Hurley has a plan

Might have been more of an NIL/money issue than a basketball one. If Mullins went pro, we could have freed up the money for Freeman to be our top option, and then tried to find a Joey C type or a Euro on the cheap (and then in that scenario, perhaps Ball tries to come back). But we’d have been close to tapped out to pay both of them - and then maybe Nik doesn’t come.
No matter what happens in bringing in an additional solid player, there will be a Joey California-type coming in as well. If there is a Koby Brea out there in the portal, this year we aren't telling him he is surplus to requirements.

Should be zero, he will get his next year

I don't care how a two year deal is structured. I'm not sure I've heard of any two-year deals for any team or any player needing surgery/rehab.

If Solo is staying at UConn and in rehab for a year with no strings attached, that's great for Solo and an amazing show faith from UConn.

My guess is Solo has to have a two year agreement that potentially benefits both. I wish him the best of luck in his rehab. I wish both all the best for the 27/28 season.

Last year had a stud at every position. Ross is a good player, not a stud.

Maybe not, but most of our titles didn't have studs at every position. It's not possible to watch the last part of the season and not notice that Ross leveled up, especially his shooting.

During the NCAA, not once did I think him shooting it was a bad idea. He's that much better than a year ago. Especially if he's the 4th/5th option most of the time, he's going to be a massive glue guy.

These are the fouls per 40 minutes of Sanogo, Clingan, Johnson, Reed, Hines for their freshman seasons (junior for Johnson since he essentially didn't play the first 2 years). All were between 13 and 18 minutes played. For a guy that everyone talks about fouling too much I assume it'll be easy to pick his foul rate out of the list here.

I don't think we can win a championship or possibly even a final four or final eight without another quality big because of how easy it is in our league to get fouls called (on us at least). Reibe was able to give more than adequate minutes to keep the two headed monster going or we would have been up the creek. Again making a case for Diop ("don't count Uconn out after his St John's visit"). Don't care about the NIL cost. Hines and Diop with the rest of what we already have is enough to intimidate anyone in cbb. We are already shelling out a lot of money for Nil and salaries but getting to the top only is what Hurley is throwing around. Find the money. It is only the incremental cost which will or will not make the difference. So far the only argument I am hearing is money and only the insiders know what this is and all the rest is merely speculation (including me!).

We have the best staff in the country. They were not blindsided by this Solo news. They definitely have a plan and have earned our trust to get it done. I am content to see how things play out knowing they have the entire offseason to get the final roster in good shape to meet the standard we can expect from Dan Hurley teams.

Of course it won't be without challenges. The Solo news could end up being a blessing in disguise for our long-term success. Let's see how we capitalize on the opportunity. None of this would be possible without the culture Hurley and his staff have cultivated. We can all draw confidence from that.

It's funny to me watching all these teams try to copy Michigan and stock pile as many Tall players as possible. As if having 3-5 Youssuf Singare's starting is now the only key to victory.

Brea is the first guy who came to mind when I was thinking of who could help out this roster (beyond backup bigs). Obviously McNeill would be a great fit but we could really use a guy who can light it up from 3.

Solo having wrist surgery now will affect his NBA draft position the year after as well. This way he plays the following year with the repaired wrist, proves it out, and there's no questions about his health.

Fellas - As I stated in a previous post - County will be the backup PG. If we bring in another PG it will be 3rd string

two year deals are not worth the paper they're signed on. Duke's QB had a 2 year deal and left anyway to go to Miami.

I believe in Hurley having a plan regarding Solo and everything else. This is where championship teams are conceived in this new era. Unfortunately not everyone here will agree going forward , if we don't land transfer A or B, etc.; do we we need more shooting, size, defense, injury backups at various positions? NIL costs? Too many things that we just don't have the inside access to hear his thoughts .
So far Hines and Khamenia have been very good aquisitions. Lets see if anyone spots Hurley secretly meeting other players for lunch, dinner, first.

Ross will be much better next year, his problems were always mental. He now has confidence in himself and will flourish

That would be a horrible plan. To lose a national title shot seems an awfully large sacrifice to "make sure" Junior County (who may or may not be worth rostering down the line) remains on the roster (even though he still might transfer ala Reibe or may not be good enough like Furphy).

