That buzz faded quickly.

They’ll still get good kids, but it seems like they really swung and missed on their golden opportunity. At some point, I think Penny is going to get fed up with all the noise and goes back to grassroots.

Very interesting to see this. I always think back to the Ben Simmons L$U documentary and imagine how quickly he would of done the same thing. I'm assuming the uncertainty with the virus had some role to play here as well.

So Wiseman and Green will end up playing a combined three games for Memphis. Sucks for that fanbase. So much hype and anticipation and almost nothing comes out of it.

I mean it reeked of a used car salesman approach from day 1. Didn't seem sustainable

Can anyone explain (serious question) why kids can play in the G League out of HS, but not the NBA? These are 18 year old adults, if they think their best option is going straight to the NBA then let them go.

Because the NBA owners and players association agreed that they didn't want them until they were older.

$500k contract for one year? God bless the kid. Every top HS kid is going to take that offer.

Isaiah Todd is joining the same G-League team, plus it's in SoCal. College hoops teams might as well stop recruiting the top ten HS prospects.

It's a dumb rule under the current, aging CBA. It'll be trashed in two years.

Aren't the g league teams funded by certain NBA teams (kinda like farm teams)? So who is the actual entity paying these kids? Is the NBA purposely sabotaging college basketball even though they created the current rule

This is a new Select Team located in SoCal.

The G League will create a “Select Team” in a designated city with a few roster spots for elite high school players who want to play professionally instead of going to college, sources said. The rest of the roster will be made up of veteran players.

The “Select Team” will play a reduced schedule of about 20 games, sources said, which is much fewer than the league’s 50-game schedule.

I'd assume all NBA teams pay into a fund that will pay these kids. Wild that this kid is making $500k to play 20 games.

If you go straight to G-league, do you have to enter the draft before going to the NBA (sorry if a stupid question)?

No, they will be eligible the following year for the draft.

If they start offering that much money to the top 5-10 kids in each class then forget about even recruiting those kids. I'd imagine most of them would take that deal and prepare for the NBA that way.

While Green is signing up to play in the NBA G League, multiple sources told 247Sports this won't be a normal G League setup and the program will be tailored for Green and other elite high school recruits. Green is not expected to be the only prospect in the 2020 recruiting class to go that route.

This is substantial news. The NBA finally made a developmental path that's way too good for elite prospects to pass up.

I think it's a good thing for everyone involved. Top players should be able to get paid right away and college basketball sorely needs some continuity. The last dozen years of "great youth vs good experience" in college hoops have been underwhelming.

This will put a lot of butts in G-League seats too. Might actually start making money off of it. Imagine if you had been able to go see Zion live in a high school gym for 5 bucks. People will be interested in that.

Players will get a solid paycheck and as much training as they want with good coaches too. It seems like a win-win for the players and front offices. Only downside being the hype and exposure of high major NCAA games.
