My only fear is that there might be potential recruits reading this crap and wondering why they would want to walk into this hornet's nest when there are better, more positive fan bases out there who actually support their football program. After reading the Boneyard for a week outsiders must think that 3/4ths of the fan base are down on the program. Who would want to be a part of that?

Out of the top 10 threads at the time I write this, IN THE FOOTBALL SECTION OF THE BONEYARD, 3 are about the Te'o scandal, one about the Armstrong scandal, a couple hate rants and only TWO about UConn football. Sad, real sad.

Hey look, I appreciate your optimism and positive outlook. And I hear you on the recruits reading this. But you sound foolish asking people to ignore reality, purchase a one way ticket to fantasyland, and pretend all is well. It is what it is. People are going to be upset. If you don't like it here, there are options. But the reality of the situation is that our athletics program, and football in particular, are in a sad state right now. How are folks supposed to ignore that? If you want to avoid the reality of the situation, start a thread on something pertaining to our roster, coaching, whatever. But trying to sell this sandwich of a conference as a corned beef reuben is just ridiculous. Stop lecturing people about talking about reality. It's a little much.

If she was talking about Blauds, then I immediately take back my previous comment. It might have helped if she clarified it, because it seems that more than a few Boneyarders felt she was talking about us...
Oh course more that a few Boneyarders are delusional paranoids and who believe everytime the waitress walks by without refilling their coffee it's because Emmert hates UConn.

I know, posts about other subjects during the offseason by an active and engaged fanbase is exactly the reason why we don't get top recruits. Thanks for pointing that out.

Weren't there a few people advocating that she just not say anything until we have some real news? This is why.

She is the President of the University. She shouldn't be out there doing Joe D's show as a fill in for Kevin Ollie. If that was really why she was there, then that is ridiculous and whoever is advising her is doing a terrible job.

Warde should be on the radio, not her. Calhoun should be on the radio. Not her. She should be above the fray, away from the clamor. Instead she is right there in it and making it worse, not better. She is not playing her role very well.

Whether we like it or agree with her approach, I think Susan is trying to use the press to shape public opinion. That's better than the clueless/comatose approach of her predecessors.

Take a closer look at that cartoon. I suspect that she understands that impact that athletics has on alumni engagement. Like her or not, I think the fact that she is active and engaged (the Louisville debacle notwithstanding) speaks well of her.

She should. But she doesn't have to be the one to do it. She has people that can shape the opinion, while she sets the strategy, Warde and Co. get to execute it.

I completely agree. She was beyond awful. I was embarrassed as a UConn alumnus to hear the President of the University sound so completely clueless. She referred to Memphis as a legendary program or some such thing...her favorite sports are ones UConn does offer...Memphis and Temple and Houston are "great schools" fans are uspset not because we're headed to a lousy conference but because we won't be playign Syracuse any more...I get that she isn't going to refer to some of our new conference mates as glorified comminity colleges or say well, Memphis will always be pretty good since you get get a plant admitted if you want to. But come on. Send Warde Manuel. He can legitimately make the case for their athletics, argue that they are committed to making this big time. Talk about the commitment they made in Dallas. Or Calhoun. he can reassure folks about the basketball program. She was simply embarrassing. Two me 2 things were pretty clear form this. First, she doesn't really know much about athletics. She can only speak in platitudes about it. And second, the only reason it shows up on her priorities at all is because it must. But it isn't high and she doesn't much care about it. And maybe a 3rd thing...I get more and more of an impression that she is a micro manager, even of things she doesn't completely get.

Unless she doesn't trust Manual. I haven't listened to it yet. I'll try to give it a shot over the weekend.

The fact that a career academician understands the importance and integral role that athletics plays in a university is net plus. Many view it at best as a necessary evil and at worst with open hostility. These are tough times. I think that Suzy is moving the university in the right direction. Again, maybe she was really bad and when (if) I listen to it I’ll have a different opinion.

I don't think it's so much ignoring it as spending all day every day talking about it. Dwelling on it. Swimming in it.

There's a difference between ignoring reality and intentionally not dousing yourself in nonstop pessimism. Just because things are tty doesn't mean you need to have a parade celebrating the fact.

You're not wrong. But if it gets to be too much, just take a break for a while. I just did that over the holidays. Spent 2 weeks BY free. Missed it and came back.

My only point.........if you want to talk optimistically, start a thread and filter out the nonsense. Don't read or respond to the negative stuff. And if it's too much for you, then leave. I just hate when people lecture others all the time about what to write, how to write it, etc. We all have differing opinions. It's a message board. There's good and bad posters. Deal with it or get lost.

Or a pissing contest between who can make the situation sound the *tiest. Everybody on this board knows it's a real *ty situation, but it does get tiring hearing one or another BYer stand on the soap box and proclaim they're the only ones with privileged insider information that the mountain of * is ten times higher than what the last person said.

But it's also a community we all belong to and have a vested interest in. As others have stated, recruits visit this board. I think it is in the program's best interest for people to stop parading their hatred and pessimism and defeatism on this message board and I am going to continue to do so because it's my belief that it's best for our community and for our program.

I know I can't stop people from being overly negative and it doesn't upset my virtues to have people do so. But I do intend to fight to keep the community from going overboard because I am protective of the community and the program. Just ignoring it isn't an option, at least for me.

I like that she's trying to communicate with fans of UConn athletics, it shows she realizes their importance and wants to be involved.

But why say anything negative? There's no need to call out "hater blogs," named or unnamed. It suggests a thin skin, confirms that some people hate you and will suggest to listeners there may be a reason why you are hated, leads people like HfD to wonder if she sees them as her enemy, and thus sows ill will and distrust. It does no good at all, except to get the most loyal allies to circle the wagons. But she shouldn't be trying to rally her most loyal allies for a last ditch fight, she should be trying to rally the undecideds and casual fans to support UConn athletics. To do that she needed to be positive.
