The SEC was probably stronger than most realize (or want to admit).
Yes the SEC is always so strong that they seldom have to step out of conference to play in early games. There league is so strong that they never have to prove themselves. In fact they should just take the top 4 teams and have them play for the National Championship every year. Only another SEC team could give Alabama a game.

Very good description of an ugly performance by Bama, and a great plan by Clemson. My hat is off to Dabo Swinney. BTW, he went to the same high school my daughters attended, and then to Bama to play football. Looks like he learned a lot there! RTR.

Saw a tweet this morning about Swinney.

Hey now! I know the Pac 12 sucks in football. That doesn't disprove that the SEC is often overrated. The two aren't mutually exclusive.
But maybe an ACC affiliate member ought to point that out vs. a "Oh, does your conference play football" member. Notice, not one UConn fan made any reference to the situation...:D (see the AAC record below)

All kidding aside, not sure I am in line with you on this as when looking at the postseason records
PAC-3-4 (top 4 teams went 2-2)
AAC 2-5 (top 4 teams went 0-4)
ACC 6-5 (top 5 teams went 3-3)
Big10 6-3 (top 5 teams went 3-2)
Big12 3-3 (top 4 teams went 1-3)
SEC 6-7 (top 6 teams went 5-2)

Overall, the SEC with 2 close wins (one possession or less) 4 blow-out wins, 4 close losses, 2 blow-out losses. Alabama has 2 postseason games as the SEC had 12 teams play postseason.

Top 2 teams all year were considered Alabama and Clemson so they made it to the final.
Of the top SEC teams:
Georgia lost by 1 touchdown which, was a bit of a shocker
Florida and LSU both won big with Florida blowing out an undermanned Mich (players sat out game) and LSU put the lid on Central Florida yapping (at least for the time being).
Kentucky beat Penn St and Texas AM won big vs. NC State.

So the top 6 teams in the SEC went 5-2, with Alabama losing in the CFP Championship so not sure that is a compelling argument that they are overrated especially considering the pedestrian level of the rest.

There you go, letting facts get in the way of perfectly misinformed opinions. ;)

The Pac actually won some bowl games, that was overachieving compared to last season!

I must've been mistaken. Final poll has 4 SEC teams in the top 8 and 5 in the top 12. I still don't like the SEC. No poll will change that.

The SEC always starts higher due to reputation and that also affects how far they drop when they beat themselves during conference. The SEC has always been a great football conference, but they have ridden their hype for longer than they deserved too. Strengths change year to year as evidenced by how far down the Pac 12 has fallen in just two years. Yet the SEC hype continues to work for them year after year.

I remember how people were saying that ND was over rated because Clemson destroyed them. Well look what Clemson did to Alabama. Clemson was just in a class by themselves this season. This was evident by what they did to Alabama at the goal line in the second half. Alabama probably was the second best team but they were totally dominated in that game.

Take solace in the fact that in WCBB the PAC 12 is reigning supreme and the SEC is woefully #5 of the P5 schools.

Great points and info. SEC was actually 6-6 in Bowls. 11 of the 14 played in Bowls with Bama playing twice. Arkansas, Tennessee and Ole Miss were the three left out. My Bulldogs were pretty disappointing as 6 pt favorites in the Outback Bowl, but the conference did fine. Not dominating, but solid.

For what it's worth, I thought so much of Clemson before the NC game I went over to one of our recently opened Sportsbooks and placed two bets on them. Fun game to watch.

Great time for the ACC. They have the best football team, and the #1 men's and women's basketball teams.

Kind of how the ACC planned it out when they expanded back in 2004 to become more relevant in football. Of course they thought FSU and Miami would dominate and raise the bar for the rest of the schools and make the conference relevant. This year, the ACC was 3rd of the P5 behind the SEC and Big12.
