how do you feel about this possible coach?

No that the clouds have sort of cleared, I'd expect the Boneyard to be marginally cheerier.

Don't set your expectations too high. If there's a bar, the boneyard finds a way to lower it. There's always plenty to complain about.

I am trying against all odd to be a more pleasant and agreeable person.

Probably spend too much time in the Cesspool though.

I don't go near it. Most people already probably think I'm an idiot... I don't need to go out of my way to confirm it. ;)

Not sure I understand all the Schiano hate. His rebuilding job at Rutgers was pretty damn impressive, the players seem to love him and the guy can recruit in NJ which is one of the most talent rich states.

Recruiting in NJ for Rutgers is different than recruiting in NJ for UConn. And he had to bring in some assistants noted for their recruiting prowess before Rutgers really took off.

If he eagerly pursues the UConn job, then I consider him. But if he is reluctant, I wouldn't pursue him. He knows what the UConn job is. We can't have a coach who's not ten toes in. That's the biggest factor for me, finding a young coach who is really excited about building up the football program and wants it to reach the stature of the basketball program, wants a legacy of building a program.

.-.
We finished 25th in 2007 in the BCS rankings. Rutgers highest ranking 16 in 2006. When did Rutgers ever finish anywhere that matters? Honestly... and yet their recruting classes were, on paper far and away better year in and year out. Schiano always has been overrated. He took a dumpster fire and managed to put it out... *slow clap*

In 2006 after the end of the season Rutgers was ranked 12th.
UConn has never completed the bowl season ranked ( almost positive).

I just think a lot of the hate is irrational here.

I don't want Mangini... Schiano neither, BUT.... he can recruit his tail off.. Question is, would he take the UCONN job if offered?
Alright then we may need a recruiting coordinator. Maybe when the Bucs fire his he will look into a double dipping job as he lives off of his NFL buyout. Other than that no way, from what I've read he sounds like a younger version of GDL

This is where you and I differ. My cynicism ended Monday morning, apparently that is when yours began.
No...wrong again. I was born and raised in CT. It's in your blood from day 1 but...... to get back on topic, does or can Schiano fill enough of these criteria to be a serious candidate:
  • Because CT is such a tiny state the recruiting pool is tiny also, can he talk 3...4....5 star kids from outside CT to come to UConn? Can anyone at this point?
  • How is his repertoire with CT high school coaches? Other New England, NY high school coaches? Having them in your pocket is better than not having them. Or does it matter? How much legit D-1 talent is actually in New England?
  • Will he get a pass from donors, alum and fans? If initially yes are they gonna give him more than a year or will another 5-7 or 6-6 season in 2014 put him in the dog house faster than Coach P?
  • Would he be able to relate to the kids still in the program or already verbally committed or will there be a mass exodus?
  • Is this guy gonna butt heads right off with admissions? With faculty? What is his track record working with his peers at the school?
  • Is this guy a salesman? Is he going to be able to sell UCONN to CT residents(especially Fairfield County) to build a bigger fan base? Can he enlist the media to aid in selling UConn football to the nation? Lets face it the national media has not been UConn friendly as of late. Can Schiano or anyone for that matter get the media in their corner? If perception is key whoever comes in is going to have to be able to change the perception most of the nation has towards UConn football.
  • How long can you count on this guy to realistically stick around if he is successful up here? If he could turn UConn around quickly he'd be a hot product, hell, anyone would if they could get this program in contention for a top 25 ranking soon. As soon as Edsall became a relatively hot commodity he bolted. Will Schiano?
Over all reaction even in this forum it's almost split 50/50 about the guy. Personally I'd like to see what Weist does for
the rest of this season and possibly add his name to the list of candidates. Whoever comes next is gonna have to hit a
home run with the fans, the student athletes, recruits and the media pretty much right away cause another year or two
of losing seasons and no bowl might just put the final coffin nail in any Div 1 football in CT. Who ever it is I hope they are named BEFORE New Years Day.

UConn 25th final 2007 BCS rankings: http://secure.footballfoundation.org/pdf/BCS07/NFF.PIAD.120207s.pdf

Rutgers 16th final 2006 BCS rankings: http://secure.footballfoundation.org/pdf/bcs06/120306s.pdf

Rutgers did finish 12th in the AP that year... which will get you a nice t-shirt if you go to Syracuse.

So, again as I said, UConn has never completed the bowl season ranked as they lost to Wake Forest in Charlotte.

Rutgers finished 12th after beating Kansas State in the Texas Bowl.

Again, the programs are very similar but finishing 12th is pretty good as is the Fiesta Bowl appearance.

The difference being that in 2006 the Big East was one of the best leagues in America with Rutgers, West Virginia and Louisville. In 2011...not as much.

