I'm passing through Storrs for first time in June ...Need Advice

Weird collision of universes:

They just opened a DP Dough here in Athens, GA; went there and it just wasn't the same.

Andy Murray was there though

That’s how he is enjoying retirement?

Havent the 4 NCAA hoops trophies and hasn’t a lot of other hoops stuff been moved to the hoops training facility?

Unrelated general questions: When did Willington pizza become truly worthy of recommendations vs being just an OK oasis serving average pizza in a desert? Has it massively improved in the last decade?

I make the trip there when I'm in the area. It's a little different and not a classic CT apizza, but I think it's pretty good, especially when you live in a pizza wasteland like I do. I don't miss the winters but being without CT pizza and grinders is a tough trade off.

This reminds me of many years ago when we'd go to the local Fuddrucker's and Doug Drabek and his family would be there, which was understandable since we all lived in the same place. We didn't go there that often...maybe once every few months, but we'd see him there practically every time, as though he was living at Fuddrucker's. I guess they really liked it.

I'm going to be in Boston visiting some clients and then headed to a college graduation 2 hours south of Storrs. (**I have never been to Storrs**)

1) It will be in June. Will the bookstore even be open?

2) Is there anything else to see on campus that's cool or in the town (only really care about UConn hoops, but might try the dairy bar and or Ted's since I've heard about it for 20 years on here)

3) Is the basketball facility open to the public?***

4) Doesn't seem like many hotels, is there a better town to stay in north of Storrs (but not more than 30-40 mins away)

Any advice pertaining to this would be awesome. Thanks so much!

depending on what "south" means, Mohegan or Foxwoods would give you plenty to do

I agree, Storrs is not an overnight destination. You can hit the book store, Benton art museum, museum of puppetry (I didn’t know it existed, looked it up), Sports Museum, Dairy Bar. The walk from the bookstore to the Benton Museum, to the Dairy Bar will take you through the heart of campus. It’s a really beautiful part of campus. But, all of this can be done in a couple of hours. You might be better off driving south to the casinos, or Mystic are where there is the aquarium and seaport for the family.

Is Red Rock still there? Next to that grocery store on 44?

Used to be able to get massive calzones there from around 05-09.

Not exactly a must have or UConn centric but just curious.

You could always try and watch a UConn football practice and post everything on the Yard too.
Red rock still in business!

If you have time park and walk the campus—-there’s plenty of tradition and surrounding beauty (especially on a bright June summer day) to enjoy.

So I will buck trend and actually answer your questions:

1) It will be in June. Will the bookstore even be open? Yes.

2) Is there anything else to see on campus that's cool or in the town (only really care about UConn hoops, but might try the dairy bar and or Ted's since I've heard about it for 20 years on here) Dairy Bar is a definite must. You won't regret it. It's life altering. Ted's meh. I'd do Geno's or Wili Pizza myself.

3) Is the basketball facility open to the public?*** Yes, at least the Hall of Champions thing.

4) Doesn't seem like many hotels, is there a better town to stay in north of Storrs (but not more than 30-40 mins away) No idea.
The Nathan Hale Inn is right on campus and quite nice.

I'd actually rather drive an extra few miles and get a much better pizza at First and Last on Maple Ave. in Hartford. Much better pizza, food and atmosphere.

Agree on the atmosphere for sure but he’s trying to keep the miles down too. Pizza much better? I think not but that’s all in preference right? I can tell you this about First and Last it depends on the owners. Plainville is much better than Glastonbury and Avon pizza haven’t been to the original on a long while. Middletown sucked and is now closed.

UConn campus is really beautiful to just walk around. I recommend stopping at Storrs Center, the bookstore, Gampel and Werth Champions Center, the Dairy Bar. Stay at the Marriott in Downtown Hartford, right next to the Science Center (great for Kids) and across the street from Front Street Square and the Downtown Hartford UConn Campus. Stop at Vaughn Irish Pub from lunch and a beer or go to some of the craft breweries in Hartford, Manchester. Visit Dunkin Donuts Park for a Yard Goat Game or their Team Store. Or a play at any one of many theaters. Lots to do, you should have fun. Enjoy your visit!!!

Agreed it's all a preference!! The First and Last in Glastonbury, Avon and Plainville are not really owned by the First and Last people of the original one in Hartford. My understanding, and I could be wrong but this is what I was told by the people in Hartford, is that they bought the name and must use the original owner's sauce. Other than that there is no connection. Would love to be corrected if I'm wrong.

I would believe you’re correct on the sauce as that is very good and seemingly consistent in each. The thin crust at Plainville and maybe a little more char make their pizza a bit better overall but all are still solid, wouldn’t say no. You are spot on with the sauce though good stuff to begin any pie and key.

Thanks for some great info, i am only passing thru getting in late one night and staying a few hours the next day.

I’m having trouble wading thru pizza picks i will want to hit something close to campus but will drive a few mins if need to, love pizza! One time in south Florida i went to a place called new haven pizza and crust was super crispy and awesome - is that typical of Connecticut pizza?

Wilmington is a legit 5ish minutes from campus.

The red potato pizza is a staple item. A local delicacy. A must try if you’re not from here (unless you dislike potatoes, obviously).
