Interesting Opening Day/Week Games

The replacement players are around the same size. Czinano was never much of a defensive presence or rebounder. It looks like they can get some scoring from those players. Granted it probably won't be around 50 combined every game.

Just need to be able to move slightly, catch and hit a wide open layup.

That was the thing that surprised me most in F4. But never thought it was Czinano particularly.

Quick thoughts on opening day:

1. Loved what I saw out of south Carolina, particularly out of their starting back court of Paopao and Raven Johnson. Paopao has always been really good but she fit so well. She slowed the tempo down at times to get the best look. And Raven was aggressive and used her size. I think both had 6 assist.I think they are pretty slept on but they are the perfect vets to go alongside a super talented young crew.
2. I thought some teams struggled a bit more than I expected. Washington State was down at halftime. Oregon State struggled a bit as well. Any thoughts on Oregon States starting lineup or why TVO only played 15 minutes.
3. FSU seemed like they got a big win but I was a bit sad to see Latson didn't play. Hopefully she gets back healthy sooner rather later.
4. Quick rant, but shout out to Vonleh and Maddie Connors. Two transfers out of Arizona who balled out. Connors had like 30 and 11 and hit 6 threes I think for tcu. Vonleh was great last year and looked like the best big on the floor when competing against an All American. I don't get how or why they didn't fit in Arizona but this is the reason I really like the transfer portal.
5. I think Duke is going to be better than expected. VTech had a good showing but their real test comes on Thursday. I like Ekh but I fear the team is full of specialist, I wonder how they do when they are forced to play in the half court and Kitley is defended by a good post defender

Re (4) - Agree 100%. Head scratcher there.

Re (5) - Don't overlook Michaux who transferred from Minnesota. While not 6'5" she's an energetic player who could pull defenders away from Kitley because of her athleticism. Thursday will definitely help fans see whether this is the case.

The biggest concern for VT is probably determining who gets the Clark assignment. Not sure they have anyone who can effectively guard her (who can, really?)

I don’t think Iowa can guard Kitley, either, but between Clark is going to have the ball in her hands more and is maybe the best closer in the league.

Should be an excellent game.

You are quickly rising up the list of great Boneyard posters.

Re: #2, Oregon State is going to be fine. I was more concerned about Coach Rueck's decision making, but Coach Rueck had a solid game himself. He started our 3 freshmen guards and 2 sophomores in the 2nd half and flipped the switch on Arkansas Pine Bluff. OSU's last 2 recruiting classes are solid. TvO will get her minutes, as she remains an important contributor. Coach Rueck has a much deeper bench this season, so he will give more minutes to the new players in the non-conference. Good thing he did last night because they turned around the game in the 2nd half. The PAC-12 is absolutely brutal this year, and again, no team will go undefeated.

Mississippi State beat up on Alcorn State as expected and all eleven available players played in the first quarter.
First, the renovations to Humphrey Coliseum look great. I like the student area with the DJ. It adds a lot to the atmosphere to have them in that area. The club suite is really nice and it helps with some of the older fans being able to go up to the food area and graze and visit when desired. Most of the fans in their club seats were engaged.
Our starting five is exceptional. All are talented, mature and play within themselves. E Barnum looks like a completely different player in this system and alongside true post players. She is such a unique talent and has great size. She moves so well without the ball and is efficient in her scoring. She was fine guarding the four position. I also like her physical post play. We will really need that this season.
D Rogers, M Sheppard, and D Brown-Hagger all seemed to be pressing instead of letting the game come to them. I get the nerves but we will need them as the season progresses. Ball handling against a decent press could hurt us bad. Right now we have one exceptional ball handler. A Johnson would have been the perfect addition to this team.
I was pleasantly surprised by our three forward subs. Q Montague, N Gony and especially R Parker were all adds in their time played. R Parker is a very versatile player and Q Montague is a large human being that moves much better than I expected. However she looks like she needs a year in the strength and conditioning program.
I’m sure the turnovers will lessen as the rotation tightens and there aren’t the mass substitutions.
Watched the game of ESPN+, there were major technical difficulties with the audio and the entire 4th quarter was not aired. Liked what I saw and was glad to see the fans in the stands. It appears to me that Coach Sam is doing something right, hopefully the team will continue to progress and the fans will support them.

How did the student section look on the broadcast?

Broadcast was hard to watch, constant interruptions. All I noticed were the number of fans for an overmatched opponent. I hope Sam can sign better non conference for future games. I realize our SEC schedule is tough but interesting non conference games should help our recruiting.

Anyone watch the Harvard at Maryland game yesterday? Looking at the stats, how did Harvard get 87 fga in that game? Was there no attempt at defense by Maryland? Harvard took 36 3 point shots and 51 2 point attempts. By the way, Maryland had 67 fga in the game.

Wow. Now I have to go back and watch because that's crazy.

Of some interest to those who remember her checkered history, 6'4" Maori Davenport, a highly rated recruit some years ago, is with Arkansas - Pine Bluff now. Formerly of Rutgers, Georgia and Troy.
Pine Bluff takes on Oregon tonight at MKA after playing well enough on Monday to lead Oregon State by 17 at one point before falling by 9 at the end.
An ooc test for the young Duck team.

I was gonna watch Stanford against Hawaii, but the streaming wasn't working to start the game. It finally started for a few minutes, then cut out again. Might be working now but pretty irritated I'd already missed so much of the game by that point (most of the way thru Q2 I think). Looks like Iriafen is having a big game.

Numerous outgoing Stanford transfers are off to a good start. There are at least 3, maybe I'm missing some?

Or not so much of a test. Oregon was smarter than OSU and didn't dig themselves into a big hole to start the game.

She’s not there yet but Iriafen’s game has always reminded me of Aaliyah Edwards.

Broadly speaking, yes. I think Edwards bodies her way to the rim more (and collects a fair number of fouls on both ends), whereas I think Kiki has a little bit more finesse to her shooting. But I'd sure love her to bring Edwards' confidence into every game. Up 20 or down 20 Edwards is always fighting and playing to win.

Ole Miss and Oklahoma are squaring off. I'm a little surprised the Sooners aren't ranked to start the season.

@triaddukefan is North Carolina Central one of your teams? If so I apologize for what my Washington Huskies are doing to them currently.

Well now. My offensively challenged Washington Huskies found some offense and then some tonight. Pounded hapless NCCU 113-39. First time they've hit triple digits since Plum was there. Starters didn't play much in the second half, none at all in Q4. 2 freshmen led the way w/ 18 points off the bench.

I had one eye on a game I was streaming, but the other eye was watching Iowa-VA Tech. Good game. What a battle between Clark and Amoore. I was impressed with Wenzel. Hawkeyes get the win and Clark dropped 40+. They're gonna be tracking her chasing down the scoring record all year.

They are way down the list... probably around 12 or 13.. ... they are NCA&T's biggest rival.

Clark was amazing yet again and dropped 44 points on what she called a "bad night" lol. Another NPOY incoming for her I think.
Yup, took 31 shots and was 5 for 16 from behind the arc. Amazing.