I guess I forgot to add that I hope that TJ Weist hits a Home Run out of The Rent or at least a 60 yard field goal with plenty to spare. He seems like so far he talks the talk lets just hope he walks the walk. Go Huskies!!!!!!!!!
I know there are a lot of issues to clean up as he moves forward, I hope he can pull them out of the ditch that this bus was driven into.

.-.
His record is NOT very good! He has coached 76 Big East games and only won 28!

To me, that's a perfect example of how silly it is to take a college record and think you don't have to look at it, as if it were an NFL record. The Rutgers team he inherited was the long time doormat of eastern college football. Of course his record sucked -- it takes time -- a good deal of time -- to really move a college program up a few levels. He accomplished that.

That's as silly as using Edsall's record his first few years of coaching I-A football of indicative of anything other than the difficulties of the challenge he faced.

8-13 conference record his last three years and a terrible sideline coach, also the master of the cupcake schedule to pad his win loss record, and his win loss record still stinks. Rutgers is doing better without him and now he is creating havoc at his current job. He would steal our money and further torch the program then laugh at us on the way out.

Zero conference championships with better recruits than we had and he won't be able to recruit as well in CT, stuck in the AAC when Rutgers is in the B1G, not to mention the fact that he is slimy.

We are all assuming he will be available because we all think he will be fired for being an asswipe who alienated his current team, and you would support this guy? Do you sell helicopters on the side?

Right now, a successful TJ is my first option. It puts us a year ahead on digging out of the hole we are in. (By the way if does work out Warde looks a lot smarter doesn't he?)

If not, I'd give Shady a lot of consideration. We know he has done a successful rebuilding job already. RU and UConn we analogous at the time. We could do (and have done) far worse.

Someone said it perfectly. We could do better, we could do worse.

The fact it is even a discussion is making me sick to my stomach. I can't stand him. I hope we don't hire him, but if we do, "keep chopping".

He looks great in comparison to P, but who doesn't?

.-.
For the love of BBQ on a Popsicle stick, taking a dead cat program at a state school located in a recruiting hot bed and giving them a pulse is not all that impressive. The impressive part is how screwed up were they beforehand.

TJ is in a tough position, and I'd like to give him a fair shot.......with what TJ has inherited, its as bad as what Greg Schiano inherited when he first went to Rutgers

Alternatively, if TJ doesn't do too well, I don't think Warde can look the other way after expressing the concept that UConn was not living up to his expectations. (This is the part that may not be fair to TJ.......but unfortunately that is the business of BIG TIME COLLEGE football).

I'd take Greg Schiano in a second if TJ was shown the door. I know fans loved to pick on his style(s), but he accomplished something none of our previous coaches equaled:

* recruited highly regarded athletes (not talking stars......point is quite a few well established and recognized college football brands also offered his recruits)

* excited a fan base state wide

* rumored to have had a waiting list for season tickets

*got finances to expand a stadium

*a number of his players are quite successful in the NFL (not picking on UConn's alumnae)

*multidimensional exciting offense........never was lacking for talented QB's, RB's or receivers

*did not win any BE titles, but very seldom got blown out by WVU, Cincinnatti, Louisville or Pittsburgh.....most of the time very competitive with stiff OOC competition

Did anyone ever hear the so called "experts" on any sports channel refer to Rutgers, in Schiano's final years, as irrelevant on the college football map.

Now, if we take off our blue colored glasses, objectively look at those points, in my mind I can understand why the BIG, any other of the power 5, or a moderate college football fan across the country, would have a positive perception of Rutgers, and not so much of UConn

*everyone plays weak OOC schedules......I wouldn't exactly gloat over UConn's scheduling of quite a few OOC marshmellows.

* everyone has its share of WTF losses.....even Michigan

I'm rooting hard for TJ to succeed, but if in Wardes evaluation he decides to go in a different direction, I wouldn't hesitate to at least interview Greg Schiano.

UGH. Now I have to root for Tampa Bay every week. Please don't fire him.

Huh??????????????????????????

Are you claiming that cynicism is in the blood of everyone born and raised in Connecticut?

Just say NO to GS!!! He is another recycled BE coach and just like PP he would ruin CT football - and damaging beyond repair...

Mark Richt is trying to get a first class ticket to the unemployment line today against Tennessee!

.-.
I'm no on Schiano. Remember the story about his interactions with Pro scouts, keeping them waiting in a holding pen. Then you have the diving at the legs of the O-lineman in take a knee situations, just complete juvenile behavior. I want someone who doesn't play games, treats people right and get's our players to be all in. I like the way TJ has handled his interviews, his message post coaching change, going to the student union, already talked to many recruits. He get's it but of course the record will be the biggest factor in him getting the job.
