Morgan might be our second best rebounder and she’s only a freshman.

Once Aubrey comes back, our slow defensive starts will come to an end. Geno puts her and KK in off the bench, and they’re forcing the game to be played to our speed. Not to mention we get another good rebounder back.

I think we’re doing okay without PB on the court for the most part, especially now that Azzi is getting her rhythm back. 60% from 3 in both 20 point games she’s had.

While I have never tracked this before, noticed only one UConn player, Sarah, shot foul shots the entire game. Looking back to other games, appears UConn typically is fouled less. Seems like UConn is driving to the basket more than in the past which would normally create more fouls.
There is a pretty good reason we don't get to the line much. On the whole when we do drive to the hoop, we are more likely to make an acrobatic move to avoid a defender and score, rather than just run into the defender and force a call. This includes Paige, Azzi, Ash and KK.

I have no issue with this, and Geno also likes a clean fast moving game, but it is the reason we are not at the line much.

Sarah is a big kid, she uses her body and is a pro at drawing fouls.

Paige gets an occasional call, but she's often getting absolutely clobbered with nothing called.

JuJu Watkins is big like Sarah too, and really just plows into people, and still gets off a quality shot! When bodies go flying there is always a call. 70% for JuJu and 30% a charge. Tie goes to the offense.

Some times refs make mistakes. In this case the review of a potential flagrant foul by Jana got the common foul overturned. What I liked is that Jana made one hell of a play, and I wouldn’t have known that unless the ref blew the whistle.
It also highlights what I've been saying...Jana get's a crappy whistle for phantom fouls or incidental brushes that get overlooked when it comes to other bigs. Hard to consistently play with confidence with that albatross hanging on your neck.

I posted this in the Xavier Postgame thread...I purposely watched Jana at the beginning of the 2nd half and she was getting guarded very aggressively and the ref whistles were silent. If she had been anything close to that behavior on defense, she would have been rung up every time. The downfall for Jana being our big.

A couple of observations from the game: (1) Seemed like Georgetown ran out of gas in the 2nd period, score would indicate same. (2) Along these same lines, kudos to our players conditioning, stamina and grit, especially KK, Ash and Morgan. (3) In watching Azzi, it appears that her shooting improves in direct relation to her fitness, especially with the legs. As you watch her improve, note the time it has taken, and will continue to take for her to come back 100%. We should expect to see the same with Aubrey and hope her return to form will be a bit quicker, a good probability since she is noteworthy as a defender, disrupter, not so much as a scorer.

The best thing to come from these past two games was Azzi being assertive offensively. Against Georgetown she again had an efficient day from the field, and has found her 3 point touch. It bodes well for Paige’s return. The success of this team offensively will depend on the 3 scoring attack of Paige, Sarah, and Azzi.

Happy to see Chen score some baskets, and KK to continue playing well. Kk also hit a 3, now three games in a row I believe. They’re going to split time at the 1, so as long as both are being productive we’ll be good.

I think you’re confirming my point.
I wouldn’t put too much stock on messages being sent on minutes distribution on this 16th game, against a previously-beaten opponent, showing some spunk and uncharacteristic hot shooting, on the road, with Paige and Ice out.

As HuskyNan’s boxscores show:
  • Kaitlyn and KK had equal 22 minutes each;
  • Jana and Morgan had 18 minutes and 22 minutes each;
  • Azzi, Sarah and Ash had the most minutes (30+ minutes each), mimicking a Big 3 minutes distribution against a scrappy opponent giving this young UConn more experience in dealing with tough situations that Geno simulates in practice;
  • Allie and Q got early minutes.
In short, Geno — who has just a 16-game bandwidth in a 31-game season — is still in a seasoning and finding-out mode.

I suspect re: Jana:
  • The post and point guard positions are tiring; to be at their best, Jana, Ice, KK, and Kaitlyn will be played by Geno at around 20 minutes per game;
  • Of course, game situations and whether a player is “on” or “off” on a game, will dictate whether normal minutes for a player will be allocated to others;
  • Geno remarked that sometimes he has to play “small ball” because the opponent is playing well that way;
  • Morgan is what Geno refers to as a basketball player; that is why he seems to always find her significant minutes;
  • Game-film enabled practices is a steady diet for Jana at this point; Geno doesn’t need 30 minutes of game time for Jana; other young players need those minutes too.

Team is definitely progressing, Yes, ICE was ill and did not make the trip. I don't know what to make of Q. Her prime asset ( I think ) was her 3 point shot. But that has deserted her. She never makes one now. So she churns around and tries to do other stuff. The game has not slowed down for her. I keep hoping the best player she can be will emerge. Everything else you said was right on. I hope both Morgan and Allie get a lot more court time. But the truth is, once Paige returns, and ICE is healthy, and Aubrey returns, that won't happen. We don't want any injuries. That is not the way to pro
Q works so hard to try to impress. The only way you improve is on the court. She's Makes things happen in her limited time. Let her play Let her loose.
vide court time.

