Maybe as a junior or senior but there’s no case for him to be the starting PG next season
Yes, unless he’s hiding some skills we haven’t seen. By this time he should have been able to put the ball on the floor, pull up or go to the hole. But nothing from him. And he’s gotten benefit of doubt from injury and inexperience but he looks healthy.

Nowell is an asset and I don’t believe anyone thinks he should start. He’s a freshman who needs more run like he did tonight. There will be bumps in the road but you can project what Nowell can become and it’s a solid / good PG. People need to temper expectations and understand some players need time to develop. We can’t recruit ‘finished products’ most of the time. Unfortunately, Hurley stuck with Mahaney too long, which stunted Nowell’s growth.

And we need him to give Diarra a rest. We can’t do crap with an injured and exhausted Diarra down the stretch. We also won’t be able to effectively get past midcourt against St John’s, the good SEC schools, Michigan State etc. We just have to find a ballhandler. I don’t understand the resistance to it. It’s game after game of struggling to handle the ball. It has to happen or we are checking out real quick in March. Saying Nowell isn’t the answer is saying there is no answer. There is no other possible solution. Accept it.

Hurley wants to trust him, but doesn’t yet.
Nowell was a top 40 prospect. He needs to play so we can find out if he is legit or not. He seems pretty short. Usually for a short Pg to be good they need to be blazing fast and able to beat their man off the dribble. Nowell looks short, slow, and not a great shooter. I just don’t see what got him rated as a top 40 player. The UConn coaching staff didn’t make him short, and they didn’t make him unable to beat someone off the dribble.
If he was blowing people away off the dribble but having f trouble finishing at the rim I might blame that on coaching and conditioning, but as a top 40 rated freshman he should have come into college being able to drive past players.

Nowell is a freshman and still learning defensively. He is quicker than Mahaney, much stronger, and frankly more competitive. Mahaney is way to small to play in a physical league like the Big East. Frankly, I expected more from a junior who is in his 3rd year of college basketball. Nowell is far from perfect, but he has the physicality to play in the league. He is going to make freshman mistakes but no way am I playing Mahaney over him the rest of the year. If Mahaney played tonight, Georgetown would have attacked him every single time down the floor. He just doesn't have the size and strength to play in this league.
I wasn't really touting Mahaney when I made that comment, just thinking that we need 2 prime ballhandlers for next year, 2 guys who aren't currently on the team. And without McNeeley and Karaban, we'll actually also need a 3/4 who can handle the ball as well.

Nowell has a chance to prove himself but he's definitely going to have competition.

With Diarra, Karaban and McNeeley moving on, we're going to feel much less secure with the ball.

He kind of looks like Geodude flying around out there.

I watched him play in the Jordan Brand Classic last year and I thought he was underrated. He controlled the game and was tough going to the rim.

Like many freshman, he's tentative, which allows defenders to swallow him up.

His injury didn't help.

He was legitimately an All-American in HS. It wasn't hype.

My only real concern about him is his handle. That didn't show much in high school because the defensive intensity was not at this level.

I don't disagree. I don't think Nowell has done anything to suggest he should be given the starting job next year. I am simply stating I have seen enough of Mahaney to know that he borderline unplayable at the moment, so ride with Nowell and see where it goes.

My favorite moment was Tarris at the top of the key, spotting an open lane, turning, and driving to the hoop. I'd like to see that more often.

Shabazz Napier and Boatright were rated similar to Nowell coming out of high school and those guys were good right from the get go. Napier might not have been a great scorer right off the bat, but he was very good at backing up Kemba, so good in fact they often played together with Shabazz running point and Kemba playing off the ball.

I hope Fielder is ok. I have to think he's facing something tough off the court, as I've never seen anyone react to fouling out of a regular season game that way. I'm not making fun of the kid, just hoping he's all right.

I too want Nowell to play for better or worse and see what he can do.

Well, we've had good guards like Marcus Williams who didn't contribute much as freshman. But you can't expect a recruit to give you what Napier gave UConn. If only it were that easy.

Reed needs to start. Please Dan, put your fondness for Samson behind you, all of Uconn Fandom is begging you.
Reed is good, but I think Reed isn’t good at Hurley’s beloved high hedge. Hurley needs to change the defense because they need Reed in there. They should just let Reed guard the rim and rotate the other guys around.

I could see it immediately with Marcus Williams as a freshman. He showed he was a ridiculously good passer and floor general right away.

Did you not see what happened when Nowell was in the game? They attacked him every time. So what’s your point?
Nowell is clearly stronger, Mahaney is still more of an offensive threat, both stagnate the offense at the point. I am no longer advocating for Aiden but Nowell is not the answer. He had two decent assists(both in broken sets) vs probably the least discipline team we will play all year and did nothing else. He was awful defensively.
Awful defensively is an understatement.

I'm glad our team sticks together, and nobody listens to the comedic barstool coaches around here

Nice win Huskies, let's roll, I'm with you, all of you

Didn't Donny say he lost his mom and sister this past summer? Or did I mishear that?
