Not to overstate a minor point but I really love to watch Kelis' two minutes at the end of every game. If she doesn't get major playing time next year I'll be really surprised.
I honestly don't know what to make of Kelis at UConn. We don't get to see in her in practice but in our brief glimpses she appear to be a terrific player. But to date she is a ball-dominant 2 that finds her own offense through individual one-on-one play. To my recollection (spotty at best) UConn hasn't had a player like that.

I assume the hope would be that she can transition into something closer to a PG but that would likely be more as a CG that plays alongside one of KK or K9 (as she does now). Lots of competition for backcourt minutes alongside those two.

Some real positive things in this game. KK was great and in top form. Serah was terrific in the first half (especially to start) and seem to be much more integrated into the UConn way at a key time. Blanca looks to have shaken off the rust. They are going to need all three in top form.

Hopefully tomorrow we get to see Ash and Allie lighting up the scoreboard.

K9 seemed a bit tired (by her standards) in the second half. Hopefully all is well.

We scored 84 points, which is a respectable offensive output, without any single player putting up a big number. Azzi's shot just was off today. Sarah seemed content to let others do the scoring and only took I think 9 shots. Ash really shouldn't be having zero point games.

The D was great as usual. All in all it was a solid win with everyone playing pretty well.

Azzi has the quickest catch and release shot I've seen at UConn and that includes Paige.

SMH as to why in today’s computer & AI world we can’t get a box score. Maybe check with Chris Daily…bet she has all the stats from her game time notes.

.-.
Just a couple things:

  • It was a foul by Serah. She hooked Davis, though she did not throw an elbow to her head. It’s a flagrant because her arm was up by the defender’s head. The injury came about when Davis hit her head on the floor. The refs were right to call it.
  • A couple plays later, Sarah got punched in the face on a rebound. The refs didn’t see it and Geno didn’t ask for a review for an undetected intentional foul. I understand why. A fist to the face is by definition a flagrant 1. A moment later, Sarah airballed a 3 pt attempt. Any connection?
  • A couple moments later, in a scrum for a rebound, Byers hit Sarah with a rolling block to the knees sending both of them to the floor. Again, Geno did not call for a review, though he pulled Sarah from the game soon after. This is the same kind of play Jasmine Bascoe pulled against Paige last season. It’s mainly the result of over enthusiasm, but coaches should caution players against it.
On the whole, the reffing was inconsistent, though perhaps not seriously out of balance between the two teams. It certainly did not impact the outcome of the game. Reffing is difficult and I don’t like to second guess them too much.

The good things I saw, leaving all the griping behind, was how well the rest of the rotation played. Azzi and Sarah were not hitting shots at their peak. Everyone else stepped up. @Tonyc would say this is what champions do. And he’d be right.

Also, I jumped out of my seat when Blanca did a crossover worthy of MoJeff to get to the rim. Blanca never ceases to amaze.

I was at the game and it was a dominant performance all around. Our 2 most efficient and effective players were KK and Serah and they only played 19 and 17 minutes. Georgetown’s players seemed to be both frustrated and intimidated trying to get the ball past midcourt and once they did it was very difficult for them to set up any plays or get off a shot or they would just turn it over. The points off turnovers was 44-3 in our favor and it really was a big difference maker in the game. KK and SS in particular totally discombobulated them in that regard, and Serah was impressive defensively on the interior. While I am not trying to detract from a good performance it must be noted that we were up 69-22 after 3 quarters and got outscored 17-15 in the fourth quarter with most of our starters sitting on the bench for most of it. The Hoyas almost had as many points in the 4th as they scored in the entire game so I don’t share some of the enthusiasm by others about what our bench players did in the last 5 minutes. In a BE tourney quarterfinal it doesn’t really matter I guess but it isn’t particularly helpful in getting us ready for the ultimate goal of a 13th NC to have a let down defensively and offensively in the last 6 minutes nor was it great from a spectator perspective. We played 3 quarters of tenacious high level championship hoops and then it got sloppy on offense and lackluster on defense. Nonetheless, still a very nice dominating win.

But a disturbing portion of of those shots are offline, obvious even before the release. That super quick is great for the gym but in a game situation slowing the preshot mechanics might help. Her shot mechanics are repeatable but shot prep can result in "cold" streaks.

