We don’t need a direct quote from Hurley. In the article Benedict made it clear that part of the reason is Hurley wants more home and homes instead. He’s been pushing this for 2 years now. If you don’t think this move is being made with what Hurley wants in mind I don’t know what to tell you. Hurley wanted to replace 3 games MTE’s with home and homes before the tournament. Thats just a fact.

Would anyone at UConn have been trying to get into the B12 6 years ago? This line of thinking is flawed when you take into account the changing landscape of college athletics. And how the way money is spent has to drastically change for teams outside of the power 4 conferences.

The distinction is 3 game MTEs that require expensive travel. A bunch of teams decided not to participate in those this year(Duke, Purdue, Kansas, etc) and that will continue to be the trend. Look at the Maui field next year.

It's not about spoiled or arrogant. It costs us money to play these events. We make way more money doing local one day events (like Gonzaga in Brookly coming up, coaches for Cancer etc.) and just playing home and homes against good programs.

The UConn AD can't afford it anymore. Given our profile, we also don't need the exposure. Some programs may find these events are still worthwhile because they need the exposure.

I love the fact UConn men's basketball has spread out six championships over 25 years. They've risen from the ashes every time after even a few bad years. By any realistic definition, that's a Blue Blood program.

Even if this is a down year, I have no doubt Hurley/UConn will rebuild. And I don't think this will be a down year.

I can't imagine why he would ever leave for any other college position. There is no better college coaching position better than UConn. The only exception would/could be coaching where he played for four years (Seton Hall?).

I heard that quote and just meshed it with the early-season, pre-Maui pressers where he (and Benedict) have frequently expressed the desire to have UConn play more marquee home-and-home, MSG-type single game matchups with the creme-de-la-creme of CBB.

UConn is in that upper echelon (no matter how people try to say we aren't), and he wants our early season OOC games to not be dumped into a 3-game-in-3-day MTE and look something more like:

1-2 creampuffs, then Duke at Gampel
1-2 creampuffs, then Kansas at Allen
1-2 creampuffs, then UNC at MSG

I agree with you that Hurley shouldn't have said it how and when he said it. It created a false perception that we were dodging these events because we lost and the refs were bad. Instead the decision was made before we ever played and had nothing to do with those results.

Seton Hall has too many institutional impediments to success. Hurley would never leave Connecticut for Seton Hall.

That's not a knock against Seton Hall, rather it is a recognition that there are additional challenges coaching at a small private school versus at Connecticut

I took it to mean just if he somehow ended up somewhere else and that school really needed the exposure there maybe things would be different

I think he is having anger issues (again) with refs. Not sure if opting out of 3 day tourneys is the best solution here. But maybe that was his present motivation.

Also, there was commentary on the BY about home/away games with big name competitors being more profitable so Danny might be leaning this way for that reason as well.

I think he needs to go back to his less combative referee approach he seems to have adopted in Jan 2023 when he stopped a 4 of 6 games losing streak and went on to dominate the NCAA for 2023 and all of 2024.

BTW, I marveled at how well the Baylor coach handled a lot of difficult calls that went against them.

Danny's still the best coach with the best staff in college hoops. He just need to keep working on some of his antics so that they don't hurt the team which we know he loves. He'll get through this because ultimately he is going to be honest with himself.

Uconn tends to have passionate coaches!
