then I would like to see him named as Coach in Waiting. This would increase his credibility, allow recruits to make an informed decision, and I believe it will help our recruiting efforts.

Altough I would still prefer Shaka Smart, after hearing his interview last night, I don't think he'll be leaaving VCU this year, so if Coach Calhoun retires now, we'll either name Kevin or start a search. After reading Dave Borges column, I thnk we'll know JC's status right after the tournament is over.

He probably won't be leaving VCU this year, but Jim Calhoun probably won't be leaving Uconn this year either.

The whole rumor about Shaka being interested may be completely made up. But if Warde Manuel thinks it has any chance of being true, he may not want to pull the trigger on annointing Ollie just yet. Doesn't mean that Ollie doesn't ultimately get the job, just means that he may want to explore all options when the time comes.

I think the conversation really needs to be about the direction Herbst and Manuel wants to take this program. If they believe they have a shot at Shaka Smart or they really want to do a nationwide search, then I think its best to make that hire this spring. No one will ever be able to fill the enormous shoes that Coach Calhoun will leave behind, but a postseason ban may be a blessing in disguise for the next coach. It will give them a relatively stress free year to get things from staff to recruits to overall adjustment to what it means to be at UConn in place. The only way I think Coach stays, is if gets reassurance that Kevin Ollie will be the next coach. If that is the direction the program will go, then its probably in the best interest for Coach to stay on and groom Ollie for another year or two.

I thought there was something against naming a coach in waiting since UConn is a state school and all jobs need to be openly posted

I find it very hard to believe that Warde Manuel and Susan Herbst will be making this decision without the expertise and experience of Jim Calhoun.

I was told that when the time comes, there will be a national search. That doesn't mean Ollie won't be given an opportunity, just that the job will not just be handed over. There will be a process.

Verizon essentially copied this skit with their newest commercial. Man I miss Phil Hartman!

I saw that -- what a ripoff! (That's what put the Bad Idea Jeans skit in my head.)

And this is the way it should be.

That's the way academia does it. National search, 3 candidates, and yet the insider gets the job 80% of the time.

Coach in waiting would be good. I still want to see some evidence of fire coming out of KO's nostrils. Granted he hasn't had that opportunity to show it, but he almost seems too calm and under control. UCONN fans are not used to that.

and this makes total sense to me. annointing KO as the HC in waiting only solves the problem for 1 year (with regards to recruiting). if kids are worried about committing and having that "continuity" is important, then it works for the year he's the HC in waiting only. after that, it's all on KO or the new HC as far as recruiting.

if he's the best man for the job, then that's great. but i'd prefer to see a nationwide search. JC made UCONN. it remains to be seen if the next HC can do anything close. How many NC's has UCLA won since Wooden? how about IU since Knight? i'm not saying those schools haven't had great seasons, but recruiting, success, and NC's at UCONN are all because of JC, not because of the name on the jersey.

I don't like the "coach in waiting" tag because I really can't see a benefit and it limits your options because you can't change your mind if someone better comes along.

I can live with JC's input in the process, but he just doesn't get to be the final decision maker. That's way too much, even for a person of his credentials. There are lots of responsibilities involved.

I agree, Danzz, but if they are committed to Ollie, I think it works. If he's just one of the candidates, then I am strongly opposed to such a move.

You think Herbst is going to override Calhoun on something she knows absolutely nothing about? You think she's that stupid?

I doubt Herbst will, but I sure hope, and expect, our AD to be the one to make the decision.

I really found a liking to Shaka and his coaching ways/abilities......he would be a welcoome addition but if everyone believes Kevin Ollie to be the next guy, with Ray Ray on the bench next to him, then I will have the utmost confidence in what they do...................

But again, Manuel would get a pass if he goes with Calhoun's recommendation, and he puts himself out there if he selects his own guy and cuts off some of the support.

The Blaney sub coaching this year was a disaster and set the team back well after it was over. You can' t yank players in a nano second for minor mistakes but let that go on game after game. Itsends very mixed messages about the team's commitment to winning. Don't get me wrong I respect George's knowledge of the game........but basketball is a fast pace game of multiple adjustments and he was not up to that pace now.

Didn't Calhoun say publicly that he will be here threw the apr ban (if there is one) and wants to be coaching here when the new facilities are built?

I understand we have nothing to talk about because we aren't playing but I don't think its right to talk about Calhouns replacement until he steps down or says he is going to. Yes he is 70 but if he wants to coach till he is 170 I say let him. He will make the right decision for the university. I can't speak for anybody else but there is no one else that I would want to lead me in to battle then coach.

He is a warrior, a fighter, and a CHAMPION!!

You're right.

Jim Calhoun never, ever yanks players immediately after making a mistake. Never.

If he's the kind of person who's that insecure, and that lacking in confidence, I don't think he'd have been chosen as AD.
