Some thoughts on the Georgetown game:
  • The Conference Tournament is here. UConn fans should see a tighter rotation and sharper execution as the Huskies ramp up for the Big Dance. I don’t necessarily expect a bunch of blowout wins as opponents improve, they are playing for tournament invitations, seeding and the desire to finish strong, although today’s game was a pretty one-sided beatdown.
  • It feels like each half doesn’t really start for UConn until after the Huskies score their first basket and lock into their full court press, after which it becomes pure hell for UConn’s opponents.
  • Serah may never be a great back to the basket post player, but she does run the court and fill the lane exceptionally well and, unlike many BIGS, she can defend out on the floor.
  • With her mom & dad in attendance, Blanca was clearly trying too hard at first. But she settled down in the 2nd qtr and started to do Blanca things, which were pretty amazing. 😎
  • Allie & Kayleigh are the two best “backup guards” that I’ve seen anywhere in the country. When they sub in for the starters, UConn loses almost nothing at either end of the court! 😁
  • Strange game for both Sarah and Azzi. They certainly made their share of plays. But neither one dominated the game, and that’s probably a very good thing as UConn's balanced scoring doesn't allow opponents to attempt to take away any one player.
  • Georgetown is probably the most physical team in the conference, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But at this point in the season, I’m very happy that UConn got through this game without anyone getting injured.
  • I suppose there are a number of things UConn could have done better today. But it's hard to argue with the Huskies relentless defense that held the Hoyas to 39 points. I'd like to give you Georgetown's shooting percent and the number of turnovers that UConn forced. But the live stats cut out in the 3rd qtr......
  • Jana is not getting a lot of PT. But she's keeping herself ready to play and she's making the PT she does get count. Jana is like an insurance policy that I have to believe is going to pay dividends in the postseason against some of the BIGS that UConn will inevitably face.
  • So is Geno growing a goatee? I guess he’s trying to dispel the idea that he’s getting soft in his old age…🙄
I would like to add that Sareh Williams did not elbow that Georgetown player in the head. She made a spin move ( elbows going right along ) which caused the Georgetown player to lose her balance and fall. Her injury was when the back of her head smacked hard against the court floor. The slo mo replay should have made that obvious to the officials, but they were not about to let that one go. They made up their minds despite the facts. And then they managed to ignore the most blatant foul of the game; that push from behind by a Georgetown player. UCONN is fortunate no one was injured.

I agree with you 💯 percent.

Overall a really solid game. A couple of offensive lulls - but the defense was elite. Not playing for a week, not quite sure what to expect.
  • Serah - 2nd game in a row where she's played really well. Her aggressiveness will be needed
  • KK was a menace
  • Blanca really played well
  • Allie had a solid game
  • Kind of off game for Sarah and Azzi, but great chance for everyone else to step up
  • Kelis showed a lot in her limited minutes
Biggest cheer of the game Carol's 3 late in Q4. Good for her! Loved seeing that! The bench was excited and Gandy went nuts. Can't tell me she's not invested or happy! Just a really good game after a week off. Way to go UConn!!!

BTW on edit, forgot to say, loved Fanta calling UConn the best basketball program in the history of women's college basketball - twice.
Kelsis is one of the best drivers to the basket we shall ever see. But I don't think she has made an outside shot ( or a 10 footer) all season. That doesn't mean she cannot. It is just the case so far ( at least by my observation ). Wonderful to see Caroline hit a three. And can someone tell me why they call Patterson a "red shirt sophomore?" Does she really have that level of eligibility remaining? If so, she might get a chance to show the skills which got her recruited to UCONN. Wouldn't that be great? And she'll probably have a PHD by then.

I’m sorry, but I hate complaining about fouls. Any hit to the head, intentional or not, is a technical. Serah hooked the Georgetown player to make her spin move, which is in itself a foul. Serah’s arm road up the Georgetown player and hit her in the head.

While I agree that the Georgetown player lost her balance, hitting her head on the court, the injury was caused by Serah initially hitting her in the head.

That’s the very definition of a flagrant foul. Because there was no intent by Serah, it was only a flagrant 1, which allowed Serah to remain in the game.

Believe it or not, Ayanna is playing in her second season of her UConn career. She’s been injured the other seasons

Context is important - the Gtown player ducked down, thus putting her head/neck area right in line with Serah’s natural shoulder height.

So tell me why Gandy is not ready to play? I have seen the old story, issued months ago, by coach. But it makes no sense to me. Lots of kids who started basketball at 12 can be respectable by 18. And she starred for two years at a major New Jersey high school. Her team won a county championship, and she averaged 17 points I think. She has been at UCONN since September, participating in all practices, gym work, etc. And she still is not ready for any garbage time? And yet Geno's original press release said her potential is. unlimited. Something in this story makes no sense at all. I mean if she is injured or being red shirted, I can understand. But the is not the story line. No one seems to know anything beyond the original press release from months ago. Help?
This has been discussed quite a bit. See this thread -

I'm glad you said this. Between foul complaints and those who wonder why one kid is scoring, or not scoring, a particular game, it's the way UConn runs the offense. Sure, feed the superstars, but it's game to game who else gets the points, all depending on who the other team is leaving unguarded. One of our other players besides Strong or Azzi can score 2 or 20, it's irrelevant to the final score. The third and fourth high scorers change every game, which is exactly the way a motion offense should be.

Ok. Like I said in my initial post in this thread, I missed Serah's elbow moving up to the player's head. Everything else I did see.
I still haven't figured out how to use Peacock slow-motion on my Xbox.

