Harvey: Warlick breaking the wrong kind of records

Have to wonder if Holly is able to survive, if the Lady Vols don't get to the Sweet 16 in this years tournament. They have a talented team and their Immediate Future (next year) looks brighter then UConn's, even with Holly as their coach. However, IMO if they want to win a National Championship, they need to hire a New Coach.

If dollars comes into the decision on whether to keep Holly or replace her, the following attendance stats might be a factor. (Found on VolNation)

Avg. home attendance per game:
  • 2009-10: 12,254
  • 2010-11: 12,537
  • 2011-12: 14,414 (Pat's last year)
  • 2012-13: 11,390
  • 2013-14: 11,038
  • 2014-15: 10,375
  • 2015-16: 10,412
  • 2016-17: 9,184
  • 2017-18: 8,778
  • 2018-19: 7,999 (10 g.)

A little naive, but the thought is correct. Then there's this:

Now, this is definitely a sensitive subject because Summitt picked Warlick to replace her and it is hard to let go of someone handpicked by the greatest coach in women’s basketball history.

When are people gonna let that one go??

There is a growing sentiment amoung LV fans hoping that TN misses the Big Dance entirely by stumbling so badly this season that Fulmer has no choice but to replace HW. Sad times in Knoxville.

One way would be to say, Geno did not handpick Holly!...as you said, "a little naive", how old can this "kid" be, he must not know the team from the Nutmeg state.

I concur with olddude.

The real question is not sweet-16 or thereabouts but inclusion in the NCAA field at all.

Geno picked her? Man, I guess he really does hate Tennessee.

I remember a 1996-1997 Tennessee WBB team with (gasp) ten losses, finishing fifth in the SEC, losing in the SEC semis, and barely stumbling into the NCAA Tournament, passed in perhaps on Pat's rep, with a Regional Final date against a wounded but undefeated UCONN team...……………………….

It was the same hope many had last year. And the year before.

Tenn is 12-4, they'll get their 20 something wins and make it into the tournament.....................if not, with all that talent she should be fired on the spot...........

I found this article strange. His main complaint is the lack of quality depth. This is so low on the list of issues behind

1) No consistent schemes on offense / defense
2) Poor shooting in general.
3) Players chosen by athleticism, not how they fit together.

Please explain how two Coaches go Head to Head 22 times and one Coach win 13 times, one Coach beat the other Coach 4-0 in Championship games ,but because the opposing Coach have a better over-all record that makes them the GOAT? How many people are saying Dean Smith was better than John Wooden because he had a better over-all record. How many Women Coaches have a 111 win streak? How many Women Coaches have won 11 Championships ?Let's be Real.

That was very sly of Geno to pick the least talented of Pat's assistants but hey who am I to argue with the greatest coach in Women's basketball history...

Very different team and very different times. They were a #3 seed in the tournament, so saying they were "barely stumbling" into the tournament is far from the truth.

In 1996-97 Tennessee played by far the most difficult schedule in the country...possibly the toughest schedule ever. 17 of Tennessee's 39 games were against Sweet 16 teams, and 10 of those were against #1 or #2 seeds. They had 5 games vs. #1 seeds and 5 games vs. #2 seeds that year. The SEC was also at its peak with 6 teams in the Sweet 16.

Tennessee was without a PG much of the year and caught fire once Kellie Jolly was healthy. Jolly went on to have massive games against UCONN in the Elite 8 and against ODU in the title game. Tennessee was also coming off a National Championship season and made the NCAA Finals the year prior.

Compare that to this year where Holly put together one of the worse non-conference schedules in Tennessee history, and the SEC is the weakest it has ever been. Tennessee is 1-3 in conference play and hasn't played the top 2 teams yet. This team is coming off 2 years of underperforming and losing in the second round which has created a disgruntled fanbase. This team is in serious jeopardy of not even making the tournament unless they start playing better.

Literally nothing about this team compares to the 1996-97 squad unless you look at what their final win percentage might end up being.

Oh, c'mon! At her retirement, Pat Summitt was the greatest coach in WBB history. And then, Geno surpassed her.

If Joanne McCallie still has her job at Duke, no way will Holly be fired. Duke is a train wreck. Just ask @CamrnCrz1974 . I really feel badly for him and @triaddukefan and any other Duke fans we know...!
If I may interject, these are not an apples to apples comparison. How many titles has Duke won? What was their highest attendance mark? Yes, they had a nice run in the late 90's early '00s (2 Final Fours; 2- Elite 8's and 13/15 NCAA's but then Gail left (and she also stopped winning). As for the tale of tape:
JPM- 297-80 (.788) at Duke 132-38 (.776) in ACC (which is a much tougher conference now. 4 ACC titles 2-2nd;3-3rd;2-4th and 1-7th place and 10/11 NCAA, best finish Elite 8- 4 times.
HW-165-58 (.740) and 72-28 (.720) with 1 SEC title, 2 regular season titles (these 3 these feats occurred her first 3 years) with 6 NCAA's 3 Elite 8 finishes.

The expectation is simply not the same. Plus JPM has done a better job in winning overall and in their league with less talent that will always be less given the gravitas of the Tenn program. And JPM evolves her players more than Holly.

I marvel at the roller coaster angst of the Volnation fans, though when the team gets into a mild losing streak like they are now, it feels like an MC Escher drawing in that there is so much more down than up.

While I understand the sadness of lost glory, the viciousness with which some of the fans write about Warlick and occasionally the players is just plain sad. Yes, the Lady Vols aren't what they were when Pat Summitt ruled the sport, but they certainly aren't consigned to the dustbin of history just yet. While they haven't been in the upper elite for several years, they are still a top notch team.

Of course, with better coaching ............... Oh, of course, that's why all the angst in the first place.
