We knew this was a risk based on statements recently from Geno. Now there is some closure to her status for the season. Board doesn’t have to speculate anymore and hopefully this surgery went well and she can come back ready to play in 24-25

The good news is that the surgery that Yanna had for the chronic condition of patellar tendinitis (jumper’s knee) is usually successful and has a 3-4 month recovery period. At the end of the day, having a healthy Yanna, who can elevate, back in the lineup, is a definite plus for UConn going forward.

That’s three - Jana, Azzi, and Ayanna. Caroline is a ?

Every time I come to the Boneyard nowadays, I am hoping that there is not a duplicate type thread for Caroline. But as each game comes and goes, so far, it seems more likely that it will happen.
Good luck to Ayanna.

I'm like others in wondering why they didn't fix it right after last season. This surgery has a pretty quick recovery and she might have missed the summer circuit but certainly would have been ready for the new season. I have a feeling that Caroline is evaluating her future too. Having seen first hand what a serious head injury can do to an athlete I would certainly err on the side of caution.

At some point, we need to stop accepting the 'they've been injured since High School' excuse. If that were the case, the responsible thing for the team to do would have been to deal with it last year.

Yes and no. From what I recall last season, her knees weren't the primary reason why she was out of games.

Sometimes these issues can be rehabbed without needing surgery. Surgery should be a last resort, especially when it comes to the knee in my opinion.

All my best wishes to Ayanna. I hope she recovers well and gets a head start on academics. I can hardly wait until next year to see what she can do.

The fact is I’d already figured this into my expectations. Caroline too. Now I’m thinking exclusively in terms of the rotation we’ve used for the last couple games. That’s who the Huskies are this year. That’s who Geno is focused on, and I hope the clarity about who is actually available helps the team focus too.

If Caroline defies all expectations and returns in the spring, so much the better. I will sing her praises and worry about every bump she gets in the paint, since she’s a personal favorite. But for now this is the team Paige and Geno have to work with. They will go as far as Paige can take them, and there really is no knowing how far that will be. After her sophomore season I’ve learned never to count her out. I will celebrate whatever they can accomplish.

Best wishes to Ayanna, and looking forward to seeing her at 100% next season.

UConn obviously recruits quality individuals/athletes who are highly motivated.

The downside of their year round effort to continually improve is susceptibility to overuse injuries. I think that explains a lot of what we are seeing.

Overuse is one factor, but genetics can also be part of it. Sometimes people don't know until they get involved in high level sports.

For me, I'm susceptible to knee issues because I'm flat footed. Spent the second half of my HS basketball career going to physiotherapy to deal with patella femoral syndrome in both knees.

The first half was spent seeing my regular doctor and being told nothing was wrong because they didn't have the expertise to diagnose the issue. If it wasn't for a volleyball coach I babysat for, who sent me to a specialist I don't know if I would have ever known.

4 players on bench. This team has the worst injury luck of any team, any sport, in history. At least for consecutive years.

Also, Caroline is not a question mark in my book, maybe it is "officially."

“we need to stop accepting they’ve been injured since high school excuse”
So whoever we is not owed any explanation
About players health and injuries
And the inference that the team is not acting responsibly is insulting to the medical people and coaches, who work diligently on the players health every day
Perhaps some empathy for all those involved might be a healthier way to make a comment

I really wish these chronic injuries would be taken care of sooner - like before they even start out at college. She's been dealing with this since high school, and now 2 years into college it's finally getting addressed.

Yeah I know. Not a doctor. I'm not questioning the MD's, just wishing as a fan that these kids who have chronic issues coming out of HS were addressed earlier.

Regardless, I know it must be super tough on Ayanna. But at least she knows know and has a positive step forward. Best wishes to her for a complete recovery!

You learned a valuable lesson--never accept a negative diagnosis. It may be best to travel out of your area to get the help you need. Doctors are human, often large ego's if surgeons, and don't know everything.

I've pretty much gone numb on the issue of injuries and, frankly, the season. But I recently stayed at a Best Western and want to weigh in on patellar tendonitis. That is a broad term that covers a number of afflictions, from a bone spur at either end of the tendon to "high kneecap misalignment" to calcification of an old tear in the tendon and probably more. So there is a broad range in estimated rehabilitation times.