Maybe he has a better handle than you think

Current team with Diop and backup PG would be number 1 preseason team in the country and favorite to win the Natty..maybe big brother Bobby can help us get him. 😂

The thing to pay attention to is that Hurley prioritized Junior County's recruitment, and he is one of only two recruits we brought in. They were looking at a few different combo guards, also pure scorers like Meleek Thomas and a couple others, but they never let up on County thru the whole process. This is their guy, a bigger guard with combo skills, their Newton, their Demary. They are looking to develop County in this role, playing the point, expecting him to stay for a few years, grow into the role and provide continuity in the backcourt as well as culture and chemistry to the team by being a player that does stay for a few years. Don't forget, before we just learned Solo is returning for the year after, this whole backcourt was gone, Mullins, Demary, Ross, and Ball all outta here after next season. A returning player or three keeps the culture process more intact, and it's something unique to how Hurley coaches and runs his program.

Exactly. I don't know how people watch this offense over the last several years and come to the conclusion that it needs a traditional point guard. It sometimes stagnated with Smith because he dribbles too much. While we loved him when he was here, we don't want an RJ Cole type anywhere near this offense. This isn't the 90s or 00s. We want 3-4 facilitators who can pass the ball, all moving, all screening with the ball moving through the air. Mullins is a better passer than Ball. Nik is a better passer than AK (although he did improve at it). If Hurley thinks County can be a facilitator, that's good enough for me. Ross has improved in that area as well. We don't need a ball dominant PG. The offense is going to run through different people. I would not be surprised to see Nik doing some of the things we saw Daniel Hamilton do and passing from the free throw line area.

Meleek Thomas was the class before Demary. He just completed his freshman season and is in the draft. Our staff also had the connection from Dave Benedict playing football with County's dad.

I hope this plan works out in having him ready to be a good backup to Demary this upcoming season and then taking over the season after but Hurley has not done well identifying point guards out of high school. He's done great identifying point guards who have already played college. It's a really difficult job playing point guard here and County is not a surefire prospect. We need mid-major point guard insurance no matter what.

You mean Meleek was the class before County, don't know how I messed that up because I do know this, also Demary's first year here. I agree with the rest of this, Hurley has missed on a couple, Diggins, Nowell, as well as Mahaney as a transfer. County is unproven, there is no way around it. We would be a stronger team with another transfer guard that can play the point, and I am sure that we will get one with this big roster to fill out.

What are you talking about?
You don't risk the season on in incoming 4-star being able to change positions while moving from high school to college.

Especially not a difficult offense that even an experienced PG moving from a mid-major struggled to run efficiently much of the time.

If Nic Khamenia starts playing point forward like Daniel Hamilton, and Andre too on some level, we'll really be doing well.

In theory this is all correct with, I think, one exception. If other teams know your weakness is the press or pressing you had best have a couple of guys who can dribble the ball and beat guys off the dribble because you cannot always pass when the defenders are in everyone's grill. I also agree with your mention of Dan Hamilton and the point forward. The first coach who exploited our offense in this manner was McDermott years ago. Other coaches have caught on to this now. I think that's why Dan Hurley recruited Smith (to replace Diarra). He (McDermott) had everyone played very tight which made it hard to run our offense. If we had numerous good passers we could foil this by cuts and screens but we did not. Having point forwards enables looking over the defenders for the open man/men. It's one of the reasons why Hurley like big guards. We don't need the traditional point guard as mentioned but occasionally we have to keep defenses honest.

Far be it from me to disagree with the chicken littles who panic at the drop of a hat but you don't think saying we "lost a national title shot" in April sounds a little ridiculous?

This is Hurleys Plan which was just confirmed by Borges. In Hurley we trust. He knows more than you and I

It is what he would be risking if he is all in on Junior County, sole legitimate backup PG.

If the NCAA approves 5th year eligibility this summer, giving Ball two remaining years of eligibility, you can expect an almost immediate announcement that Ball will be back for the coming season, at least for the second half.

Remember that Ball isn't going anywhere. As a red shirt, he will remain on the roster, practice with the team and be available for action at a moment's notice. He may well be willing to come off the bench for a partial season, knowing he has a full year still ahead.

Hurley's plan may well have been to remove Ball as a complicating factor in getting current commitments without actually removing Ball. Ingenious -- and apparently working.
Edit: I thought that once a player starts the year as a medical redshirt, they can’t play for the rest of the season. I just learned something.