I liked what we got from Allie and Morgan this game. KK’s game has been very good the last 3 games. Q is struggling, but I hope the asst. coaches can help her develop.
In what way has Q struggled. Just curious

I like Q and she’s trying really hard. But as someone who prides herself on her shooting, she’s last on the team at 30/18/33. In addition, on a team that leads the nation in A/TO ratio with a remarkable 2.02, Q is last on the team at 0.3 A/TO.

Q is also last in mpg at 7.5. While I fully understand that the only way to truly improve is to get more PT, I need to point out that Allie used to be last in mpg. But Allie forced Geno to give her more PT by her performance on the court.

Once again, I would love to see Q get out of purgatory. But Paige & Aubrey will be back soon and during the 2nd half of the season Geno’s rotation will be all about getting UConn ready for March, so I’m not sure there is sufficient time for Q to redeem herself.

I would expect her to get more than 18 mins, esp when Ice is out, if Geno were happy with her play.
Not in shape yet to play hard and play 30 minutes. She has a high motor and she has some things to figure out still. Considering what we saw earlier this year, I would think Geno is ok with what he saw yesterday.

Was at the game. I think Georgetown played really well defensively. They were physical, but not a lot of grabbing or unnecessary body banging. UConn did a good job or keeping the floor spaced and moving without the ball. Didn't see a lot of standing around. I thought on the whole the team looked pretty good, and I think Georgetown is going to make some noise in conference. They just seem to be offensively challenged relying on Ransom and Hession to score most of their points. They did run some nice offense early with picks and good passing to get open shots, but UConn adjusted and made it more difficult for them after the first quarter.

Was kind of bummed to see the arena staff moving the kids seeking autographs off the floor after the game. Instead they had to wait outside in the cold for the team to come out from the back of the building where their bus was waiting. We were sitting in the parking garage waiting to get out and when the team came out you could hear the kids screaming. Sounded like a concert crowd! Not sure how long they made themselves available for autographs, etc.

Q is not making her shot when it is available, her defense is erratic, she can get 5 fouls called against her in 9 minutes, and she only occasionally is part of a really good play. That is struggling. But she looks like a great potential BB player.

What were they trying to determine? I couldn't turn the volume up. I was watching the game during a meeting.
They were trying to determine if Jana had fouled the Hoya player, in the face. But there was no foul on the play.

Just think, Q won FOW before either KK or Shade. I hope she gets her game together.

2 things:
a. KK had a mud range pull up in the game. Good to see some variety to her shot selection. I love that she hit a 3 third game in a row,
b. I started watching the game when it was 16-10 to Georgetown so I'm not taking credit for the turnaround, but you are welcome :)

I was at the game. It was definitely a pro-UConn crowd - there were even a couple of UConn cheers in the arena. Biggest cheers were for hometown girl, Azzi.

Slow start and not a good Q1, especially on defense. Things improved in the Q2 and after halftime. Azzi and Sarah carried the team, with significant contributions from Ash, KK, Morgan and Jana.

Those of us in the arena had no clue what was taking so long with that review. The refs would look at the monitor, huddle up, look at the monitor some more. It didn't seem like they knew what they wanted to do.

Nice to see Aubrey participating in warmups. Can't wait to see her on the court.
Don't you love that you pay for a ticket to be at the game and they don't show you anything from the replay?

Agree, Q comes closest to being an Aubrey clone (i.e. she can do some things that nobody else can do, in terms of court mobility, and quickness to the ball in rebounding stray shots ) so with Aubrey's return, she will have to wait till next year, and continue to develop those skills towards being a future Aubrey with a better outside shot than Aubrey ,

Oh I don't know, maybe like fouling out in 5 minutes of playing time
Coaches told her to be more aggressive on defense.:rolleyes:

She will now be forever a UConn legend.

We've had years where the end of the bench was a walk on, a project, an out of favor player and even no one-an empty seat. Q can play, it's just tough at UConn where everyone is a top recruit to get playing time.

It only gets harder to find minutes as Ice, Paige and Aubrey return.

No! if you had been there at the beginning, UConn would not have fallen behind at all. :rolleyes:

Two of her fouls were charges, both of which where she recklessly drove into multiple players trying to make a layup.
She's trying way too hard to make an impression on the coaching staff, and as a result is playing with reckless abandon. That's going to keep her on the end of the bench. I feel sorry for her. She can no longer make the 3 pt. shot and she's playing as if she has given up.