Besides some offensive lulls (where we were getting open looks but shots weren’t falling), I thought we played with absolute fire energy today. You could tell the Georgetown players were very frustrated out on the floor.

Loved seeing Ducharme’s 3!

It did not look like Serah did anything to me on her technical foul. I was sitting right there and happened to be taking a video of it, so I’ve watched it a few times now.

The Georgetown player ducked down because Serah hooked her around the back and her arm levered up by her head. The hook itself is a foul. The fact that it road up to her head and she lost her balance, falling on the floor makes it a flagrant foul.

Man I hate to get involved in these discussions about what was and was not a foul. It was a foul by Serah that was correctly determined to be a flagrant foul.

I linked a thread with that discussion when you posted the same question two days ago. This is a game thread

I am disappointed that the stats mostly didn’t work the whole game.

On another note, I thought the commentary was dire today. They refused to provide play by play for the action taking place on the court. Instead they recited stories that regular viewers have heard countless times before. Really bad!
Yes, those announcers are just terrible!

Was there today; great seeing Williams get off to a quick start right off the bat. Game felt disjointed but another blow out win in a BE quarterfinal game. Still waiting for the Peacock replay to pop up. What's up with that??

OK, it looks like I blamed Peacock for the Mohegan Sun arena's stats problem. But they still should have people keeping stats individually;
there are programs that run offline that let you do that.

Not to overstate a minor point but I really love to watch Kelis' two minutes at the end of every game. If she doesn't get major playing time next year I'll be really surprised.
I honestly don't know what to make of Kelis at UConn. We don't get to see in her in practice but in our brief glimpses she appear to be a terrific player. But to date she is a ball-dominant 2 that finds her own offense through individual one-on-one play. To my recollection (spotty at best) UConn hasn't had a player like that.

I assume the hope would be that she can transition into something closer to a PG but that would likely be more as a CG that plays alongside one of KK or K9 (as she does now). Lots of competition for backcourt minutes alongside those two.

Some real positive things in this game. KK was great and in top form. Serah was terrific in the first half (especially to start) and seem to be much more integrated into the UConn way at a key time. Blanca looks to have shaken off the rust. They are going to need all three in top form.

Hopefully tomorrow we get to see Ash and Allie lighting up the scoreboard.

K9 seemed a bit tired (by her standards) in the second half. Hopefully all is well.

We scored 84 points, which is a respectable offensive output, without any single player putting up a big number. Azzi's shot just was off today. Sarah seemed content to let others do the scoring and only took I think 9 shots. Ash really shouldn't be having zero point games.

The D was great as usual. All in all it was a solid win with everyone playing pretty well.

Azzi has the quickest catch and release shot I've seen at UConn and that includes Paige.

SMH as to why in today’s computer & AI world we can’t get a box score. Maybe check with Chris Daily…bet she has all the stats from her game time notes.

Just a couple things:

  • It was a foul by Serah. She hooked Davis, though she did not throw an elbow to her head. It’s a flagrant because her arm was up by the defender’s head. The injury came about when Davis hit her head on the floor. The refs were right to call it.
  • A couple plays later, Sarah got punched in the face on a rebound. The refs didn’t see it and Geno didn’t ask for a review for an undetected intentional foul. I understand why. A fist to the face is by definition a flagrant 1. A moment later, Sarah airballed a 3 pt attempt. Any connection?
  • A couple moments later, in a scrum for a rebound, Byers hit Sarah with a rolling block to the knees sending both of them to the floor. Again, Geno did not call for a review, though he pulled Sarah from the game soon after. This is the same kind of play Jasmine Bascoe pulled against Paige last season. It’s mainly the result of over enthusiasm, but coaches should caution players against it.
On the whole, the reffing was inconsistent, though perhaps not seriously out of balance between the two teams. It certainly did not impact the outcome of the game. Reffing is difficult and I don’t like to second guess them too much.

The good things I saw, leaving all the griping behind, was how well the rest of the rotation played. Azzi and Sarah were not hitting shots at their peak. Everyone else stepped up. @Tonyc would say this is what champions do. And he’d be right.

Also, I jumped out of my seat when Blanca did a crossover worthy of MoJeff to get to the rim. Blanca never ceases to amaze.

I was at the game and it was a dominant performance all around. Our 2 most efficient and effective players were KK and Serah and they only played 19 and 17 minutes. Georgetown’s players seemed to be both frustrated and intimidated trying to get the ball past midcourt and once they did it was very difficult for them to set up any plays or get off a shot or they would just turn it over. The points off turnovers was 44-3 in our favor and it really was a big difference maker in the game. KK and SS in particular totally discombobulated them in that regard, and Serah was impressive defensively on the interior. While I am not trying to detract from a good performance it must be noted that we were up 69-22 after 3 quarters and got outscored 17-15 in the fourth quarter with most of our starters sitting on the bench for most of it. The Hoyas almost had as many points in the 4th as they scored in the entire game so I don’t share some of the enthusiasm by others about what our bench players did in the last 5 minutes. In a BE tourney quarterfinal it doesn’t really matter I guess but it isn’t particularly helpful in getting us ready for the ultimate goal of a 13th NC to have a let down defensively and offensively in the last 6 minutes nor was it great from a spectator perspective. We played 3 quarters of tenacious high level championship hoops and then it got sloppy on offense and lackluster on defense. Nonetheless, still a very nice dominating win.

But a disturbing portion of of those shots are offline, obvious even before the release. That super quick is great for the gym but in a game situation slowing the preshot mechanics might help. Her shot mechanics are repeatable but shot prep can result in "cold" streaks.
