A 2-homer, 2-diving catch day for Springer as he continues to get better and better (striking out less since moving to Leadoff spot). Ahmed was also 2-4 with two runs scored). They are both at their high water marks for the season (.269, .233). Ahmed coming around a bit - there were a couple games last month they batted him ninth, behind the pitcher.

Ahmed is now hitting well enough for his glove to keep him starting in the majors. If he ever gets up to a .675 or .700 OPS consistently, he'll have a great career.

Saw Matt Barnes had a couple tough outings and was sent down to Pawtucket on Sunday. He really throws hard but the thing that strikes me is his fastball looks really straight, not much movement.

40-40 is too optimistic simply because 40 homeruns is a very rare plateau now that there is semi-legit PED testing. Assuming he puts it all together I would bet on 30-30 (peak, not average).

@astros: A leadoff #SpringerDinger on the first pitch of the game is a nice way to extend the hitting streak to 12 games. #Astros

Quick question. Not that he is in the bigs, but is Tom Verdi still in the Mariners organization?

I believe that he was released in Spring Training. Don't quote me on that though.

olt has been on a tear lately in AAA. hit his third HR last night and has hit safely in 9 out of his last 10 games, batting .364 in that stretch. looks like he's back in his groove after fracturing his wrist

Red Sox turn to #UConn's Matt Barnes in pitching rotation http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/red-sox/post/_/id/46196/red-sox-turn-to-matt-barnes-in-rotation

>>With Steven Wright going on the seven-day concussion DL after being struck with a batting practice fly ball earlier in the week, Boston Red Soxinterim manager Torey Lovullo announced that right-hander Matt Barnes will take Wright’s turn in the rotation on Monday.

Barnes, who has made 21 appearances out the bullpen this season over two stints with the club, has been stretched out to start since being optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket in July.

“We’ve asked a lot of him, moving back and forth between the rotation and the bullpen, but he’s very capable of that,” Lovullo said before Saturday’s game against the Seattle Mariners. “The last start he had, the word we got from player development was that it was aggressive. He was throwing a lot of his pitches in the zone and doing a good job.”

The 25-year-old Connecticut native and former UConn standout has a 5.64 ERA with the major league club this year and a 4.17 ERA in 16 appearances (including five starts) pitching for Pawtucket.<<
