Houston Chronicle exclusive: Texas, Oklahoma reach out to SEC about joining conference.

The statement was “I hope”. If I were him, I be meeting with President and Trustees and laying out potential options, putting together a financial analysis regarding the economic benefits both direct and indirect of moving to a major conference, and I be meeting with legislators and the governor to discuss the appetite of buying into a conference like the B1G. This is an economic dev project with long term benefits. I’d be ready to pay in $125M to take in a half share ($25M) for 5 years with a full share thereafter. For the ACC, the local economic drivers are not nearly as attractive and the rev share is smaller, but, again, the is really about economic development and putting a real sports product into Connecticut . Connecticut is sitting on boat loads of federal cash they are not spending.
How about lobbying the legislature to remove the higher wage requirements four research and development projects within the University of Connecticut? That negatively impacts our ability to get federal grants, which in turn impedes our ability to become AAU. And that is a nominal requirement, at least, for joining the Big Ten.

And what is Dave supposed to do at this point? He can't go public with any ideas right now. I also think that the ACC may similarly implode. Florida State and Clemson are going to be salivating over SEC money and may join them.
ACC GOR will keep em safe...for now. Bur you're right. AD Dave with his move to the Big East put UConn in a far better position than if they had been in the AAC. If some back channel better offer emerges, great, if not. We're still okay.

Ole Dave was doing more than monitoring.

We should be their cheap New England date. It blows my mind that the MS has 2 teams in the SEC, and New England 1 in any P5.
Where there's not much to do, minor league teams flourish.

Can't believe an Atlantic League team was absorbed by AA baseball. In New Jersey! I knew Jersey sucks.

I have a couple of thoughts on this entire mess. First A&M…nothing says big time like having your conference mates keep you in the dark while they negotiate with your hated rival. wow! Just wow!

2nd I don’t know why but I have a sense that Oklahoma has seen it’s last days as a serious power. It said that years ago why Miami went to the ACC. Remember when the ACC decided to play Miami-FSU early in the season so the loser still had time to recover and have a chance to play in the national championship game? How’d that work out for the Canes? Oklahoma relays on Texas talent. A&M opened the door to the SEC some. This move is a wholesale move.

3rd thought Is that this deal will ultimately rely on a paywall. ESPN is losing viewers in droves. They struggled to extend the NFL, but ultimately gave in. They aren't upping the payment to the SEC without some other conditions.

4th UConn…I would hope AD Dave is quietly talking to everyone. But he has to be very cautious. There is a loud and powerful group of New Big East fanboys in the fan base who will raise the devil if they hear that UConn is going anywhere. Big 12, Big 10, SEC, ACC. Doesn’t matter. They are where they want to be and don’t care. They would rather raise the NEWBIE trophy at MSG in mid March than the National Championship on the first Monday in April. Some will even admit it.

CT leadership has always suffered from small minds. The last guy to try anything audacious was Roland. Pats didn’t work out but at least we tried. Now it’ let’s be a basketball school and hang with Nova, Seton, PC.

Lol I’ll grant you that if the ACC, BIG etc were to invite UConn, I’d wave goodbye to the Big East without even thinking twice about it

love these idiot writers and twitter clowns

"According to The Athletic, citing high-ranking sources within the AAC, the conference "plans to act as an aggressor" and "will try to poach the Big 12's leftovers, potentially as a group.""

what about economics?
You are a B12 university - making reportedly $25-32m per annum - happy to join the AAC whereby the reported LONGTERM contract is less than $7m (*for everything)? are you kidding me? this is crazed

So ESPN opens up that contract. Take TCU and Oklahoma State and Kansas State or something. Add $5m per mouth? The idea that the AAC has power is ... once again ... just inane nonsense.

if I am reading your numbers correctly, a NAAC would bring in 12M (7+5) a year. Do we come close to that Now?

