It’s a two-fer! UConn men to the Final Four!

It was an unbelievable shoot, but it was a bad decision by the Duke player trying to get the ball to the front court with 10 seconds to go. All he had to do is to hold the ball and Uconn had no choice but to foul him; make the free throws and the results might have been different. And I don’t understand why Duke didn’t call timeout.

Most of us expected that the Huskies would triumph in the Elite Eight over Hannah Hidalgo’s Fighting Irish, but in my bracket I had Duke defeating our Huskies in the Elite Eight. What a game!

There is an old saying that is something like, “What goes around, comes around.” I am old enough to remember Bobbie Thompson’s home run in the 1951 playoffs that sent to New York Giants to the World Series over my beloved Dodgers. That score was not evened until Kirk Gibson’s epic game winner in the first game of the 1988 World Series. And, like all longtime Husky Fans I remember Christain Laettner breaking Husky hearts and ending the 1990 Dream Season with his last second bucket and yesterday Braylon Mullins 3-pointer with a second to play evened the score.

We don’t know what will transpire this coming weekend. UConn will probably face off against a powerful South Carolina team that will have absorbed how Notre Dame kept our Huskies in check for most of the game, while the men will play Illinois on Saturday. Thus far in the tournament, I think that all of our most likely opponents (South Carolina, Texas, and/or UCLA) have had better tournaments than the Huskies, so the team cannot afford a slow start against such powerful opponents. Go Huskies!

Can’t find the front page but here’s the back page

I'd love to see an overhead view of the interception. Duke had an ocean to throw that ball in and yet could not. A crushing loss they will replay again and again. One commentator said they had 2 at the rim. If so one should have been at quarter court. I know ... hindsight.

The Duke player that received the inbounds only had to stand there and wait to be fouled

Yes, but he was a freshman in a pressure situation, who saw a teammate wide open and unguarded down the court and he instinctively tried to pass the ball. Kids make mistakes.

Contrast that with a little mentioned play by Karaban that followed. With 0.4 seconds Duke throws a 3/4 court desperation pass looking for some kind of catch and shoot, or perhaps a foul. Karaban, with the most experience of anyone on the court has the presence of mind not to try to catch the ball, but merely bat it away….game over.

Mullins is a freshman too

Mullins shot was absolutely instinctive, just like Boozer’s pass. The heady move on that play was once again by Karaban, who caught Mullin’s initial pass with 5 seconds on the clock, saw the other Boozer closing on him fast and got the ball back to Mullins for the game winner.

It was reminiscent of a game winning play in the NBA playoffs years ago when everyone expected Michael Jordan to take the game winning shot, only to see him pass the ball to Steve Kerr who knocked down the most important shot of his career.

Can’t find an overhead but here’s every other angle.

Hurley is a lunatic but he’s our lunatic
