This is so oddly gratifying to me.

To be fair he is not a "great" coach but a damn good coach for an extended amount of time. A "great" coach would have beaten Dayton in Round 1 this past year……..staying in that 2-3 zone which is all he can coach, allowed Dayton to win and gave his team little chance to impact the game from that end. He's a very good recruiter over the years with real good players, a soft schedule, a lot of wins and a lot of bad losses against teams with better coaches. He's about as high as I would go on that list and all the wins are the only reason……..

Ford would be bad, but not sure what Sean Miller has done to get himself in this group. I mean, that demolition of Duke in the 2011 tournament was fun and all, but come on.
I think they use recruiting as a factor also and outside of Calipari , Sean Miller is probably the best recruiter.

Okay that's nice but the reason most of us will (begrudgingly) be okay with Cal being up there, if not #1, is because he wins with his recruiting. Recruiting is Miller's one trick. Would you rather have Bo Ryan coach your team, who actually got to the FF (and consistently wins in the B1G i.e. not Pac 12) with meh-decent talent, or Sean Miller who hasn't actually won anything, even with allegedly talented players?

It is a slap to JB's results (NC, FF's, 900+ wins). Not a slap to his coaching ability. His system and his teams consistently underperform. That's coaching in a nutshell.

JB is one of the best regular season coaches in college BB history.

When it comes to games in Jan & Feb, he is the ultimate system guy. He cranks out the wins.

And he isn't terrible post season, coach. Hell, he is tied with Ollie which is quite a compliment.

Why? Because I defend a great coach? The fact you somehow think he's not baffles me.
LMAOOO please tell me you're just stupid or trolling. You've been busted for at least one of those options.

Not at all. The fact you and so many other UCONN fans feel the need to insult a him and Syracuse is somewhat sad to me. I miss playing him/them every year and have always respected the man and the rivalry. He's struggled in the tournament but he coaches the right way and has been doing so for decades. He cares about his players and has ALWAYS fielded a competitive squad.

Just because you are UCONN fan doesn't mean you can't respect an absolute professional who had done great things for the game.

Jim Calhoun himself said he was "honored" and Boeheim was his"parallel" during his Hall speech. The two are friends. Why do you hate him?

There's no way that Ollie is a better coach than Boeheim. I don't believe it.

Look… I really have no axe to grind regarding the Cuse… UCONN & syracuse carried the Big East for many, many years when the other big name programs were no where to be found…

That said, I'm sure we would be completely frustrated if UCONN was a team that fared well in the regular season, only to falter in the big tourney. Seeing our coach ranked highly against his peers would do little to lessen that frustration…

Of course, since we have had a Hall of Fame coach who, without argument, completed the greatest Program-build job in the history of Men's college basketball, and then handed the keys to Kevin Ollie, we would know nothing about how it feels to be a fan of the Orange.

I agree. His best attribute is that he really knows how to dig deep. If I wasn't on my phone, I would provide some photographic evidence to back up my claim. Hopefully someone can help me out?

You guys suck. I set y'all up for a bunch of free likes, and nobody took the bait!

To be fair, Shaka is not in the same class as JB at this stage. The guy's in the hall of fame, has 950 wins, and despite all our protestations to the opposite, did manage to win a National Title.
Except that this ranking disregards longevity and history. It's a ranking of coaches currently. Think snapshot, rather than movie.

I think he is a lousy coach. However his record says great. No way is he not in top five. Over 900 wins.

And they are usually 15-0 before leaving Syracuse after the New Year. The Hostess Invitational.

Don't like JB that much because of his zone and cupcake schedules. It irritates me that he doesn't leave central NY until Jan each year. That said, he still has a NC, couple of FF's and a ton of wins. Thought he would be in the top ten with those numbers but not going to shed a tear for him. His wife is a cougar so if you consider how goofy he is, he got lucky on that side.

The list is only to keep some focus this off season on college basketball. He just had the number one undefeated team in the country and faltered.

I don't think he should be ranked this low, but the list is certainly accomplishing it's goal. If current body of work (snapshot) is the criteria then K should be on deck.

Regarding Boeheim's track record in the NCAA Tournament, I actually don't think he's underachieved all that much recently (this season notwithstanding). In 2012 they lost in the elite eight, to Ohio State, without perhaps their most important player - I have a hard time calling that a colossal failure. Obviously in 2013 they didn't underachieve. In 2010 they lost in the sweet sixteen to the eventual runner up without a key player, and in 2011 they simply weren't all that good. You want underachieving in the tournament, look at Coach K. I've never seen a guy lose to a fifteen and fourteen seed within a three year span and take less grief for it.

I also think there are a lot of misconceptions regarding the zone defense. He's been incredibly successful with it, and I'm slightly baffled that people still question it. Syracuse's collapse this season had absolutely nothing to do with the zone and everything to do with their players suddenly forgetting how to play basketball. Syracuse's defense last year was as dominant a unit as there was in the country. Generally speaking, when Syracuse loses in the tournament, it isn't because of the zone.

In the last five years, Boeheim is 149-32 with three sweet sixteens, two elite eights, and one final four. He's won two conference titles in that span and turned in a more than respectable 11-5 tournament record.

Tom Izzo, on the other hand, is 135-50 with four sweet sixteens, two elite eights, and one final four. He has tied for two conference titles and also gone 11-5 in the tournament.

Shorten the sample to three years, and the results swing in Boeheim's favor - Jim is 92-19 over that time frame with a conference title, two elite eights, a final four, and an 8-3 tournament record. Izzo is 85-26 with a split conference title, three sweet sixteens, one elite eight, zero final fours, and a 7-3 tournament record.

They are very even, but one guy is viewed in a better light than the other. To me, it is a coin toss.
