Given where he ended up being selected you could argue that leaving Storrs early may not have beennoptimal, but it clearly wasn't a terrible decision. I do wonder if so many of his high school teammates leaving early influenced his decisions. I could understand him wanting to keep pace with his peers.

Wishing him all the best and will watch him get buckets at the next level.

He was projected to go anywhere from what, 13-20? Roughly? To him, that was worth leaving school. Would he have left if he were projected to go 29, which implies he could’ve fell to the 2nd round? I kinda doubt it.

Still, there’s not much sense in applying hindsight because he made a decision that worked best for him given the facts at the time.

Having said all that, if he had come back and wound up turning in a BEPOY season, that heavily implies the incoming class and roster would’ve made a deep run in the NCAAT. Fringe lottery pick implies what, 12-15? That would’ve been an acceptable outcome.
 
Let's see how Day 2 shakes out - Charlotte has more picks and how many rookies do they want? Might trade Liam and down to get a more established player.

Else Liam should have asked Cooper about food in North Carolina not lobster rolls.

I think if he was told "you are gonna be drafted end of 1st round and it's possible you may fall into the 2nd" he would have seriously considered coming back for another year. But pretty much everyone thought he was solidly #15-25 pick material (except a few 5D-chess playing BY'ers who thought he was mid 2nd round), with still an outside chance of going in the lottery. Pretty much no one had Liam as a 2nd rounder. Unless you expect to be a top 5 pick, if you're told you're pretty much guaranteed middle of 1st round pick, you go.

His end result of going #29 is actually pretty similar to Karaban's projections last year, as he was in that late 1st round/early 2nd round range. Then Alex came back for another season and it didn't go the way he wanted (including getting injured), so now he's gonna be a Husky for a 4th year.

Now that Liam's in the NBA on a guaranteed contract, hopefully he can flourish.
 
Although not the place he (or we) hoped he would go, the fact that he gets a guaranteed contract in the first round means it was a good decision. He'll make way more than he could have earned with NIL, and there's no guarantee coming back a year would have improved his position significantly. Plus there's the injury risk. Plus the delayed year of earning an NBA income is huge, along with the added year of age. The sooner he gets to his second contract, the better.

It was a close call (second round would have been devastating), but in the end Liam is in a good position financially. Charlotte is under new management, so it's unfair to paint them with that old brush. Playing time should be available, so now it's up to Liam to perform and earn his place in the league.

People scoffed at the idea he would go low, when any pair of honest eyes saw it coming. He’s lucky he didn’t fall out of the 1st round. I hope he thrives but I’m not seeing much more than a journeyman on a good day. He just doesn’t have the physicals to hang with NBA super freaks.

He was always a one and done. And now it's done. He will pocket a minimum of five bucks. Probably much much more.

Eventually the dam broke and tears flowed, you could tell he was relieved and excited. Go get em Liam!
 
Liam's response to being drafted to play in the NBA -and achieving one of his life's goals-seemed sincere and mature. Now it's time to get to work and become part of the rotation. Begin building leverage for that second contract. Having Kemba around mentoring him is going to help as well.
 
It was the right decision to go in the first round. I do think if he had stayed, he would've been drafted much higher in next year's draft. But, who knows, right? He's now a multimillionaire who will get to play the game that he loves at the highest level. Hard to call that anything but a huge win.
 
I’m looking up salaries now. Liam gets 2.8 million guaranteed for 2 years so 5.6 million. Based on his performance when that runs out he should be able to get another contract worth 20 million right? But even if bounced from the league he has his 5 million.

Clingan's deal at #7 is literally TWICE as much (4yrs $31.1M). Staying at UConn for an extra $17M seems like a better option IMO

The Hornets have team options for him for years #3 and 4 worth $3M and $5.4M respectively. Unless it's a complete disaster his first 2 years, they'll pick up those options with little hesitancy.

While those amounts are the official rookie pay scale #'s, teams can go +/- 20% of the rookie scale salary numbers.

The injury risk has already been incurred. That's the primary reason he fell to #29 - he got hurt and never really recovered fully.

It's a 4 year deal with two club options. If he's as good as advertised, the options get picked up and the deal is worth $14M

TBH, if he had just shut it down for the season after injuring his ankle he probably ends up going higher than 29th. But he's a competitor and wanted to get back out there to help his team win, even if he wasn't 100%.

yourpost is quite accurate
Additionally, the difference in money between Being draft 20 and 28 is not particularly significant
 
I think we're all circling the same thing in the end.

  • He came in with a lot of press. Lauded instantly as a probable 1 and done.
  • Got off very hot and backed up the press clippings.
  • Got hurt and missed 5 weeks.
  • Never really was the same after that.
  • Had a pretty average (at best) postseason that didn't help his stock.
  • He was slated as 15-20 and dropped quite a bit. Ended up going to a horrible franchise.
Is he getting paid a lot to play basketball? Did he achieve his dream of the NBA? Yes.
Could he have come back, averaged 20+ and helped lead us to a top 5 rank all year? Yes.
Could he have blown his knee out in preseason? Yes.

He obviously did the "right thing" for him and his wallet but it potentially could have turned out better with different choices.

So you’re saying that if he stayed another year, he would be drafted in the eighth slot
maybe if he stayed for four years, he drafted first
 
Congrats to Liam. A great player who never really got to showcase his skills at UConn due to injury. Great late first round pick.

pretty much agree but it’s also very possible he could have a 10 year careeer
Look at Pat M in Milwaukee
with changes in the league low paid players
who can make the rotation have more value
the key will be his ability to shoot the 3 at a high
level