Loved the 1st half of your post but the second half of your post was extremely unnecessarily harsh. So, at times the team gets criticized for how they play in half. Then it’s a qtr. And now it’s 5 minutes from the bench? What next 3? Then 2?

Your comment of not being “particularly helpful” is irrelevant. That unit you're criticizing will never see the floor together in a close game. Apparently you made mention of it, but then you blew right past that comment of “it doesn’t really matter I guess,” then go on to imply this will hinder the team some way to winning a title?

The top 7 scorers were out. The top 6 players were out. Even Geno was very happy how everything went. And Georgetown scored their last 6 points with UCONN playing a Zone. And Gneo has frequently said in the past that he doesn't judge how well his teams are playing in blowouts if the offense is getting its shots. The bench was. They were just missing. Caroline might have forced two shots. Is she to be criticized for taking a bad shot or 2 in a 40 pt blowout at the end of the game?

.-.
No it was a hook foul to begin with. I think they got it right.
A hooking foul for sure. It was high up in the neck area and whether the Georgetown kid ducked or not is probably immaterial. But it definitely wasn't a blow to the head. With the Georgetown kid withering on the floor, I'll score that one a "sympathy Flagrant 1".

I hope the Georgetown kid is OK, she did bounce her head on the court pretty good.

G town to start

Listen up! A great first 11 minutes with H.C. Darnell Haney and
5th year Brianna Scott. Note the "scavenger hunt" task the H.C.
sent his team on, and the pride that Coach Haney has for
his team: "They are ready for the world"..."Impacting the world".
Coach Haney also make a nice comment about Shade:
"the glue"!

We stretched the lead to 79-25. After that, it wasn’t the bench, it was the deep bench. Three players who won’t see meaningful post season minutes. No concerns.

It might have been a prettier game if Geno left the starters in but if Sarah or Azzi were injured playing a game where the team is up 50, Geno would be crucified, probably with good reason. I thought Georgetown was too rough at times so pulling key players was wise

Exactly. There were a few near misses in that game such as Sarah and K9.

I always just report what I see at the game and say my piece and don’t respond but think a short reply is in order here. Was the last part of my post somewhat critical, sure I guess, but it wasn’t extremely harsh. What I said was accurate and imo it’s helpful to try and maintain an aura of invincibility and play UConn basketball a fill 40 minutes come tournament time. And I never said or implied that anything that happened would hinder us from winning a BE or National Championship. My main point was that being there we looked invincible and defensively dominant for 3 quarters and the let up in the 4th and particularly the last 6 minutes was noticeable and obvious. Everyone around me was saying the same thing after we were all just talking about how awesome the team looked and how great it would be to hold them under 30 points and send a message to all that it was now tournament time and the Huskies were clicking on all cylinders. In retrospect I was trying to say and thinking out loud that maybe it would be better to have some of our top 8 in there ( excluding Azzi and Sarah) even at the end so they are used to playing more extended minutes in the 4th quarter when it becomes necessary at some point in the Big Dance. I specifically did not criticize any player directly nor even the team and after reading the other posts and replies I do realize now that maybe the concern about needlessly risking an injury to our starters in the 4th quarter is a good point I hadn’t considered. And finally, sheesh, only on the Boneyard can you be criticized for saying that your team is awesome and dominant but took their foot off the gas when they were up 50 points lol.

This has been discussed quite a bit. See this thread -
Sorry, this is what I don't get. I have read that ONE article ( discussed "quite a bit?). What more discussion exists beyond that single thread? And what does " it was a strategic decision" mean? I guess I am the only fan who doesn't get the response. You cannot tell me that Gandy would look like a fruit loop if you put her on the court. She played the game quite successfully for two seasons in a major New Jersey High School. and she has practiced and trained at UCONN for the better part of a full season. And it remains a " strategic decision" to give her no game experience? Can you please tell me more about? Thanks.

Searching for "Gandy" either in thread titles or posts shows this:

In Geno I trust. If they are trying to preserve this year for a potential red shirt with a potential rule change, then so be it.

This is a game thread and discussion of Gandy doesn’t belong here. @BRS24 linked a long thread not one article
