Why play half a season PG Prep year to then enroll in college 2nd semester to only practice and likely return following year? (and not declare for NBA draft)

Wouldn't it have been easier to just play a full college year and then evaluated your potential draft stock? Appears to me he just wasted 6 months of his great potential playing a PG year that was unnecessary. Seems like bad direction from his camp.
