Calhoun all day. It's a pretty simple fact - higher ranked players don't always pan out, but they do so at a higher clip than lower ranked players.

True enough. Rephrasing his point, of the top 30 in the mock draft, and leaving out international players and those ranked outside the top 120, 8 were ranked 51-120 and approximately 15 ranked 1-50. So a top 50 high school player is slightly more than twice as likely to be drafted in the first round than a #50-120 player.

That's valuable but it's not enough of a difference to justify, for example, neglecting Bonzie Colson in favor of slightly increasing your chance to get Hamidou Diallo.

Problem is a program like Wichita Sate has only had one count em one Four-Star recruit in the last 7 years (I didn't bother looking any further) and Zero 5-Star recruits during that time period - yet their coach is able to blend the players he gets into a team and maximize whatever potential they had to turn them into a perennial Top 25 if not (most years) Top 10 program. Yet we stay stagnant with our 4 and 5 Star recruits. Of all the success and great players they have had Markis McDuffie is the only 4 - Star recruit.