No. But that league was killing basketball, and FB wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire. The BB recruiting has gone up several ticks in BB. We just did not fit in a conference with Tulsa, Tulane, and ECU. I see no way the B12 schools run to the AAC. The remaining B12 schools can go to their tv partners ask them who they want in the league and still probably get north of 15 milion in TV money. AAC can't offer squat. Now if the PAC cherry picks the carcass and you have say Baylor and TCU left, maybe the seek refuge in the AAC.

The only way the AAC has any power is if ESPN chooses to empower them.

The same can really be said about the B12 only with FOX.

It's likely that only 1 of the 2 survive and that decision will be made by whichever network chooses to play ball.

Those B12 schools won’t be making $25M once UT and OU leave.

There's is a lot of rumors of who did what with Somerset getting the Yanks AA franchise from Trenton. In summary, the usual Jersey political BS.

Jim Delaney was fired? A poster on the Kansas board says that Delaney was fired for adding Rutgers and Maryland. He makes a case for Kansas to the B1G.

"The B1G was the only conference who was able to get the major providers to charge premium sub fees in local markets and have their Network picked up Nationally. Hence adding Rutgers for the NYC/NJ market and Maryland for the DC/MD market. The problem is that those contracts expire in 2 years, and every major and minor cable provider in the Nation will no longer carry the B1GN as part of their base (or extended) package. The B1GN will will be moved to strictly a pay-per-view channel. Which means that the market that you reside in will no longer matter for T3 revenue. The only T3 revenue that a school will provide to the B1GN will be customers who purchase the B1GN. Viewership will also drive advertising dollars for that Network. That is why adding Rutgers and MD were monumental mistakes. That is why Jim Delaney, the B1G Commish who engineered the most lucrative TV Deal in the country, was FIRED (make no mistake about it, he was given the option to retire with dignity- or be outright fired; and that comes directly from former Conference Commish/NCAA director Chuck Neinas). Rutgers and Maryland will have the fewest pay-per-view customers of any school in the B1G; they will provide fewer pay-per-view customers than most any P5 school in the Country. They also provide almost no T1/T2 content in either sport. They get an equal revenue share and provide almost no content or viewership to the B1G. Their expense vastly exceeds the menial revenue that they provide to the conference. The member institutions were absolutely livid with Delay for permanently saddling the B1G with two more mouths to feed who provide absolutely nothing in revenue. It was one of the biggest blunders in the 100+ years of Collegiate Sports and Conference realignment.

KU has serious value to the B1GN because of our passionate fan base. They could charge $20 a month for the B1GN to KU fans and we will shell it out without hesitation to watch a couple of football games and a handful of basketball games. KU will provide more viewers watching a KU v Ft Hay’s State basketball game than the viewers watching a Rutgers v Maryland basketball game. The PPV customers and content and viewership that KU will provide for the B1GN is a significant aspect on our resume to the B1G. Added viewership will add advertising dollars- and we will provide new local advertisers; those won’t be large numbers, but it will add up to something. That’s just what KU can provide with their T3 content; remember that KU currently has the 2nd highest T3 payout in the B12- ahead of OU and behind only the over- payment that ESPN made for the LHN. We have fantastic T3 content; some of the best in the country."

These guys made some good points. In this new streaming era, markets don't mean squat. It all comes down to which team has the most passionate fans who are willing to pay.

This begs the question: how many people across the country are willing to pay for Uconn content? How comparable are we to a team like Kansas? How much revenue can an UConn channel full of T3 content generate per year?

And CT has about half a million more people… and they have more money. SNY ratings for UConn WBB are higher than most competing sports. So the NY DMA needs to be added in for us too.

We don’t have Nascar and cornhole to distract us.

True....

But you made me think about the positive correlation between the Talladega Superspeedway and college football prowess...11 of the last 12 teams in the Championship game of the CFP have been from schools within a fairly close range of Talladega.. As well as the last seven winners of the BCS Championships.

I could never see the value of watching cars go round and round, myself.
