Here’s the skinny: the game UCONN played last night was similar to the last 4 out 5 games they have played. Good enough to beat the competition they faced and probably good enough to get them to the SS...Maybe even good enough to get the to the EE. But, if they don’t improve from what we have seen recently, Baylor wins by double digits.

No problem, we all make mistakes sometimes, that's just part of life. Well there is a young lady on UConn, she wears the #10, she doesn't make mistakes. Even on the TO's it's the player on the receiving end of her passes that makes the mistake. They didn't go where they were supposed to go, Paige was two to three steps ahead in the play and that's according to Geno and CD. ;)
Paige is #5.

I have never coached BB, I know that our staff is the GOAT, I am not criticizing (just a question) and I haven't stayed at a Holiday Inn Express, so why is it when the opponents tallest player is 6'1 and Aaliyah and Liv are in the game, that they both aren't posted under the basket on each side of the lane and we just lob one of them the ball on every possession, for easy layups? If they get double or triple teamed, pass it to an open player for their shot?

It was a good game and I also agree we lost something when Nika was injured and it seemed to me that for part of the 3rd quarter, Paige wasn't shooting the ball. I will have to watch the replay tomorrow to see if that was true.
A good coach will always try and have their team play as if playing a higher level. Work on your sets etc. Yes, it would be easy to just pass to our bigs but that won't grow your team for later tough games.

Some thoughts on the High Point game:
  • First time I ever watched High Point. While they were undermanned, I was really impressed with how hard they played and how well they executed all game against UConn in their first ever trip to the Big Dance.
  • UConn’s defense was just fair tonight, but some of that had to do with the relentless action that High Point runs on offense.
  • Nika with another unfortunate ankle sprain after stepping on an opponent’s foot. You hate to see that. Let’s hope her recovery is every bit as quick as the last time.
  • Aaliyah is a beast in the paint. I don’t like the fouls, but to High Point’s credit, they caught her in a switch a couple times and went right at her.
  • Paige with a quietly brilliant 1st NCAA tournament game: 24 pts on 9/13, 9 rbs, 6 ast, 4 stl, 3 blk. I'm fairly certain that the best is yet to come.
  • Nice balanced scoring on 59% shooting: Paige (24), Liv (22), Aaliyah (17), Christyn (13), Evina (10), Aubrey (9).
  • CD maintains her unbeaten streak at 11-0. Next up are the Syracuse Orange, a team that will be a little more challenging than the High Point Panthers.I know the score but
I know the score, but we didn't play well. Way to many fouls, and way to many open driving lanes. Their guards, which on tv looked about 5ft tall on a good day got to the basket and got shots off against our bigs. We didn't space well. Ms Nelson is not shooting well outside and better be able to attack SU's big's inside. If she wants to draw SU's bigs out it's not by shooting but by screening for our guards to get open shots. If there bigs don't hedge our guards will get easy looks. SU has to big's that will be a problem for us. It seems if Anna isn't being productive on offense Aubrey is a much better fit against SU, and there bigs. She can pressure guards and crash the boards. I am probably in the minority here, but if Nika can't go I'd even take Mir over Anna because she can at least play aggressive defense and take the pressure off Williams (she has been playing great on ball defense but it can also lead to foul trouble) and Paige to expend the energy on that end. Hope it was nerves.

The refs made awful calls on High Point too. It was hard for the teams to get into a flow
Despite all the justified complaints about the officiating, we have no idea of the refs' names. But I just watched BYU/ Rutgers & Dee Kantnor's name was mentioned a dozen times. Some refs just seek & find the spotlight!

My observations;

1. Edwards was unstoppable. I had no idea she had four fouls so quickly.
2. I heard Geno screaming at Paige in the first quarter, also.
3. The defense went slack, for a while, once Nika went out. Aubrey brought it back, and Anna played aggressively as well. I think Anna may be rounding into basketball shape.
4. I thought Williams and Olivia had poor games. Poor games for them, that is.
5. Evina was solid as usual.
6. High Point was better than I imagined. They can shoot if you give them any space at all. I could see them doing really well in the Big East. Coach seems smart, as well. I would like to see them take on Marquette ( number tow in Big East ) , who was a quick out in round one.
7. Syracuse will require better basketball from UCONN. Defending their 6'7" freshman will be a challenge.

I think we are all asking too much to imagine that Nika will be back on Tuesday. ( But she did it before).

I don't think there was biased officiating, but I do think it was mediocre to bad officiating. Sometimes certain officials seem to hyper-focus on looking for even minor violations of a specific rule (the kind that normally happen many times a game and are overlooked), and confuse this hyper-focusing for good officiating. My personal opinion is that good officiating is as much about what you do not call as it is about what you do call.

Still, our game didn't have the worst call of the night. Get a load of this traveling call:

Good point! Arkansas is losing because the refs aren't calling fouls on Wright State when Dungee & her teammates thrust themselves to bounce off the defenders. The refs called those plays as fouls against UCONN the whole game.

Why do you draw this conclusion? Is it because UConn missed some layups, allowed some penetration, and committed too many unnecessary fouls against High Point?

Are you assuming that Baylor never makes such mistakes, or hardly ever? On what evidence do you base this assumption of the opponent's near perfection?

My opinion, which I hope I’m entitled to, is that the overall level of play is not where it has been for times during the regular season. And, definitely not what a team would need to be a Final Four contender. They are better than what they have showed us recently and can rise up to better basketball. With the lack of competition this past month, it’s easy to digress and still win. I believe that’s what we are seeing. Hopefully, tougher challenges ahead will see them playing much better.

I’m honestly not sure how much better we could have played in the BET to build up to the NCAAs. Maybe we eased up a little in the 2H against Marquette with a huge lead and only won by 34 but ... shoulder shrug. High Point played a weird system that doesn’t really translate to future games (although maybe Iowa could find some things on that film they can use if we both advanced).

Liv missed a few, CW missed one in transition, AG missed a real easy one (nerves probably - she had just checked in), maybe AE missed one, but it would have been an outlier since she finished a bunch.

Not too bad - but they are going to get harder on Tuesday since there will be more of a shot blocking presence.
Liv will be looking up at their post player Kamilla Cardoso (6'7") tomorrow. I wonder who is going to intimidate who?
