2025 Recruiting: Jacob Ross Visit (Brother of Jayden Ross)

.-.
He was a top 75 kid a couple years ago but his ranking fell like a rock to a three star #188.

Yes. I vaguely remember during Jayden's recruitment, people were talking about his younger brother, who was a potential stud.

Ehhh….he didn’t really fall - some internet types might have overhyped him for a minute or two, but he was being recruited at the mid-major level throughout.

Minnesota was the outlier and they moved on after the coaching change.

.-.
I spoke to him for a while at the team hotel in NYC during the BET, really nice well-spoken kid. Talked about loving UConn but going to play in Minnesota - I think would be a good add in terms of an athletic body. I did like having the Diarra brothers on the bench together for the last few years!

It’s not puzzling from our perspective, but puzzling from his.

He’s never going to see the floor.

If he just wants a degree and to hangout roomates with his brother it makes sense. If he wants to play basketball in a game that matters... yeah, not so much.

Maybe the plan could be to play here for a year and get some good practice film to try to go to a lower-end HM school

Maybe he's betting on himself. Maybe loads of lower ranked high school kids emerge to be really good players. I mean they're not called, Never-to-be-developed-well-enough-to play-players.

Or he could say "I was on the team that just won its 7th national title."

If he wants to come here, why not, welcome aboard Jacob!

Kinda neat to see a kid prioritizing teaming up with brother at an elite program over better chance at playing time elsewhere. Also, it’s not like the addition of him will cancel out the team’s plans with recruiting and there’s zero chance the team is promising him a role out of the gate.

Yeah, mind as well add some developmental pieces, we have these open scholarships, need practice bodies.

Interesting to contrast the roster construction styles of Hurley vs Pitino. Hurley seems to want to go about 10 deep w 3 long term developmental pieces or practice bodies, Pitino seems to want 13 kids who will all compete for time.

At some point, between now and late August, a large amount of developmental to mid level kids in the portal, are gonna need a basic scholarship. Imagine not getting the NIL you wanted and you don’t have a scholarship or a scholarship that’s worth anything. So maybe a redshirt year, as a practice player, isn’t a bad idea for some.

It makes a ton of sense. Maybe you surprise and develop into someone who gets minutes. Otherwise you have access to some of the best facilities and training in the country and set yourself up to transfer in a year or two with a chance to get some playing time and maybe make some money.

It’s also a $ thing I suppose. Need cheap players to fill out the 11-13 spots.
