Some thoughts on the Georgetown game:
  • Today’s game was moved from Georgetown’s on campus arena to CareFirst Arena in downtown DC, which has an additional 2,000+ seats, all of which, apparently, were occupied by Azzi’s friends and family. 😁
  • Another furious start by the Huskies tonight scoring the first 14 points, forcing 6 turnovers while holding the Hoyas to 0/6 from the floor before they finally hit their first basket.
  • Clearly, there was a lid on the basket during much of the game for the Huskies from the arc. While I’m not really worried about UConn’s ability to knock down 3-pt shots, it is a bit frustrating to see everybody shooting bricks at the same time.
  • Really good to see Jana back on the court. When Georgetown started to get physical with Sarah in the 2nd qtr, it was no coincidence that Geno subbed in Jana, a.k.a. THE ENFORCER.
  • So how’s this for a stat line for Sarah: 21 pts on 8/9 shooting (3/4 from the arc & 2/2 FT), 4 rbs, 3 ast, 3 stl………..in the first half 😮 If Sarah continues to shoot the ball like she has for the rest of the season, she will be the first player in history to have a 60/40/90 season.
  • Azzi’s last homecoming to the DMV with UConn WBB and, while it wasn’t her best shooting game, she really had a very nice all-around game with 19 pts, 6 rbs, 5 Ast, 2 stl & 1 blk.
  • DEFENSE - Lead by Ash with 5 steals, UConn managed 19 steals for the game, forcing 28 Georgetown turnovers while holding the Hoyas to 1/17 from the arc.
  • Mercifully, Geno pulled off the press in the 2nd half, which put something of a damper on UConn’s offense. In the 3rd qtr, UConn outscored Georgetown 9 to 8. 🤯
  • Public Service Announcement for those who may not be aware. The next game against Seton Hall has been moved up from Sunday to Saturday at noon due to the forecast winter snowstorm on Sunday.

  • Georgetown was coming off a road win against Marquette. The Huskies had an off night from 3 but still handled an aggressive Hoya team fairly easily
  • UConn missed two 2 point shots in the first half. Rare to see that.
  • The announcers have run out of adjectives to describe Sarah’s play. Other than some sloppy turnovers, she had another terrific all around game.
  • Georgetown turned it over 18 times in the first half, 28 for the game. They seemed more rattled than many trying to handle the pressure.
  • Georgetown’s 3-2 bothered the Huskies enough that Geno kept Sarah and Azzi longer in the fourth than normal. The zone took away getting the ball to the high post. It took UConn a bit to adjust.
  • Azzi had an off night from 3 but on her behalf she seems to have a lot of balls go in and out.
  • Enough issues to work out between now and Saturday. Hope all involved have safe travels.

I'm not one to complain about the refs, but our games that are blowouts are not officiated fairly. The refs call the game based on the score, they don't call the game based on the play. There is no way a team like Georgetown, who plays as physically and borderline recklessly as they do, only fouled 11 times.

Jana played all of four minutes and was subbed out for Patterson. Not really enforcing.

Nice first half. The team's intensity seemed to dip in the second. Relatedly, and I admit I haven't checked the stats, but the refs appeared to call the game more closely against both sides in the third and fourth quarters. Made for a choppier game.

That's got to be the ugliest second half on offense that we have seen in a while.
And how many players got into foul trouble? Seemed really weird.
But it still was a dominate win against a feisty Hoya team regardless of a pretty cold shooting night.

edit: when I posted this I didn't realize that we scored 23 points in the 4th quarter. That's not too shabby.

Missed the third quarter and I guess I didn't miss much. We had some sloppiness with the ball, but defensively really compensated. I was annoyed by some Georgetown defense that looked like I don't care if I hurt somebody. Luckily no injuries. For me the least fun watch of the year. Too much no purpose passing on offense for me. One thing I have failed to comment on before: this team has great composure; its like watching a pro squad go about its business.

Thank you! I wanted to post the same feeling...

Hard to watch at times, I wonder if all the energy they put into the Notre Dame game took it toll...Sarah Strong continues to look like the Player of the Year, until she turns the ball over on a bad pass.
Really good to see Jana playing again. Hardly anyone could hit a 3 pointer, especially Azzi in this game, but you know her shooting is one of the best, she always comes back eventually.

If Uconn had to get a so-so game out of the way, this was the team to play. I won't say anything negative about the team or players, Just thank God we have SARAH. Now to Seton Hall. GO HUSKIES!!!!!!
Well, that is sort of negative. But you're right. I've wondered at times what this team would look like without Sarah.

Not sure what there is left to say about this team!

Held G’Town to 5% 3PT! 19 steals! 27 fast break points!

Crazy numbers. I know it’s Georgetown and not a top 5 team, but still. Plus lots of valuable minutes once again for our bench players tonight.

Good game for Geno to keep shaping the team. They won comfortably but there were long stretches where collectively, and in some cases individually, they did not play well. I thought they over passed at times during the game, and that is a fine line to walk between making the extra pass and being aggressive with the ball. Especially with a team that shares the ball as much as they do.

Happy for Ayanna, she did well with the minutes she played.
Great to see Jana back!

On to the next one!

UConn continues to struggle against zone defenses........if nothing else, this was a good game to work on that......I give credit to Georgetown for keeping their composure in the first quarter and playing solid defense throughout the game........I have a feeling Seton Hall is going to be the unfortunate target of an angry UConn team after Geno lets them have it upon review of this messy game........

The first half was excellent except for outside shooting. The second half was choppy due to mental lapses and strange officiating. I don't think this team ever looks past the current opponent to the next one, but it sure seemed that their heads were not in the game in the second half, esp when KK was out.

I’m not excusing sloppiness, but I do think that it’s probably hard to stay “locked in” mentally when the game is already over at halftime. It happens.
