One more regular season game and then on to the Big East Tournament. Seems to me like the last few weeks of the season have been a grind. With the chance to take a break and refocus, I think the team will go into the BE and NCAA tournaments with much more energy and sharp performances. If you look around at other games, many other teams out there aren't playing at peak performance right now either.

K9 does seem the superior distributor, which will be a bigger factor when the offense isn't just Sarah and Azzi playing off each other.

I like that they both bring different elements to the position, though. It allows Geno to change the look with only a like-for-like type (PG for PG) and not going big or small or something more dramatic.

Superior?? KK 51 more assists with just 1 more turnover. KK also has 10 less personal fouls. And almost double the steals. Some are really taking KK for granted.

Our bigs need to rebound better and play more aggressive with shots around the hoop. They pass up a lot of open shooting opportunities that might put them on the line as well. They also need to keep the ball higher but mostly take it down when quick guards can steal or tie it up. This is late in the season for continued questionable play from our centers.
The 4th quarter was sloppy with too much forced passing when the shooting opportunity was clear.

When our quick team is on the court we come up with many tie-ups and much better flow. Love the impressive squaring up and fast releases of Azzie and Sarah. Ash looked for her shot with good success. We need a more consistent third scorer as that need isn't being met from our centers. Even when they receive a pass in good position, they have trouble scoring. Geno's facial expressions with some of our center's efforts appears strained when the cameras pan to him.
I don't think it has to be 1 player. We have gotten a few times this year, besides Fudd and Strong, 2-3 double digit scorers. But they tend to be different players, game to game. As long as we can get 2-3 in double digits after Fudd and Strong...we should be fine.

The teams immediately behind UConn are. UCLA, SC, Texas, and Vanderbilt are playing really well offensively. They all look good and will be hard to beat.

.-.
Azzi certainly is playing like she knows she has limited time left at UConn. It seemed to me that Sarah was deferring her offensive opportunities to others. That wont work against the non Big East teams. Very pedestrian game last night against a very inferior opponent.

It is such a long season.

Some thoughts on the Georgetown game:
  • The win today over Georgetown is UConn’s 30th this season, extending the Huskies all-time record of 30-win seasons to 29, twelve ahead of 2nd place TN’s 17.
  • Georgetown came out executing their offense well and knocking down 3’s, trailing only 21-20 after the 1st qtr. In the 2nd qtr UConn ramped up their defense, outscoring the Hoyas 27-5….Game over.
  • Blanca’s quickness and ability to pressure the ball on defense is a game changer whenever she’s on the court, usually defending an overmatched forward.
  • I know it’s never been UConn’s way, but I wonder what it would look like if the Huskies ran their offense to get 20-25 shots each, per game, for both Sarah & Azzi? 🧐
  • UConn does as good a job as any team in the country of taking advantage of what I would refer to as “opportunity double-teams” wherever and whenever they present themselves on the court. It felt like the Huskies forced a dozen tie-ups today.
  • I'm not sure what exactly UConn is trying to accomplish with their "twin towers" having Serah & Jana on the court together. It's certainly not the same as Steph & Stewie. 😬
  • A quick comment on the NPOY. Blakes and Vandy are locked in a battle with Bama where she will play 35+ minutes and put up 25+ pts. Sarah played 23 minutes, scored 13 pts on 5/10 shooting with 11 rebounds, 7 assists, 0 turnovers, 1 steal & 1 block. Who are you going to vote for?
  • In his pregame presser, Geno had very good things to say about where the team is right now, specifically regarding the team’s health. Nothing is as important, as the Huskies get ready for the postseason, then having a deep, talented and healthy roster.
  • I’ll be taking a bite out of the Big Apple on Sunday to watch UConn & St Johns at MSG. I’ll thank another BY in advance for initiating the postgame thread.
Against teams with very big front lines in the NCAA Tournament (ex: UCLA) Geno is going to need to go BIG at times (Sarah, Serah, & Jana) with Azzi and Blanca in the backcourt, to effectively deal with size matchups (Better to work out the kinks against teams like Georgetown and early in the Big East Tournament than far into the NCAA Tournament)

What I got from this game is that Azzi and Sarah can put away a game in two quarters, and they can do it because of the defensive support they get from KK Ash Kayleigh Serah Blanca Allie and Jana. In this game, Ash Blanca and Kayleigh helped slam the door shut on the offensive end, and that is key, and sometimes it's Allie or KK who do this. But it's the defense they provide that makes so much possible.

When I think of the tournament and what can be possible, I draw confidence from Sarah and Azzi's steadiness, but also from the everyday defensive work this entire team consistently provides. They never have an off-day on defense. And that defense is so in sync with itself that it builds the complete team chemistry. And the sign of this is when Geno clears the bench, the first thing that suffers is the defense -- it's still pretty good, but the hard edge disappears For example, Kelis still dazzles with slashes to the rim, but she also doesn't fight through screens and then the closeouts are late. She'll get the hang of this by next season, I suspect, but the difference is still visible.

One side note: Candace in the halftime show was both classy and working at a much higher level than the rest of the team. The side-eye she shot them when they tried to assess Sarah was classic, as well as her cool response to some foolish teasing about the LSU-Tenn game.

The only time you will see Sarah, Serah, Jana, Azzi & Blanca on the court together is during warmups. Last season was very much a precursor for this season. UConn destroyed UCLA by going small, forcing Betts and other UCLA forwards to defend Sarah, Paige, Azzi and others out on the court, which effectively neutralized their size and emphasized their lack of athleticism.

