Hahahahahahaha

I have posts all over the BY from last offseason and when Scheyer got extended saying Duke would regret it and that he can’t win in a big spot. If he can’t win with this team, then when will he?
He won a whole lot. He just lost that one game.

I love this pouring over the Cooper Flagg box out call for several reasons:

1) people acting like it’s the only (potentially) bad call all game when everyone is ignoring at least 2 OOB calls in the 2nd half that were wrong and both went against Houston (one was also a kicked ball by Duke that then went out of bounds… Duke ball!)… I love how clear cut extra possessions granted to Duke not a big deal but an iffy (and I thought probably bad call) call down the stretch is a crime and cost them the game… but even if it’s a bad call it’s not as gamechanging in and of itself because…

2) people are so utterly clueless when it comes to analytics it drives me mad… the foul put a 62% FT shooter at the line in a 1 and 1 situation down 1 pt and also likely deprived Houston of the last shot (barring an offensive board on a FT miss)… no one with even a rudimentary understanding of expected points per trip for both Houston and then Duke under these specific circumstances would make this call out to be “the game”… fun fact if I’m not mistaken - Todd Golden intentionally has his guys foul in that exact same situation that Flagg fouled in at the end of first halves if other team in 1 and 1 (and fouling a 62% shooter is a plus) because of analytics around expected points for both teams in that spot… he wants the last shot (and yes I undertstand it’s not the exact same thing for various reasons).

The Houston kid was actually using his off-hand to hold Flagg's shorts is part of the reason. You can see it if you're looking and see the effect in the replay from a different angle.

Yeah before this, Flagg had both his hands holding down Roberts arm. And the ball came right there and Roberts couldnt use his arm.

Houston was getting killed on the boards and then they started to string together some stops. Maluach got in foul trouble. Dukes guards were the secondary option which really hurts in March. It was a very odd game to watch because at times Houston looked completely overmatched.
Sampson mentioned in his courtside interview that the team was playing uncharacteristically tight. In a weird way being down double digits might have been the best thing for them. I mean it’s not ideal but a lot of times in those situations you can turn off your brain a bit and just relax and start to play. The pressure of the moment shifts to the team with the lead once the comeback starts.

As much as I dislike Duke, Cooper is the real deal, and it's pretty said that a young kid has to go through something like this. Coach would be a different story. AI can be up.
I get your point but he’s not a poor college kid. He’s an 18yr old professional making many millions. My sympathies for ‘college athletes’ vanished with 7-8 figure NIL.

He made a choice that he valued Coach hugs and frat boy love over Championship culture and NBA development. This shouldn't be a surprise.

I'd take the championship ring and elite coaching myself...but he will always have that "Duke Brotherhood" patch on his letterman jacket at the Duke reunions, so kudos to him.:D
If we give him the benefit of the doubt, he may have had so much confidence in himself and who they were bringing in that he didn't think at all. Just assumed he'd win where ever he went.
No matter, we liked the ending and he may have learned a valuable lesson regarding what's really important. So everybody is a winner.

Very true. Coop now knows first hand that at Duke, it's relationships that are most important. Meanwhile, Houston is going to the Finals.

What makes this Dook loss especially satisfying almost 12 hours later is now listening to all the whining about the foul call.

First off, really?? Dook whining about foul calls???

#2, would never have been in that position without an EPIC choke.

But it’s never about Dook crapping the bed is it? Somehow it HAD to be some external force.

This will NEVER get old
Same thing as 2004; the only reason Duke was ahead was due to the two nickel and dimers against Emeka in the first half, and then K was bitching about every single call down the stretch and blamed the loss on the refs.

I watched Duke’s last possession again and a poster nailed it…Flagg definitely got away with a hook that wasn’t called. So I don’t want to hear any of it from them.

I thought I saw it live last night but was in a bar so wasn't sure. Was definitely a hook.

As an aside - I just watched the "recap" on ESPN of Flagg's season - I pretty much didn't pay attention to his year because I religiously avoid anything Duke - but holy S he is a great player - and for his age? WOW. Thank god he is going to the league...

He is as good as advertised. ESPN had that all queued up for championship pregame show. Darn! Haha.

True here too.
It's a bit deceptive in the still. Roberts has thrown his left arm into Flagg in a perfectly legal way and Flagg is trying to maneuver around him. You can see Flagg's hands are open, not holding him. All of this is just natural contact that happens when contesting a rebound.

Again, it doesn't ultimately matter because that call did not cause Duke to lose.

Great point.

That is what makes the loss that much more satisfying. 3 lottery picks and a once a decade talent and no championship. When Hurley had similar talent it was 2 titles and beating opponents by at least 10

I was watching a segment on ESPN earlier today about all the Mainers who suddenly became Duke fans because of Flagg. I hope they don’t twist an ankle hopping off the bandwagon.
Direct Amtrak Portland to Hartford. Just sayin'.

houston literally had the ball already when the foul was called and duke hadn't been able to stop them down the stretch. the foul did not cost them the game.
