Interesting Opening Day/Week Games

UCLA starts Betts [6'7"] Dugalic [6'4"] Osborne Rice and Jones against Purdue, whose tallest player is 6'2". I guess Close figures with the twin towers she can play the littles in the backcourt.

My feeling seeing these games today.

She is a hot/cold shooter from 3. Today was an off day. I expect more consistency as she matures but she has the touch. She made a logo 3 in the charity event against Rutgers and I believe was 3-6 from downtown up until junk time.

In one of the All-American games, she started with 3 or 4 bombs, then missed the next few, including an airball or two. I don't think outside shooting is her strength, but she has lots of other talents and can work on her shot.

Physically imposing presence, too. I was really impressed. Didn’t know what to expect - Bueckers and Clark set the freshman bar so ridiculously high that I wasn’t sure Watkins would live up to the hype. But she looked as good as advertised.

USC looks to have made some interesting positional changes after robbing the Ivy League blind. Playing Watkins as a 3/4 and moving Marshall to the 5, where she is incredibly gifted defensively.

Ohio State started 19-0 last year. USC could have a special year in a wide-open PAC.

I'm not sure, but I'm guessing that all the Ivy transfers are grad students. They couldn't stay at the Ivy schools and play this year, so USC made a good move to recruit them.

40+ % in hs, but she takes bad shots sometimes.

Okay, I saw highlights of USC-Ohio St. Watkins is SMOOTH. She looks like she has that something special that very, very few players possess.

Some Boneyarders really liked Mikayla Williams, especially in the USA 3 x 3 contest. I really couldn't differentiate between her and JuJu in terms of who is better. Williams hit some nice jumpers in the LSU game, but she's a bigger body than I remember. I hope to watch both of them this season.

Frida Formann from Denmark is just torching the defending NCAA champions. Those Euros can shoot the three. Remember our French/Mexican Chica named Lou?

Yeah, Williams looks good too. Much better than the rest of her teammates.

Felt like LSU came in just expecting to win since they’re the defending champions and ranked #1. Colorado said not so fast. They showed up ready to play and took it to LSU from the opening whistle.

If both teams continue to play like they did today, SCar is going to run LSU out of the gym.

I saw a lot of optimism on Oregon St.'s message board prior to the beginning of the season. They are down double digits to Arkansas Pine Bluff at halftime. That enthusiasm might start dwindling quickly.
I didn’t realize Zaay Green was still playing. Was happy to see Maori Davenport is also playing. Looks like OSU has fought back a bit.

Also, kind of interesting that APB’s entire starting lineup are transfers.

Weird game. OSU was down as much as 17 in the first half. Went up as much as 14 in Q4, then APB got it back down to 3. Looks like the Beavs are going to survive.

Yeah, she's been around. She played 1 game last year, must have been injured so RS and came back for 1 more season.

Who was it that said Iowa might not miss Czanino all that much? Tonight they got 22 from Stuelke, 19 from Goodman and 9 from O'Grady off the bench. Clark was slacking, didn't even score 30 or have a triple double. 28/7/10.

FDU is a small low-major team team. It's against the bigger more experienced teams where Czinano's presence will be missed.

The replacement players are around the same size. Czinano was never much of a defensive presence or rebounder. It looks like they can get some scoring from those players. Granted it probably won't be around 50 combined every game.

Yup, that’s correct! I meant my comment facetiously. I think it was a very good move. Met USC’s personnel needs perfectly.

Mississippi State beat up on Alcorn State as expected and all eleven available players played in the first quarter.
First, the renovations to Humphrey Coliseum look great. I like the student area with the DJ. It adds a lot to the atmosphere to have them in that area. The club suite is really nice and it helps with some of the older fans being able to go up to the food area and graze and visit when desired. Most of the fans in their club seats were engaged.
Our starting five is exceptional. All are talented, mature and play within themselves. E Barnum looks like a completely different player in this system and alongside true post players. She is such a unique talent and has great size. She moves so well without the ball and is efficient in her scoring. She was fine guarding the four position. I also like her physical post play. We will really need that this season.
D Rogers, M Sheppard, and D Brown-Hagger all seemed to be pressing instead of letting the game come to them. I get the nerves but we will need them as the season progresses. Ball handling against a decent press could hurt us bad. Right now we have one exceptional ball handler. A Johnson would have been the perfect addition to this team.
I was pleasantly surprised by our three forward subs. Q Montague, N Gony and especially R Parker were all adds in their time played. R Parker is a very versatile player and Q Montague is a large human being that moves much better than I expected. However she looks like she needs a year in the strength and conditioning program.
I’m sure the turnovers will lessen as the rotation tightens and there aren’t the mass substitutions.

Wow! Thriller in Phoenix as Grand Canyon completes a miracle come back to win at the buzzer.

Trailing 52 to 36 with 7 1/2 minutes remaining in the game the Lopes who had suffered through a horrible shooting night caught fire. The Gaels didn't score again as the Lopes reeled off 22 in a row and win on a buzzer beater, a three pointer yet!

The Lopes always put on a great show, the students turned out in force and the last 5 minutes of the game were deafening as the student section helped Molly Miller squad push through for a really unbelievable victory.

After the game coach Miller had a look of disbelief followed by the biggest grin I've ever seen.

I will admit when the Gaels lead hit 20 midway through the third quarter I thought about driving across town to catch the second half of the ASU game. Glad I stayed, this game is reminiscent of the amazing ASU February 17th, 2019 come from behind victory over the Utes.

Lopes host Oregon on the 15th. Love Miller's willingness to schedule up.

NAU Lumberjacks traveled up to Eugene for a game tonight.

GCU preseason pic to win the WAC

Not a game to take much from, but my Washington Huskies cruised to a 76-28 thumping of Sacramento St. Looks like SSU is in full rebuilding mode in addition to losing their coach. Both teams basically took the 4th quarter off, it was a measly 7-3 in the final frame. UW has no front court depth, but plenty of options at guard/wing. Ladine is possibly a star in the making. She came on strong at the end of last year. Scored 20 in limited minutes tonight.

I ended up watching bits and pieces of a bunch of games. Opening day, couldn't help myself binging a bit. Anyway saw a little bit of Arizona. They might have a pretty nice duo in Nnaji and Cunningham.

This year's team looks like a better shooting team. They may not have the automatic buckets inside, but Cardoso isn't much of a step down from Boston. Last year's team lived on the O boards. This year's team can actually make first shots. I'm not sure that Fulwiley is a shooter, but she's quick, a tenacious defender, and a gifted distributor. I've seen her listed at between 5'6" and 5'10". I think she's on the taller side of that.
There was a constant back and forth on the Carolina boards throughout the season between a contingent worried over a roster build with so little shooting and the typical 'I gUe3s y0u KnoW MoRe thAn tHe cOaCHeS, hUh?!'

I'm glad we will hopefully not have to go through that again.

Wow, only 1 game, but several touted freshman made a big splash today.

Freshman guards on opening day have been brilliant all day. Juju. Hidalgo. With 30! Fulwiley off the bench . Wow.

Makayla and LSU still to come

We have a freshman guard... Double O. She wasn't highly touted, but she is gonna be a factor for us this season. She had 22 pts, 12 rebounds, and 3 steals... OFF OF THE BENCH. The 12 boards wasn't a fluke. I went to the scrimmage Saturday and she had 10-11 rebounds.

Oluchi Okananwa started out her senior season not highly ranked but ended up being around a Top 25 player. Mississippi State wanted her badly. She is an excellent player and great kid.
