Is the SEC good again? Trying to keep track

They were never bad, but the bottom of the conference weren’t world beaters either. Good enough to be lower seeds and nothing more. Arkansas was the main glitch and that is because they underachieved all year as they are the most talented team from the SEC.

The top SEC teams are that good though, and UF is one of them. Doesn’t mean they aren’t beatable, just that they are very good.

I’m an outlier on this board in that I get a kick out of Cal. He’s a blowhard and he’s full of but he also knows it. He’s in on the joke. And he’s a hell of a friendly dude off the court. Pitino’s just a villain. I know we’re supposed to root for the BE but I loved it.

Hopefully good bulletin board material, along with Pitino's waving comments.

I almost want us to win more just to give Hurley ammunition to make some kind of sly comment at Pitino's expense.
I just want Hurley to look straight into the camera on an interview and say "Thanks Rick, we'll take it from here!"

Couldn’t agree more. I never met Cal but my good friends old man golfed w him once down at the jersey shore. The day started w him not liking Cal much from what he saw on tv. It ended w him absolutely loving him. Fast fwd a few years and my friends Dad saw Cal at some sort of sports banquet. Thinking he would have to remind Cal of the day they golfed, it was the opposite. The moment Cal saw him he went staright to him, “Hey Jim, how’s the golf game”. My friends dad was floored. Cal is that type of guy. Pitino is the opposite. He plays the salesman role fine when things are going well like most of this year. The moment that tide turns, and it always does w him, Slick Rick’s true colors come out.

Awesome season slick Ricky……best season in 40 years results in a first weekend exit

So how long will it take until he parachutes out of that hell hole??
With Ripole backing him and de facto free agency in college basketball? Not anytime soon.

I was at the 6 games in Providence and enjoyed seeing Self, Calipari and Pitino. They’re all legendary coaches. Cal and Pitino add an element of entertainment which I enjoy.

St. John’s sometimes has trouble shooting the ball. Yesterday was one of those days. After Rick’s comments, I’d love to win today and have UConn be the only BE team in the Sweet 16. That would be tremendous. Let’s get it done.

I give RP credit. Putting a team together the way he did, and coaching them up enough to win the Big East season and tournament was a helluva feat. Everyone knew that shooting was St. John's achilles heel, but they were able to win in spite of that, through hustle and determination. It was one of the greatest single season coaching jobs in BE history, although it was aided by a transfer portal. I'm a fan, and admirer, of great coaches in any sport, accomplishing what he did, at a school that's not exactly a recruiting magnet, and at the age of 72 earns my applause.

Eh, Pitino's woof was all in fun. Now we gotta hear about Cal being back all week. Makes me want to stick a spindle* in my ear.

Love this whole post. What a tool Slick Rick is. He is a great coach, absolutely. But can’t root for him or his team - especially after his waive bye to UConn comment. St John’s the school is basking in the glory he brought them this year / but did they sell their souls? I think he’s had just a couple of sex scandals? Nothing for a catholic university though. Pitino should have said we’ll see UConn in the regional final since we are big east brothers. Hurley is a much better representative of the conference.

His past is just that, the school sold their soul to hire him, and he did a great job for them.

We should be focused on the longer term implications of the Big East champion being embarrassed by a lower level SEC school in the feature game of the afternoon rather than than rooting against that Big East team just because we don't like the little jerk that coaches them.

Engaging in short term thinking is what has UConn in a basketball league in a football world.

And this was the best St. John's team I've seen in a decade. They also were the best team in the BE, winning the Conference Title. I will add that Cal had his number every year when they played kentucky.

Just saying Pitino not winning with the best BE team he's ever fielded is a downgrade on his legacy.

Hell, even Ollie did more with less.
You are bugging if you think this St Johns team was on par with his best Louisville teams in the BE

Good story. Calipari seems like a likable guy where Pitino would slice you up while smiling.

The next step for the Red Storm isn't just about finding more outside shooting. It's about raising the money to attract the talent Pitino needs to take the next step in 2025-26.

If UConn somehow wins today, Hurley has to say something how we will charter out of Laguardia, maybe stop by St. John's and waive at them on way to a regional
