I hope Hurley reconsiders his stance on preseason tournaments

I hope he reconsiders also and maybe something closer to home would be more attractive, but the buy games need to be better. You could’ve swung a dead cat and found better competition than Le Moyne and East Texas A&M. They simply weren’t prepared for Maui.

The idea that UConn lost two games by a combined 3 points because they didn't play a top 200 team is completely insane.

Disagree completely. That we lost by only 3 utterly validates that if we were even a tiny bit more tested we would have performed better.

I doubt this is coming mostly from Hurley. This is a decision from the athletic department. Hurley is being a good soldier and doing what his boss, and probably his boss’s boss told him.
If that was the case there was no reason for him to say anything. He could have just not scheduled them in the future.

define "articulate." Hurley is well educated, and from what I gather he's an intelligent man. But there's not much of a filter between his brain and his mouth. I like that about him, but I'd hardly call this articulate.

With that said, I see one of his strengths as his ability to communicate with his players.

"Articulate" in my dictionary-- well spoken like Dan Hurley.

Well just call me Patrick Bateman because I happen to think iron sharpens iron. LeMoyne was DII a couple of years ago. The last 5 guys on the bench (including the trainer and team manager) would have beaten any of those teams. It did nothing to prepare for Maui except let them work up a mild lather.

.-.
I guess you could have a choice: you can have less talented players that come at a cheaper price and these kinds of tournaments or you can have more talented players that will help UConn be more successful in March/April.

I don't think it is all that hard of a choice -- you just have to realize that there are the options unless you are personally offering to compensate the UConn basketball program for the lost revenue.

Nah, We both like his mannerism.

A distinctive style in no way equates to articulate. I do like his style, but being articulate is not one of his strengths. That's not a bad thing.

I’m not a fan of even saying it in the media right after you lost 3 think the timing looked awful.
He said it a week before the tourney and was asked about it again in response to what was previously said and their performance and his answer was consistent pre and post Maui.

Now that there is a greater focus on Hurley after back to back titles, but living in a post information age on the internet, aggregators don't do any due diligence, read articles, or care to understand nuance. The goal is clicks. That's it.

He did nothing wrong answering the question.

Look at next year's Maui field. It's awful. Give me home-and-homes v. other brand names or NIL events that put money in the players' pockets.

.-.
For my own selfish reasons, I hope the UConn is able to continue the tournaments. I don't live close to Connecticut or NYC, so traveling to see the team might as well involve a tropical location that doubles as a vacation. Seems the sponsors for these tournaments are gonna have to pony up more dough to attract the big time programs now that the 3 game exemption is gone. For their own survival, I think they will. Just don't know if it will be enough.

I will say I wish we would at least consider coming back to Maui, it's an important tournament in the 'lore' of UConn basketball. The rest of the tournaments I could live without.

There’s no focus of anything Mr Clicks just assumed he said it after the trip I am so sorry!

I'm a fan of UConn either hosting something at Mohegan or just have some good regional action at MSG over the holiday. But yeah, I'm onboard with ditching the trip to Maui, Puerto Rico, etc.

As soon as Izzo hangs it up, Michigan State will take a step where they belong and we can take that tier. I agree, that seems like a lot for everyone, including the kids who have to play a 10am game? It used to matter, now it's going to be different going forward with NIL, etc.

Give me more OOC matchups on neutral sites

For the school and Hurley it will come down to what's more beneficial to the school. Will UConn get more NIL money and exposure from a tournament or 2-3 high profile prime time games. Win or lose, did playing in early game of the first round help them with either really.
I'm okay with it as long as the 3 games aren't wasted on 3 more game with cupcakes that don't help in any fashion but the wins/loss record.

.-.
There's still supposedly 3 spots open in next year's Player's Era tournament if they do in fact expect to pull in 18 teams (a number which makes zero sense in a tournament setting btw).

Oregon got $1.5 million of NIL for winning this year's tourney. Maybe that's enough cash to convince everyone the trip to Vegas would be worthwhile.

While a 3-game tourney, they played the games on Tu, Wed and Sat so there is some time to practice and make adjustments before the 3rd game so it's not the same as Maui or Atlantis or even Charleston where they play Th, F, Su.

Those type of tournaments serve as rewards for the players too. Having a trip to Maui, Atlantis, etc. is a great team bonding trip and pay off for their hard work. Places that they may have never been before and get to experience as a group.
Really? When you win the bonding somehow works better. The jet skiing was nice but…..

TWO DAYS AFTER UConn returned home from a disastrous 0-3 trip to the Maui Invitational, Dan Hurley took to the podium following the Huskies' 99-45 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore -- and dealt a blow to the multiteam event (MTE) format that has been a mainstay of the college basketball calendar.

"I'm not doing another three-game MTE again," Hurley said. "Moving forward, we will only play home-and-homes and single-game events in big-time arenas. I don't think I'll ever do a three-game MTE again."

While it might have come across as sour grapes, Hurley's comments were not just a reaction to the previous few days. The Huskies had expressed their future nonconference scheduling plans to multiple entities prior to the Maui Invitational, sources told ESPN.

They aren't the only ones taking this approach. High-major programs, including UConn, are steering away from eight-team events and moving toward four-team events, one-off neutral-site games and home-and-home series. At least five teams ranked in the top 20 of this year's preseason AP poll are in various stages of discussions over home-and-home series beginning next season, sources said.

It’ll be dead after 2028. Not sure why people care so much about these meaningless tourneys, the only one that matters is in March. As long as you are playing good competition play it wherever it make sense. Do what’s best for the program economically and to build the type of roster that wins when it matters.

Tournaments like this actually tell you a lot about where your team is. I'm glad we had the opportunity to be exposed because it inspired the group to start fixing their problems. Beating Memphis and Colorado at home would've given us cover to make excuses.

Not really. In fact I disagree completely.

3 games in 3 days in November really makes no sense, especially for young teams. You need to coach them up, evaluate, practice, teach after every game. This format just throws teams out there hoping for the best no matter how they are playing.

Charleston is a blast. Love it. But there's no way we're playing there again. They aren't pulling top teams, there's no money in it. I doubt even Atlantis will anymore.

These things popped up because there used to be an exemption. You got to play and extras 2-3 games a year if you participated. Now that's gone and it really doesn't make much sense to have 6 to 8 really good programs play in a 2000 seat arena.
This is the last year of the Charleston. It is ending.

We would have found other ways to discover who we were. You don’t need a frenetic 3 day tourney 12 hours away to do that.

Try reducing the slate from 5 sub 320 KP tomato can to maybe 2-3 as a start. Anything beyond 2-3 to get the legs warm is pointless.

I can’t imagine we‘ll quit the 4 team MTEs because then you’re giving up games on the schedule.
