Iowa Coach On UConn

She's looking to kill UConn with kindness!
She’s a good coach and in the back of her mind she’s plotting. As she should be. This is one of those pre holiday games where if you don’t stay focused…favorite or not…you can get got. We’re familiar with the visible talent on UCONN, but this is a test of focus…for starters and bench players. I don’t expect a blowout because I believe the coaching focus is skewed towards development of support/role players.

I'm going. Staying in Brooklyn for 3 days. Game + some sightseeing.
Seems to me to be hard for the team to look past this one: pro arena, rivalry of sorts (KK, Ash, Jana, Azzi gotta remember the Final 4), Christmas or few days before in NYC, walking around NYC Christmas-time never gets old. Like the trip to LA was big-time, this should be big-time.

I had to go back and look: Connecticut only played six players in the Final Four two years ago (Brady 14 minutes off the bench). The only other two current players who played in that game are KK and Ashlynn.

I have watched Iowa a few times this year. I like the way they play. I now see why. Jan Jensen is impressive. Talk about a smooth transition from Bluder to her.
I agree. I have seen them also. They have not experienced the kind of on ball pressure they will get on Saturday. I will be there with my crew.

It will be. I’m coming from Jersey and looking forward.

Most enjoyable interview.

Jensen understands the UConn program and she understands Geno and CD and how they coach & develop players.

Her team will be prepared as you can get for UConn. But as has been said by many coaches, playing them live is a different animal. UConn plays faster than video shows.

Okay. So UConn had the best team last year and everyone that really was vital except Paige is back and better. You add a couple really good players from the portal and you get a recruit that wasn't ranked but might be the best player in the class to boot. Iowa has absolutely no chance of winning this game and they are hoping it isn't an embarrassing loss.

I really think UConn can put so much pressure on defensively that any team is going to really struggle with them. LSU is averaging close to 100 ponts a game and feel like if UConn played them right now they would or at least could hold LSU under 50. They are doing all this and they aren't even playing their best 5 yet.

I'd wouldn't say that Iowa has no chance.........they're good enough to keep the game close if UConn isn't on their game and besides it's bad mojo....... ☹️

I assume that her reference to an all-world coming off the bench is referring to Blanca
My assumption as well - yes, Blanca!!

What must an opposing coach think when they watch highlights of Blanca?!?! It's almost like we snuck an elite WNBA player into our lineup. We've used the phrase "we have Diana and you don't" - I'm thinking it won't be too long before we slip Blanca into that phrase. Only right now, we'd have to say we have Sarah and Azzi first - gosh are we spoiled....

I see she had to get that dig in about the FF. I hope Geno pins that on the bulletin board.
Nah. I believe Geno (and the entire program) is way past the point of trying to interpret comments as "digs" in order to motivate the players in practice or in games. Leave that to other WCBB programs where the lack of motivation/focus might be a concern.

I was just surprised she went there. If that’s all she’s got it’s pretty sad. This is a whole new team.

Our bigs will face a challenge as Iowas bigs are pretty good. However, they are big and slow. UConns help defense should paralyze Iowa like it has against so many teams. UConn has settled in as a team with 8/9 players who look comfortable playing with each other. UConns relentless defense and quickness will be too much for Iowa. I expect Iowa to try and slow it down. Iowas biggest problem is going to be trying to get the ball inside. UConns defense is all over the place and their help defense is terrific.

Right Tony. The key is actually the backcourt not the front court. Iowa can score inside but the issue will be getting it there. they can shoot 3s also so they can stay in a game. I think the key matchup is KK/K9 against Chit Chat or whoever is bringing it up. Plus, who stops Blanca? Against USC the score was 12-9 when she came in the game and next time you look it's 18-9 and they are calling time out. Which didn't help by the way, ya think?

I don't consider Heiden or Stuelke to be slow footed players. Heiden may not be as athletic as UConn's but from what I've seen of her, she moves better than previous players on Iowa teams.

If the under 50 thing occurred with LSU I'd be so devilishly happy I just might retire from the sport of fandom.