Give it your best shot.
Read formlahaut's post to you. Also, Sarah and Azzi were out of the game too. Sarah, the Nat'l probable POY, played just 23 minutes. Also, other players have to practice pressing too. As Geno said in regard to Blanca which applies then to all players including "team pressure" when for example a team presses, he stated in the postgame, around 1:40 of the presser that no matter how many drills you do it isn't the same ass doing it in the game. While he was talking about Blanca specifically, that comment he made was also in general. If you are only going to use pressure when the game is decided then all the bench players lose out on working on this because they will only play it so little. The team and bench players and the starters who don't/won't play big minutes need the minutes. It shouldn't all and/or mostly be about the other team's feelings. the coaching staff should be more worried about the other team? The team wants to press. Now because they are too good the whole team should suffer? Geno took out his two superstars that are head-and-shoulders above the others. He needs to be even more sympathetic along with not having his bench players and 3rd/4th/5th starters a chance to work on their game in the style UCONN wants to play which is press, press, press? How much better is the team getting then? They won’t reach their potential, right?

By the way, why do you hate Geno so much? Is it because you hate his substition policy and such as things like this you think he is awful because you feel it’s nothing other than running up the score? Instead you want see Ganddy get her 5 minutes? Then maybe we can criticize Geno for only giving her 5 minutes because some might say you can’t get better by only playing 5 minutes?

Candace is a very talented commentator. Substantive information, well presented.

No he doesn;'t. The other teams aren't pros. He'll do just like he did last year. Listen to his postagme when someone brought up Serah and Jana in-- he wasn't impressed into talking much about it other that say his other players needed rest. UCONN wants other teams to react to them. Not them to react to others.

I don’t want to like Candace, but I’m really growing to.

One thing about the game: I’ve complained a couple of times about Serah not coming to meet passes. Well last night, late third or fourth quarter, Ashlynn passed the ball right to Serah. The ball hit her right in the hands and just bounced off. Serah was in the high post and Ash was maybe ten feet away, almost certainly doing exactly what she was supposed to do, passing the ball to the high post. SMH

I will take the heat on this, but Blanca should be starting over Serah. Also, Jana should be the first big off the bench.
Wish KK would look for her shot more.
Another great win.
Jana is still too slow to react once she receives the ball. Often, this results in stopped ball movement and a tie-up. She needs to either go to the basket or pass it to an outlet. But she needs to know much quicker, what her options are.

Come on, KK may not have had one of her better offensive performances but she still had 4 assists (could have been 8 easily but several perfect dishes were not converted) and no turnovers and was the major disruptor on defense as usual. Nothing against Kaleigh but to suggest she is a better passer or distributor or that KK’s job as lead point guard or starter is in jeopardy to her or anyone else as has been suggested at least twice now is unfathomable. She is the best all around point guard in the country imo and let’s not forget that she has proven herself already in the last 2 ncaa tournaments where she excelled in the highest level pressure games.
She is not better than Harmond,Miles or for that matter Hildago..All three of them are not only great defensive players but score at a high level and have 6.7,6.7 and 5.4 assists per game while KK has 4.8 per game.I think KK is really good but not in their class

I wish for this "grind" every year. No losses. No games under 5 or 10.

And as we heard from Geno in the postgame how its takes time for someone like Blanca to come back. We can all see how terrific she is. ANd we saw Geno have to sit Sarah one entire game, then when she is back we read how he makes mention that she wasn't practicing either even though playing in some games. As if these things don't matter when we play other Big East Teams. Sometimes it doesn't the team just plays super anyway. But again Geno even mentioned after Marq that missing Blanca had finally caught up to them. Is the injury/sickness grind is what you are speaking of? Other than that this team is 30-0 and demolishing everyone when sick-free/healthy-free other than 1 or 2 games -- which they won.

The complaints about this team are nothing more than howling at the moon - grossly unwarranted. From the E8 game and onward there will be tough opponents. The other teams have scholarship players too. Last night Sarah only played 23 minutes and the game was already locked up at halftime from a team hitting lots of 3's early in which the game plan apperared to let them shoot from there.

Maybe we start slow in games because our best lineup isn’t one with Serah Williams? and it’s just that simple.
Other than the statistics saying the exact opposite, sure, makes sense.

TBH, they both do that. Jana seems to be a better rebounder but she is also slower and far less athletic. On Jana's best day and Serah's worst, they are even. On most days, Serah is better. I would say our best 5 had Blanca in for Serah but not now. Blanca's game has suffered a lot from the long layoff.

We are NOT the best team in the country right now. We might not even be second.

Someone illuminate me. With 6 minutes left and up 30 points they're still in full court pressure defense. How come?
Because most, if not all of the starters on the bench. Does that give you a clue?
The non-core group needs to work on defense and the only time they are on the court to work on it is in the 4th Qtr

They certainly all are quite impressive and will present formidable foes. Me thinks going forward the minutes will be very sparce for some on the bench. Expect Azzi, Sarah, and Ashlyn, Blanca getting 30 plus, KK and K9 splitting the 40, and Allie, Serah, and Jana filling in the rest - depending upon matchups and defense.

I think we have two that are pretty reliable for getting double digits. Between Blanca and Ash I think 25, or close to it, is a reasonable expectation. While Allie and K9 are streaky and therefore can't be counted on every game, I do think that pair can produce 10-12 / game with KK , SW and JEA chipping in with 6-10
Add in the 40-45 we should get from our 2 NPOY candidates and we are right at 80-85 a game and with our defense that should result in number 13.
